There are three broad categories of demographic data: population censuses, vital statistics registration, and sample surveys. Population censuses can use the de jure or de facto method. Vital statistics registration collects data secondarily from four sources: vital registration, population registers, other records, and international publications. Sample surveys collect data from a sample of the population rather than the entire population. The population of India based on the 2016 census was 3.124 billion people.

THE FACTO METHOD OF CENSUS
The census commission fixes the one date
for conducting the census throughout the
country.
DE JURE METHOD OF CENSUS
The enumeration period of two or three
weeks is fixed. This is also called REAL or
DIRECT enumeration method of census.

7. In this method, sample is collected from the individuals rather than
entire population. A sample consists of only a fraction of the total
population. Several different population samples are drawn on the
basis of sample surveys.
