 Somalia (Somali: Soomaaliya; aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Federal Republic of
Somalia and formerly known as the Somali Democratic Republic, is a
country located in the Horn of Africa.
 the easternmost country on mainland Africa is situated on the peninsula
known as the Horn of Africa
 The capital city is Mogadishu is located just north of the Equator on the Indian

 Somalia was an important center for commerce with the rest of the ancient
world,[1][2] and according to most scholars,[3][4] it is among the most probable
locations of the fabled ancient Land of Punt.
 It was known as the land of god for ancient Egyptians, and the land of
unicorn for the ancient Chinese.
 The Republic of Somalia was formed in 1960 by the federation of a former
Italian colony and a British protectorate. Mohamed Siad Barre (Maxamed
Siyaad Barre) held dictatorial rule over the country from October 1969 until
January 1991, when he was overthrown in a bloody civil war waged by clan-
based guerrillas.

part of the ethnogenesis of the Somali people. An ancient historical kingdom where a
great portion of their cultural traditions and ancestry has been said to derive
from.[47][48][49][50] Somalis share many historical and cultural traits with other Cushitic
peoples, especially with Lowland East Cushitic people, specifically the Afar and
the Saho.[51]
• Ethnic Somalis are principally concentrated in Somalia (around 8.8
million),[1] Ethiopia (4.6 million),[2] Somaliland (3.5 million),[3] Kenya (2.8
million),[4] and Djibouti (534,000).[52] Somali diasporas are also found in parts of
the Middle East, North America, Western Europe, African Great Lakes region, Southern
