Tell Me What You Know
• Make a list of anything and everything
you know about any of these topics! You
    have 5 minutes...GO!

• When we’re done, I am going to take our
answers and create a “wordle” about
    geometry!
Let’s Get Started!!
*Shapes*
✴ Triangles
 ✴ Vertex/Vertices- points of the
triangle. A triangle will always have 3.
✴ Legs or Sides- lines that connect the
vertices. There are always 3 sides to a
   triangle.
✴ Base- bottom of the triangle.
✴ Angles- these help determine which
type of triangle it is: equilateral,
   isosceles, or scalene.
Classifying Triangles
                 I am an equilateral
triangle. All 3 of my sides
are equal. I am also an
               acute triangle because all
my angles are less than 90
                       degrees.
Classifying Triangles

                I am an isosceles
              triangle because two
               of my sides are the
                     same.
Classifying Triangles

                I am a scalene
              triangle because
              none of my sides
               are the same.
Classifying Triangles

          I am a right triangle. I
            have one 90 degree
                  angle.
Classifying Triangles
          I am an obtuse triangle
             because one of my
           angles is greater than
               90 degrees.
Classifying Triangles
             I am an acute triangle
            because all of my angles
                are less than 90
                   degrees.
Squares & Rectangles

I am a square. I Always remember that shapes and
have 4 sides that rectangles are different!!

        are all equal!

      I am a rectangle. I
        have 4 sides but
     have 2 sets of equal
             sides!
Circles
✴ Center- in the center of the circle.
The distance from this point to any
other point on the circle is the same.
✴ Radius- distance from the center to
any other point on the circumference.
Circles
✴ Diameter- distance from one side of
the circle to the other. It has to pass
through the center and it is t wice the
  radius.
✴ Circumference- distance around the
  circle
Have fun with shapes!!

 fun game using shapes!
Shape Reflection
✴ Write a reflection on what you have
just learned about shapes for 3
  minutes.
✴ Turn to your partner and share.
*Polygons*
✴ A polygon is:
✴ a plane shape (2 dimensional) with straight
   sides that MUST connect.
✴ In a simple or regular polygon, none of the sides
   overlap.
✴ In a complex or irregular polygon, the sides
   overlap.
✴ NOTE: a circle is NOT a polygon because it has a
  curved side.
Naming Regular Polygons

                        4 sides
3 sides =
                      Quadrilateral

           Pentagon Hexagon
Naming Regular Polygons

Heptagon Octagon

            9 sides 10 sides

           Nonogon Decagon
Irregular Polygons

                                                 WHY?
If you can answer yes to this question, it is a irregular polygon:

                 Do their lines cross?
Polygons Q&A Session
Ask yourself the following questions if you are having trouble.

✴ Is it on a plane? Or is it 2-dimensional?
(If you look at it, is it flat?)

            YES NO
Polygons Q&A Session
Ask yourself the following questions if you are having trouble.

✴ Do all of the sides connect?
(Are there no holes in the shape?)

         YES NO
Polygons Q&A Session
Ask yourself the following questions if you are having trouble.

✴ Do they have 3 or more sides?

         YES NO
                                 YES
Polygon Fun!
✴Polygon Playground is a
 great place to have fun
 and use what you learned
 about polygons!
Polygon Reflection
✴ Write a reflection on what you have
just learned about polygons for 3
  minutes.
✴ Turn to your partner and share.
*3-Dimensional Objects*
✴3-Dimensional or “3D” objects have 3
  dimensions.
✴3-dimensions mean that they have
  depth.
✴3D objects have a length, width, and
depth. (2D has only a length and width)
*3-Dimensional Objects*
✴A box is an example of a 3D object. It has a
  length, width, and a depth.
Naming 3-Dimensional Objects
✴ Sphere -> perfectly round ball

✴ Cube -> has 6 square sides

✴ Rectangular Prism -> has 6 rectangular
  sides
3-Dimensional Object Match
Draw a line from the word to its matching object

  Sphere

  Cone

   Cube

Square Pyramid
3D Objects: Prisms
✴ Prisms are polyhedrons with 2 congruent and
  parallel faces.
✴ If you take t wo of the same polygons and connect
them so that they are parallel, you will get a
  prism.
3D Objects: Prisms
✴ Prisms are named for the shape of their base.
✴ Use the names of the polygons learned earlier to
  help name the prisms.
✴ ‘ar or ‘ l are added to the end of the polygon name
         a
                   My base is a
                  triangle so my

                 Triangular Prism
                                         My base is a
                                        pentagon so my

                                       Pentagonal Prism

paper and let the students make shape
  creatures!

out of construction paper and glue them
to string or yarn to make necklaces.
✴ Challenge the students to create an
animal or some type of object using just
  the polygon cut outs.
✴ Online games or smartboard games

✴ Students can create the nets for the 3D
objects and then build their own 3D
  objects.
✴ Create a 3D shape town!
