To measure the cross sectional area, we stretched out a tape measure across the river from one side
of the bank to the other. Starting at 0cm, we put a metre ruler into the water, ensuring that it

depth. Then, we measured from the bottom to where the tape was stretched out to find the
depth of the channel. We repeated this every 20cm until we got to the other side. This method

about 2:30 pm for site 2 (Woodlands). It took us about 20 minutes overall for each site. This

the occupied channel width (a key question), wetted perimeter and hydraulic radius of the river so

STUDY POPULATION AND CLINICAL DATA
This study is a retrospective chart review of 360 patients with definite or possible Infective
Endocarditis according to modified Duke Criteria [1 2] who were admitted to Detroit Receiving
Hospital and Harper University Hospital in Detroit from 2006 to 2014. Both hospitals are teaching
hospitals in Detroit, Michigan. For a patient with repeated episodes of Infective Endocarditis, one
episode was only included at our institutions. Clinical, microbiological, and echocardiographic data
of all patients with definite IE were collected using a standard data collection form.
Analysis of Data
Analysis of data was conducted using the SPSS software system version 22. In table 1, bivariate
analysis was used to compare IE patients who died during admission versus those who survived to
hospital discharge.
Continuous variables were expressed as means В± standard deviation (SD) and binary regression
analysis was used to examine the associations between a continuous variable and a categorical
variable with two categories. Categorical variables were presented numbers (percentage) and the
association between them analyzed using The Chi square test. Variables that achieved a P value
less than 0.10 in the bivariable analysis were included in the multivariable logistic regression
model to adjust the effects of any possible confounding variable. The independent predictors of the
mortality were selected using a backward stepwise.

I conducted my interview on a man named Jack Bauwer who was an Afghanistan war veteran
which took place between 2001 and 2014 though he was there from 2001 to 2006. The major
purpose of the war was to counter terrorism in response to 9/11 attacks and it was known as
Operation Enduring Freedom. The combat mission conducted in Afghanistan was to eliminate and
weaken the Al Qaeda militia and their Talibansupporters. I met Mr. Bauwer through a friend while
we had gone for a swimming competition. Mr. Bauwer was Tony s neighbor at Inglewood
California. Tony Michaels, Kim and I were present at the time of the interview.

Mr Bauwer joined the army when he was 25 years old forced by circumstances to abandon his
studies at the university to provide for his family after his father, who was a police officer, was
killed in a shootout in an attempt to apprehend armed robbers who had been terrorizing residents.
Bauwer explained how life became tough for his mother who did not have a decent job especially
in meeting the family expenses and still pay school fees for the siblings. Jack had to sacrifice his
education to ensure his siblings went through school. It happened that at the same time the army
was recruiting new members into the force and that is how he joined the army. He underwent basic
combat training, which was really tough but he had no option but to persevere and face the

diurnal variation in salinity and water level in both the seasons (Figure 8c 8d). Moreover, moderate
winds could have affected salinity and water level above the tidal height either by pushing river
water towards the bay or by introducing shelf water into the bay (e.g. black boxes in Figure 8)
