Sodium hydroxide has many industrial uses including soap making, as a cleaning agent, in aluminum production, and for paper pulping. It is used to saponify fats into soap and glycerol in soap making. As a cleaning agent, it dissolves grease, oils, and proteins when added to hot water. In aluminum production, it separates aluminum oxides from other substances in bauxite ore via the Bayer process. It also aids in the production of cryolite and helps control pH and increase bleaching efficiency in the paper pulping process.
