Spina bifida is a neural tube defect where part of the spinal cord or meninges protrude through the spinal column, often causing neurological issues. Common symptoms include a bulging spinal cord, hydrocephalus, paralysis below the waist, and bladder and bowel problems. Lifelong effects may include lower body paralysis, incontinence, and loss of sensation. Surgery is often performed within two days of birth to close the opening and reconstruct the spine and surrounding tissues. Those with spina bifida may require full-time care if parents are unable to provide it.
