2. FOLEY SOUND / ARTISTS
Foley sound is when sound heard in everyday life is reproduced in a
film, TV programme or piece of audio text. The reason that sound is
reproduced in this way is due to the fact that original sound filmed
from a camera is not of sufficient quality to be appreciated in a film. For
example, when filming characters walking in snow, the crunching sound
coming from beneath their feet would be almost unheard if it wasn’t for
the reproduction of the noise using Foley Sound. It increases audio
quality in films.
Foley Artists are the people who re-create and reproduce this sound for
filming purposes.
4. DIEGETIC AND NON-DIEGETIC SOUND
In films and TV programmes, we categorise sound into two main
groups, Diegetic and Non-Diegetic sound.
Diegetic sound is the sound within films that the characters in the story
can hear. For example, a car horn would be heard by characters in a
film.
Non-Diegetic sound is sound within films that the characters in the
story can not hear. For example, tense music used to build suspense in
the audience would not be heard by the characters in the actual story.
