Most regular verbs, add –ed to change to past tense:
walk + ed listen + ed need + ed
1. close-closed Rule 1: Final e, add d
live-lived
2. try-tried Rule 2: Final consonant + y, change y to i, + ed
dry-dried
study-studied

3. shop-shopped Rule 3: One-syllable verbs ending in
stop-stopped consonant + vowel + consonant
double the final consonant
4. prefer-preferred Rule 4: Two syllable verbs with final
permit-permitted consonant + vowel + consonant
and the last syllable is stressed,
double final consonant
Remember:
Don’t double letters w, x, or y
Always double letter l (travel-travelled)
