Improvement of rankine efficinecy of steam power plantsDhilip Pugalenthi
The Rankine cycle is a thermodynamic cycle that generates about 80% of the world's electricity. It uses a heat source to boil water into high-pressure steam, which powers a turbine connected to an electric generator. The reduced-energy steam is then condensed into liquid water and pumped back to repeat the cycle. Improving the Rankine cycle involves increasing the steam temperature and pressure through techniques like superheating, reheating, and raising boiler pressure to boost efficiency. The cycle is limited by materials constraints but remains the dominant method for generating electricity from heat.

A thermal power station is a power plant in which the prime mover is steam driven. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator. After it passes through the turbine, the steam is condensed in a condenser and recycled to where it was heated; this is known as a Rankine cycle. The greatest variation in the design of thermal power stations is due to the different fossil fuel resources generally used to heat the water. Some prefer to use the term energy center because such facilities convert forms of heat energy into electrical energy.[1] Certain thermal power plants also are designed to produce heat energy for industrial purposes of district heating, or desalination of water, in addition to generating electrical power. Globally, fossil fueled thermal power plants produce a large part of man-made CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, and efforts to reduce these are varied and widespread.

The document discusses different thermodynamic cycles used in steam power plants, including Rankine, reheat, and regeneration cycles. It provides diagrams and equations to analyze each cycle. The Rankine cycle involves boiling water to steam, expanding the steam in a turbine, condensing it back to water, and pumping the water to high pressure. Both the reheat and regeneration cycles improve the Rankine cycle efficiency by adding additional heat transfer processes. The reheat cycle reheats steam after the high-pressure turbine, while regeneration uses feedwater heating to preheat water before boiling.
The document describes the key components of a boiler system. It discusses 7 essential boiler mountings: 1) water level indicator, 2) main steam stop valve, 3) pressure gauge, 4) feed check valve, 5) fusible plug, 6) blow down valve, and 7) safety valve. It then provides more detailed descriptions and diagrams of the blow down valve, fusible plug, feed check valve, water level indicator, main steam stop valve, pressure gauge, and safety valve, explaining their purposes and functions within the boiler system.
The document summarizes the failure history and root cause analysis of the superheater tubes in two high pressure boilers. The superheater tubes experienced premature failures due to overheating, with surface temperatures reaching 550-600°C. Analysis found the superheater design had too low pressure drop, inadequate steam velocities, and lack of screen tubes. Modifications reduced tube count, implemented a double stage design with attemperation, upgraded metallurgy, and increased pressure drop. The modifications eliminated overheating failures and improved performance.

This document discusses phosphate hideout in boiler water systems. Phosphate hideout occurs when phosphate disappears from boiler water under high heat or load conditions, then returns without dosing when conditions are reduced. It can cause control difficulties. The document identifies causes of hideout as well as effects like water chemistry upsets and potential under-deposit corrosion. It provides guidelines on maintaining low phosphate levels, avoiding sudden load changes, and controlling dosing to minimize hideout based on recent IAPWS recommendations.
The document compares All Volatile Treatment (AVT) and Oxygenated Treatment (OT) for feedwater treatment in power plants. AVT uses ammonia hydroxide to form a protective magnetite layer, while OT uses controlled oxygen levels to form a more passive hematite layer. OT provides increased corrosion protection in lower temperature regions by blocking pores in the oxide layer and oxidizing iron ions. Implementing OT requires a review of the plant, any necessary modifications, chemical cleaning if needed, training, and revising documentation to transition control strategies.
The document describes the second law of thermodynamics and reversible processes involving perfect gases on temperature-entropy (T-s) diagrams. It discusses:
1) Constant pressure, volume, temperature, and adiabatic processes on T-s diagrams, with constant pressure lines sloping more steeply than constant volume lines.
2) Analyzing a example problem involving a constant pressure expansion of nitrogen gas, calculating work, heat, entropy change, and sketching the process on a T-s diagram.
3) The relationships between pressure, volume, temperature and entropy for perfect gases during various reversible thermodynamic processes.
Surge is a phenomenon seen in gas turbine engines where there is a sudden decrease in the supply pressure to the compressor inlet. This causes air to flow in the reverse direction through the compressor, creating vibrations throughout the engine. Surge can be generated by diffuser vanes retarding the airflow or rotating stall causing breakdowns of the air flow between compressor blades. Repeated surging can damage components like rotor seals, bearings, and the compressor driver through high vibrations and temperature increases. Anti-surge systems aim to prevent surge by maintaining a minimum air flow through the compressor.

It describes the key systems of a diesel power plant, including the air intake system, fuel supply system, exhaust system, cooling system, lubricating system, and starting system. It notes that diesel power plants produce 2-50MW of power and are used as backup power sources. The document discusses the advantages of diesel power plants, such as their simple design, limited water needs, and ability to respond quickly to load changes, as well as the disadvantages, which include high costs and noise.
1) The document discusses key concepts in thermodynamics including the limitations of the first law, heat engines, heat pumps, and parameters of performance like coefficient of performance.
2) It also covers the second law of thermodynamics including Kelvin-Planck and Clausius statements, perpetual motion machines, and the equivalence of the statements.
3) Additionally, it discusses Carnot's principle and cycle, the thermodynamic temperature scale, and an elementary treatment of the third law of thermodynamics.
The document describes the HP bypass system for a steam turbine. The system comprises two HP bypass valves that direct main steam around the HP turbine to the reheater, and two LP bypass valves that direct steam from the reheater around the IP and LP turbines to the condenser. The bypass system is designed to pass 60% of rated steam flow. It is used for starts, transients, load rejection, and to avoid boiler trips by handling excess steam flow. It provides operational and economic benefits like faster starts, reduced thermal stresses, efficient reheating, and house load capability during grid disturbances. The document outlines checks, lineups, controls, protections, and operating conditions for the HP bypass valves.

