Indicating to the
practical knowledge
of designing
Name
Pattern Language
Pattern language is a set of vocabulary describing practical
knowledge of designing in a certain domain.
A pattern language consists of patterns that describe what kind of
problem frequently occurs in a certain context, and what is a good
solution for the problem.
124. Activity Pockets **
The life of a public square forms naturally
around its edge. If the edge fails, then the
space never becomes lively.
In more detail: people gravitate naturally
toward the edge of public spaces. They do not
linger out in the open. If the edge does not
provide them with places where it is natural to
linger, the space becomes a place to walk
through, not a place to stop. It is therefore clear
that a public square should be surrounded by
pockets of activity: shops, stands, benches,
displays, rails, courts, gardens, new racks. In
effect, the edge must be scalloped.
Therefore:
Surround public gathering places with
pockets of activity --- small, partly enclosed
areas at the edges, which jut forward into the
open space between the paths, and contain
activities which make it natural for people to
pause and get involved.
Community of
Learning
Two heads or more are likely
better than one.
You’ve realized that what you are starting to work
on is a challenging problem or activity.
▼ In this context
What you want to study is too big and too difficult
to explore alone.
Build a community of learning with people who
share similar interests.

individual creativity & collaboration
People of a Creative Society could create their own goods, tools, concepts,

Creation in this society would no longer be limited to just companies and
organizations but could be performed by each and every individual
according to their own satisfaction.

Co-Creation
1. Creative society has a co-creation system as
a social functional system.
2. The function of the co-creation system
would supply creativity especially in a
collaborative way
3. Code of co-creation system is better/worse
regarding quality.
4. Programs of co-creation system would be

Autopoietic System
element of social system
Communication
The Social Systems Theory considers
society as an system whose element is communication
Only communications are elements of system.
Human, actor, and mind are not element of the system,
but belong to the environment of the social system.
Social system is reproduction networks of
communication
Communication can have no duration. It is momentary operation.
Therefore, communication must be reproduced constantly for the
system to exist.
Autopoietic system
From an operations viewpoint, such a social system is a closed system
as it cannot send or receive communication outside the system.
This kind of system called as autopoietic systems (Maturana and
Varela, 1972; Luhmann, 1984).
“auto” (αυτό) = “self-”
“poiesis” (ποίησις) = “production”
A reduction in overwhelming complexity is necessary for society
to maintain its social order. Luhmann proposed some forms of
differentiation in the history of society:
Modern society is considered as a functional differentiated society
Segmentary differentiation
Center–periphery differentiation and Stratificatory differentiation
Functional differentiation

Modern Society
“What is important is that at some point or other, the recursivity of autopoietic
reproduction began to take hold and achieved closure, after which only politics
counted for politics, only art for art, only aptitude and willingness to learn for
education, only capital and profit for the economy.…” (Luhmann, 2013)

Functional Systems
Economy: Ensuring future supply under the condition of scarcity
Law: Stabilizing normative expectations
Science: Acquiring and generating new knowledge
Politics: Enabling to enforce binding decisions collectively
Art: Providing new ways of observing society by pointing to an imaginary order
Education: Changing people to prepare for communication that takes place in society
Religion: Translating the indeterminacy of the world into a meaningful order
Mass media: Contributing to construction of reality in the society

Structural Coupling between Functional Systems
• Functional systems relate to each other

by way of structural coupling.
• Structural coupling is a way of creating

influence between systems without having common elements.
• Functional systems may influence each other via structure, which
regulates the scope of possibility in communication.
• Each functional system works for its own specific function to realize the
society while loosely influencing one another, but without central control.

Code for Functional System
Each functional system carries out its operations of autopoiesis through a
binary code, two-sided form as a way to describe society, that can be seen
as simply code.
Functional systems structure communication within according to their
own codes.
All communication relates to a code belonging to the system of that code.

Program
Programs express the decision rules to assign each target to a positive
side or a negative side of the binary code.
For example,
In the legal system, the distinctions between what is legal and what is
illegal are carried out based on legal norms such as existing laws and
previous legal decisions.
In science, theories and methods are used as programs to determine the
difference between true or false.
In mass media, which structure their communication code of information/
non-information based on several programs such as, news and in-depth
reporting, advertising, and entertainment.

Code is strictly fixed.
Programs can change over the long term.
This combination of unchangeable and changeable is a secret in
managing the complexity and openness of further possibilities.

