Basic Geometrical
Shapes
Look around you, can you see
different shapes from different
objects? Everything you see
has its own shape. Look at
the window? What shape do
you see? At your door or your
computer monitor. Shapes are
everywhere. But how these
shapes are formed?
Learning Objectives:
• Know how shapes are formed
• Identify two-dimensional figures
• Identify three-dimensional figures
Geometry is a branch of
mathematics that studies
about points, lines, shapes
and dimensions of things.
We study geometry for us
to develop foundational
skills such as thinking
skills, logic and analysis.
Geometry
Almost everywhere you
find geometry. Look at
your house, carpenters,
engineers and architects
all use geometry to build
awesome houses. Even in
your toys, toy makers use
geometry to manufacture
safe and fun toys that you
can enjoy.
How shapes are
formed?
A point is the most
fundamental object in
geometry and is
represented by a dot. A
dot is a small rounded
mark or spot.
Point
If you put several points
together, you will start to
form a line. Lines are
points that is connected
extending infinitely far in
two directions. Lines can
be straight or curve.
Line
If you combine some
lines, you may form a
shape. It is considered a
shape when a space is
enclosed by an outline.

Shape
Two-dimensional figures
are closed shapes formed
using a straight or a
curve line. It can be
referred to as a plane. A
plane is a flat surface
with no thickness. It can
be measured with length
and width.
2-dimensional
Shape
A square is a 2D shape
with four sides and four
corners.
All sides of a square are
equal in length.
Square
A circle is a 2D shape
with no corner.
Circle
Triangles have three
sides and three corners.
Triangle
Rectangles also have
four sides and four
corners.
But unlike the square,
rectangles have 2 pairs
of equal sides.
Rectangle
Ovals are like circles.
The difference is that
they are
elongated.
Oval
It is a 2D shape with
four sides. Same as the
square,
diamond's side is all
equal, but it has 2 pairs
of equal angles
(corners).
Diamond
Three-dimensional shapes
are formed with combined
lines and planes. It has
thickness and can be
measured with length,
height and width. 3D
shapes have 3 parts: the
faces, edges and corners.
3-dimensional
Shape
Cubes are 3D figures
bounded by six square
faces.
It has 8 corners and 12
edges.
Cube
A 3D figures whose two
end faces are similar,
equal
and parallel. Prisms can
be classified according
to the shape
of their opposite faces.
Prism
A pyramid has a
polygonal base and an
apex. They can be
classified according to
the shape of their base.

Cylinder is a 3D shape
that have 2 opposite
Circular bases and a
curved surface.

Cone is like a
combination of a
pyramid and a
cylinder. It has a
circular base, a

an apex.

a ball. They have a