This document discusses several thermodynamic cycles including the Rankine, Carnot, Otto, Diesel, Eriksson, and Brayton cycles. It provides brief descriptions of each cycle including the key processes involved and common applications. For example, it states that the Rankine cycle is used in coal-fired power plants and involves boiling water to produce steam to drive a turbine. The Carnot cycle represents the ideal reversible thermodynamic cycle and is used in refrigerators.
This calorimeter uses the principle of constant enthalpy during throttling to measure the dryness fraction of steam. Steam at pressure p1 from the main pipe passes through a throttle valve, reducing the pressure to near atmospheric p2. A pressure gauge measures p1, a manometer measures p2, and a thermometer measures the temperature after throttling. This allows determining the dryness fraction, but it is only suitable for steam that is not too wet, as a higher dryness fraction is needed for accurate measurements.
The document defines and provides examples of non-flow processes in thermodynamics, specifically polytropic processes. It states that in a non-flow process, the change in internal energy of a fluid equals the net heat supplied minus the net work done. It then discusses polytropic processes, defining them by the equation pV^n = constant, and providing examples of indices for different types of compression processes. The document provides equations to calculate work, temperature, and pressure changes for a polytropic process on a perfect gas. It includes an example problem calculating these values.
This document describes closed feedwater heaters used in power plants. It discusses:
- Closed feedwater heaters are shell and tube heat exchangers that preheat boiler feedwater using extracted steam, improving cycle efficiency. No separate pumps are needed since streams remain at the same pressure.
- Advantages include reduced irreversibility in steam generation and avoiding thermal shock to boiler metal.
- Most power plants use a combination of open and closed feedwater heaters due to complexity and cost of closed heaters.
This presentation provides an overview of boilers. It defines a boiler as a vessel that heats water to produce hot water or steam. The presentation describes the basic principle of operation where hot gases produced from burning fuel transfer heat to water inside the boiler vessel. It then discusses the main types of boilers, including fire tube and water tube boilers, and describes their key characteristics and differences. Examples are given of commonly used boiler designs like Babcock and Wilcox, pulverized fuel, and fluidized bed boilers. Factors for selecting an appropriate boiler type are also summarized.

Bu işlem genellikle hiçbir ısı transferinin olmadığı kısma
işlemleri için modellenir.
Buhar sıkıştırmalı sistemde, giren net güç kompresör
gücüne eşittir. Genleşme valfi güç giriş ya da çıkışı
içermez.

14
15. Mükemmel bir ısı makinesini tanımlayan ideal bir
termodinamik çevrimdir.
Soğutma sistemlerinde soğutma etkisine ihtiyaç duyarız.
Yani soğutma etkisi yaratmak için zıt sistemleri
çalıştırması gerekir.
Carnot çevrimini tersten de soğutma sistemi olarak
kullanırız.
Tersinir Carnot soğutma çevrimi katsayısı:
Şekil 2.5’de gösterilen şartlarda, -5°C buharlaşma ve
35°C yoğunlaşma (268,15 K ve 308,15 K) Carnot
performans değeri 6,7 olmaktadır.
15

40
42. 1 noktasında soğutucu akışkan buharı kuru-doygun
durumda düşük kademeli kompresöre girer.
Gaz ara kademe basınca pi’ye 2 noktasında sıkıştırılır ve
genellikle ekonomizör olarak adlandırılan flaş soğutucudan
gelen buharlaştırılmış soğutucu akışkan ile karışır.
Ardından karışım 3 noktasında yüksek kademeli
kompresöre girer. Yoğunlaşma basıncı olan pcon’a
sıkıştırılan sıcak gaz 4 noktasında yüksek kademeli
kompresörü terk eder.
Sonra kızgın gazın ısısının geri kazandırıldığı,
yoğunlaştırıldığı kondensere tahliye edilir ve oradan da 5
noktasında sıvı duruma geçer.
Yoğunlaşma sürecinden sonra aşırı soğutulmuş sıvı
soğutucu akışkanı, şamandıralı valf gibi yüksek basınçlı
taraftaki bir kısma aygıtı üzerinden akar.
42

tahliye edilir.
Ara soğutucudaki sıvı seviyesi, ara soğutucudaki ara
kademe basınçta doyma sıcaklığı tarafından kontrol
edilir.
3 noktasında dikey kangal tipi ara soğutucudaki doymuş
buhar yüksek kademeli kompresöre girer.
4 noktasında yüksek kademeli kompresörden tahliye
edilen sıcak gaz, yoğunlaştırılır ve ardından
yoğunlaştırıcıda 5 noktasında aşırı soğutulur.
49
50. 2.10.5 Flaş Soğutucu İle Dikey Kangallı Ara Soğutucu Arasındaki
Karşılaştırma
Düşük kademeli kompresörden tahliye edilen sıcak gaz her zaman,

Ardışık (kaskad) sistemin her devresinde, devrenin sıcaklık
57
58. 2.12.3 Ardışık (Kaskad) Çevrim Performans
Katsayısı (COP)
Ardışık (kaskad) sistemin performans katsayısı
COP, evaporatörde üretilen soğutma etkisinin
sistemdeki bütün kompresörlerdeki toplam iş
girişine oranı olarak tanımlanır. Aşağıda
gösterildiği üzere;

2.12.4 Evaporatör-kondenser
zordur.
