Sodium hydroxide has several important industrial uses including soap making, cleaning, aluminum production, and paper pulping. It is used to saponify fats into soap and glycerol in soap making. As a strong base, it can dissolve oils and greases when added to hot water for cleaning. In aluminum production, sodium hydroxide separates aluminum oxide from bauxite ore via the Bayer process. It is also used in the paper pulping process to remove lignin from wood fibers and control pH during bleaching.
