Communicative language teaching (CLT) originated from changes to British language teaching in the 1960s that focused on communication. CLT defines the teacher's role as a counselor, group process manager, and needs analyst. Learners are negotiators expected to interact with each other, not just the teacher, by giving and receiving information. To implement CLT, lessons must concentrate on teacher-student interaction, activities, and materials that give learners opportunities to practice communication in the target language, though it can sometimes be difficult and confusing for learners.
