The document provides details on Lenovo's new distributed storage solution for SAP HANA based on SUSE Enterprise Storage (SES). It discusses the architecture, which includes Lenovo hardware, SUSE Enterprise Storage software, and configuration files. The solution offers various performance levels depending on hardware configuration. Lenovo performs testing and guarantees required SAP HANA performance. The solution provides benefits over traditional storage such as lower TCO, no vendor lock-in, and support from Lenovo and SUSE.
This presentation reviews these steps, scenarios and more:
• What is this database going to be used for – a reporting server or data warehouse, or as an operational database supporting an application?
• Which resources should I spend the budget on to ensure optimal database performance – bigger servers, more CPUs/cores, disks, or more memory?
• What are my backup requirements? If I ever need to restore, how far back do I need to go and what will that mean to the business?
• How will I handle any hot fixes, such as security patches? What downtime can be afforded and what processes need to be in place to apply critical or maintenance updates?
• What are my replication and failover requirements and what should I do for my high availability configuration?

Achieving higher IOPS for NAS at Reasonable CostTyrone Systems
A well-known TV content provider sought a storage solution for their production house; while everyone offered SAN solutions which was beyond their budget, Netweb Technologies’ Tyrone Opslag FS2 NAS solution turned out to fulfill their requirements in a cost effective manner.
Renowned film media company posed a unique challenge to Netweb Technologies for upgrading their NAS environment to higher capacity and to deliver very high IOPS without increasing the costs by much; Netweb provided the solution through SSD Caching.
Learn how upcoming changes in the persistent memory market will affect deployments of in-memory computing and traditional applications. Using software innovations from SanDisk and the broad portfolio of flash storage hardware options, customers and developers can optimize applications for “flash extended memory”, the intersection of in-memory computing and persistent memory technologies.
This presentation provides an introduction to the current activities leading to software architectures and methodologies for new NVM technologies, including the activities of the SNIA Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) Technical Working Group. This session includes a review and discussion of the impacts of the SNIA NVM Programming Model (NPM). We will preview the current work on new technologies, including remote access, high availability, clustering, atomic transactions, error management, and current methodologies for dealing with NVM.

The material was created around 2010-end, but published February'2011.
The main purposes of creating this document were as follows:
- very very few people working on SAP HANA at that time
- information regarding SAP HANA not really available and if available, it was scattered !!
- always pulled for presentations and technical demos which generally hampered my own hands-on work :). And I was alone at San Jose whereas Ulrich used to busy in Walldorf coordinating with SAP.
BTW, it was my full-fledged first SAP HANA presentation in end of 2010, although published in 2011. The document is quite old now but most of the part still holds good as of today.

The flash market started out monolithically. Flash was a single media type (high performance, high endurance SLC flash). Flash systems also had a single purpose of accelerating the response time of high-end databases. But now there are several flash options. Users can choose between high performance flash or highly dense, medium performance flash systems. At the same time, high capacity hard disk drives are making a case to be the archival storage medium of choice. How does an IT professional choose?

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

When to offer?
• Any MSP, hosting company, cloud provider
• Any on-prem cloud environment
• Any scale-out green-field SAP HANA implementation
– Remember: SDS HW can get server discounting…
• Existing SAP HANA customers:
– When significantly expanding their SAP HANA install base
– When they show activities to migrate to SDS
– When they are unhappy with their existing storage vendor, including GPFS
11. 112017 Lenovo Internal. All rights reserved.
With whom should you talk about what?
• C-level / Senior Management
– Discuss general storage strategy within the company (single vendor? FC? What about storage
strategy for hyperconverged systems?)
– Leverage general SDS and Open Source benefits
• IT decision makers
– Leverage benefits of Open Source products
– Talk about no vendor lock-in
– Position SES with storage features (eg snapshot, replication) as cheaper more flexible vs
traditional enterprise storage (see SDS study on references slide)
– Mention that new storage features can/will easily be introduced with SES updates
– Mention that SDS equipment can always be repurposed
• IT staff
– Position SUSE as the leading SDS vendor
– Mention industry standard APIs and protocols
– Talk about easy integration into existing frameworks, but SES also brings its own: openATTIC
12. 122017 Lenovo Internal. All rights reserved.
Customer benefit – why should someone buy it?
• Best TCO (see study in Resource section)
• Clients work with proven XFS – no new file system like GPFS
• Flexible, future proven investment
– No dead-end, roadmap exists, new features being added free-of-charge
– Ready to integrate with other Open Source data lakes (Hbase, Cassandra, etc)
– Migration off of existing SANs, loosen dependency on existing SAN vendor
– No vendor lock-in
• No vendor lock-in
– Clients are getting sensitive to lock-in situations (not yet so much in SDS/HC but the trend
can be seen with other products that are past their hype cycle)
– Yes, we do want to sell Lenovo HW but:
- we want to win clients by being their trusted data center partner
- we want to win by having the best solution, not by having clients locked-in
- we believe in long-term partnerships with clients

Why Ceph as an engineered solution?
• SDS cost savings & flexibility:
– Avoid large markup by storage vendor on hardware
– Share hardware resources between storage and application; increases utilization; get more
work out of less hardware
– More customer flexibility in choosing the best hardware parts for their needs
• SDS disadvantages, when done by yourself:
– Customer is responsible for selecting and installing hardware; may not provision adequately
for the needs of the software
Lenovo Solution Architecture & Support
– Customer is responsible to debug problems and then work with server, storage, OS, or
networking vendor
single point of contact for support
– Storage vendor has to be prepared to support their software running on almost any
reasonable hardware
SUSE and Lenovo have defined a portfolio using few building blocks only

A very brief look at the SAP HANA storage market
• All major HANA HW players use FibreChannel and XFS
– well, except for Lenovo: Lenovo uses IBM GPFS and local storage
• A few additional offerings:
– Cisco promotes MapR but they only use it with NFS export! … so why do MapR at all?
– IBM POWER uses XFS and allows GPFS only when customer takes over architecture
– Several OCFS2 architectures on the TDI list …
• Few proprietary SDS products on the SAP HANA TDI List
– all of them use conventional FibreChannel connectivity (DataCore, Nimble, ..)
– No solution support, ie customer is always responsible for architecture and support
coordination
