Move to Hadoop, Go Faster and Save Millions - Mainframe Legacy ModernizationDataWorks Summit
In spite of recent advances in computing, many core business processes are batch-oriented running on Mainframes. Annual Mainframe costs are counted in 6+ figure Dollars per year, potentially growing with capacity needs. In order to tackle the cost challenge, many organizations have considered or attempted multi-year mainframe migration/re-hosting strategies. Traditional approaches to Mainframe elimination call for large initial investments and carry significant risks – It is hard to match Mainframe performance and reliability. Using Hadoop, Sears/MetaScale developed an innovative alternative that enables batch processing migration to Hadoop, without the risks, time and costs of other methods. This solution has been adopted in multiple businesses with excellent results and associated cost savings, as Mainframes are physically eliminated or downsized: Millions of dollars in savings based on MIP reductions have been seen – A reduction of 200 MIPS can yield $1 million in annual savings. MetaScale eliminated over 900 MIPs and an entire Mainframe system for one fortune 500 client. This presentation illustrates reference architecture and approach successfully used by MetaScale to move mainframe processing to the Hadoop platform without altering user-facing business applications.

Effectively Plan for Your Move to the CloudPrecisely
Many companies using Power Systems running IBM i are looking to more some or all of their workloads to the cloud. Whether the motivation is to optimize their spending or allow for a more flexible consumption model, the cloud can provide unique opportunities to optimize their IBM i environment.
IBM Power Systems Virtual Server is one way to get the benefits of hybrid cloud, maintain the high performance of IBM Power Systems while modernizing at your pace and price point, on and off premises.
As companies move to a cloud environment, they need to consider the challenges of migrating their workload. Migrations always require detailed, coordinated planning and flawless execution. This is especially true today when downtime of any duration is completely unacceptable. So, above all other considerations, maintaining continuous uptime throughout the process is absolutely mandatory.
Watch this on-demand webinar to hear about:
• Benefits of a hybrid cloud approach for IBM i
• Ways the IBM Power VS can add value to your IBM i environment
• How to effectively scope and execute a migration to the cloud.

Reasons to love IBM Java and Websphere Application Server on z systemElena Nanos
If you missed InterConnect 2015 or just could not get to all sessions of interest, see presentation material for session ASZ-2026 that I co-presented with Marcel Mitran (IBM) called " Reasons to Love IBM Java and WebSphere Application Server on z Systems'.
Marcel outlined the latest in innovation and performance with IBM z13 and Java 8 and I presented HCSC WAS on z/OS V8.5.5 x performance data, using Java V6.0.1 & Java V7.1, showing how we achieved up 30% CPU reduction with WASz V8.5.5.1 and Java V6.0.1 and additional 10-12% with WASz V8.5.5.2 and Java V7.1. I also included lessons learned and best practices information.
Java V8 on z/OS goes GA on 3/6/15 and IBM intends to exploit 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java V8 in IBM WebSphere Liberty Profile for z/OS, and full profile of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS. See Software Announcement 215-004 - http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=AN&subtype=CA&htmlfid=897/ENUS215-004
Here are some performance highlights using Java V8 and z13 -
- Java SDK 8 applications running with z13 Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) enabled zIIP specialty engines can achieve throughput improvements of up to 50% compared to Java 7 on zEC12
- Customers running Encryption Facility to share sensitive files with business partners may encrypt their data using clear key in half the time
and reduce the CPU time by one third when using IBM 64-bit SDK for z/OS, Java V8 8 on z13 compared to using Java 7.1 on
zEC12 (source - http://www.infinite-blue.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Vicom-012215.pdf )

A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Today’s challenge – a need for near real-
time analytics
Timely access to relevant information has always been critical
to business success. Thousands and thousands of companies
and institutions use SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse
(SAP NetWeaver BW) as the cornerstone for business
intelligence in their SAP application landscapes. However,
query performance has often been a challenge. The traditional
approach was to build and maintain aggregates and to tune the
queries. In many situations the use of SAP NetWeaver BW is
limited to a relatively low number of power users as well as
predefined reports. Today, more than ever, companies need
instant insights to run their business and spread the use of SAP
NetWeaver BW to many more users. They need a solution
that delivers insight at orbit speed along with universal
scalability. Near real-time analytics have become a “must
have” and IBM and SAP have the ideal solution at hand.
