 For this task you will be watching 4 clips from
TV Dramas. Use the ones that I have
uploaded for different topics in the other
folders as you have seen them before.

 For each of the slides give an example of how
it was used and what effect it has on the
audience/the message it is trying to portray.
 Dialogue
 Voiceover
 Incidental music
 Ambient sound
 Themes and stings
 Soundtrack
 A diegetic sound of characters talking
 A non-diegetic sound of a commentary or
    ‘voice of god’.
 A non-diegetic sound of music that goes with
    the scene.
 A diegetic sound of background noise in a
    scene.
 Themes: A non-diegetic sound that usually
    accompanies a character or program.
 Stings: A non-diegetic sound that is a short
burst of music. E.g. a jump scare.
 A non-diegetic sound that is the music
associated with the show. E.g. a theme tune.
 What is the function of sound in TV dramas?
 The incidental music is being played over the
top of the dialogue as well as some theme
music with dialogue from certain characters
such as the Master, Martha and the Doctor
and also soundtrack and ambient sound. This
creates the effect of building up the moment
for the audience to the climax when the
    doctor becomes young again.
 In the first part of the scene when in the woods,
a non-diegetic sound is used as incidental music
to create the mood this then stops when
ambient sound of the police and leaves rustling
comes into the scene and then comes back in
again for the title with the soundtrack. Once in
the house, all non-diegetic sound stops and the
scene is only left with ambient sound and
dialogue. This shows that the audience needs to
pay attention at this part as it seems to be a
    crucial part of the narrative.
 In the whole scene there is no non-diegetic
sound whatsoever. There is ambient sound
and dialogue which creates the mood but
instead uses the lack of dialogue to create the
mood. This means the audience has to fill in
the gaps, however blatantly placed they are.
 The scene starts off with a non-diegetic
soundtrack overlaying the top of the ambient
noise., It then fades out to just dialogue and
ambient sound. Some incidental music then
fades in to set the mood which carries on over
the top of ambient sound and dialogue. This
lets the audience know how the character is
feeling and gives an insight into what’s about
    to happen next.