124. Activity Pockets **
The life of a public square forms naturally
around its edge. If the edge fails, then the
space never becomes lively.
In more detail: people gravitate naturally
toward the edge of public spaces. They do not
linger out in the open. If the edge does not
provide them with places where it is natural to
linger, the space becomes a place to walk
through, not a place to stop. It is therefore clear
that a public square should be surrounded by
pockets of activity: shops, stands, benches,
displays, rails, courts, gardens, new racks. In
effect, the edge must be scalloped.
Therefore:
Surround public gathering places with
pockets of activity --- small, partly enclosed
areas at the edges, which jut forward into the
open space between the paths, and contain
activities which make it natural for people to
pause and get involved.
139. Farmhouse Kitchen **
The isolated kitchen, separate from the
family and considered as an efficient but
unpleasant factory for food I as hangover
from the days of servants; and the more
recent days when women willingly took
over the servants’ role.
The difficulties which surround the
situation will only disappear, finally, when all
the members of the family are able to accept,
fully, the fact that taking care of themselves
by cooking is as much a part of life as taking
care of themselves by eating.
We are convinced that the solution lies in the
pattern of the old farmhouse kitchen. In the
farmhouse kitchen, kitchen work and family
activity were completely integrated in one big
room. The family activity centered around a big
table in the middle: here they ate, talked, played
cards, and did work of all kinds including some
of the food preparation. The kitchen work was
done communally both on the table, and on
counters round the walls. And there might have
been a comfortable old chair in the corner where
someone could sleep through the activities.
Therefore:
Make the kitchen bigger than usual, big
enough to include the “family room” space,
and place it near the center of the commons,
not so far back in the house as an ordinary
kitchen. Make it large enough to hold a good
big and chairs, some soft and some hard, with
counters and stove and sink around the edge
of the room; and make it a bright and
comfortable room.
159. Light on Two Sides of
Every Room **
When they have a choice, people will
always gravitate to those rooms which have
light on two sides, and leave the rooms
which are lit only from one side unused and
empty.
This pattern, perhaps more than any other
single pattern, determines the success or
failure of a room. The arrangement of
daylight in a room, and the presence of
windows on two sides, is fundamental.
Therefore:
Locate each room so that it has outdoor space
outside it on at least two sides, and then place
windows in these outdoor walls so that natural
light falls into every room from more than one
direction.
A Creative Presentation uses the knowledge and experience of
the audience to inspire the realization of something new. Such a
presentation can encourage the audience to realize and take
action towards the future. However, as a presentation has limited
words, how is such innovation possible? The secrets are scribed
in this book.
Presentation Patterns presents 34 distinct patterns that show
tips, methods, and views for a Creative Presentation. The
Presentation Patterns are written as a pattern language that
summarizes the design knowledge that develops from a person’s
experience into the form of a pattern. It pairs a problem that
occurs in a certain context of a design with its solution and gives
it a name. The users of a pattern language must select a pattern
on the basis of the context in which it is being used, and fit the
abstract solution to their specific situation.
The Presentation Patterns introduced here is a pattern language
to help ensure a Creative Presentation. Along with discovering
methods to give an effective presentation, we hope you can also
imagine the possibilities that pattern languages offer. Read
through the pages and use any or all of the Presentation
Patterns to make your presentation creative.

is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Policy Management at Keio University.
He received a Ph.D. in Media and Governance from Keio University. Dr. Iba is a board
member of The Hillside Group, which promotes pattern languages. Collaborating with
his students, he authored Learning Patterns (2014), Presentation Patterns (2014),
Collaboration Patterns (2014), Words for a Journey (2015), and many other books in
Japanese such as the bestselling Introduction to Complex Systems (1998), Social
Systems Theory (2011), Pattern Language (2013), and Project Design Patterns (2016).
ur society is becoming more complex and diverse day by day. In such a
society, creation and innovation should be no longer limited to just com-
panies and governments, but is entrusted to each and every individual who
collaborate with others. We are approaching the age of “Creative Society,” a
society where people create their own goods, tools, concepts, knowledge,
mechanisms, and ultimately the future with their own hands.
Within a creative society, we believe that pattern languages are key media
for supporting creative acts. A Pattern Language is a collection of informa-
tion called “patterns,” which together works in a language-like structure to
describe practical knowledge related to a certain field of knowledge. The idea
and method of the pattern language was invented in architecture, and then
applied to software design. After that, pattern languages have been applied to
a great variety of fields such as education, presentation, collaboration, busi-
ness, disaster prevention, and public policy.
In this workshop, you will experience how to generate new ideas toward
social innovation by using pattern languages. You will collaborate with other
participants to brainstorm ideas for social innovation through examining
patterns that mention the problems and solutions in the certain social domain.
As one of the social issues to solve, this workshop focuses on improving the
daily life of people with “dementia.” Dementia is a syndrome of deterioration
of memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform daily life activities.
The number of people with dementia is rapidly increasing (over 8 million in
Japan- one in four people over the age of 65; more than 800,000 people in
UK- one in 14 people over 65 years old). Despite this critical social issue,
there have not been enough efforts to create systems, tools, and services that
allow people with dementia to live well in daily life.
In this workshop, we will together generate ideas about new supporting
systems, tools, and services toward a dementia-friendly society. Note that no
prior knowledge is necessary. We will use “Words for a Journey” Pattern
Cards which contain patterns for living well with dementia, so you can learn
about the problems people with dementia face during the workshop.
In addition, we will also use the Project Design Patterns, to turn the ideas
we brainstorm into great projects. Thus, we will be using two types of pattern
languages in this workshop for social innovation.

  • 29. The Social Systems Theory considers society as an system whose element is communication Only communications are elements of system. Human, actor, and mind are not element of the system, but belong to the environment of the social system.
  • 30. Social system is reproduction networks of communication Communication can have no duration. It is momentary operation. Therefore, communication must be reproduced constantly for the system to exist.
  • 31. Autopoietic system From an operations viewpoint, such a social system is a closed system as it cannot send or receive communication outside the system. This kind of system called as autopoietic systems (Maturana and Varela, 1972; Luhmann, 1984). “auto” (αυτό) = “self-” “poiesis” (ποίησις) = “production”

  • 53. 139. Farmhouse Kitchen ** The isolated kitchen, separate from the family and considered as an efficient but unpleasant factory for food I as hangover from the days of servants; and the more recent days when women willingly took over the servants’ role. The difficulties which surround the situation will only disappear, finally, when all the members of the family are able to accept, fully, the fact that taking care of themselves by cooking is as much a part of life as taking care of themselves by eating. We are convinced that the solution lies in the pattern of the old farmhouse kitchen. In the farmhouse kitchen, kitchen work and family activity were completely integrated in one big room. The family activity centered around a big table in the middle: here they ate, talked, played cards, and did work of all kinds including some of the food preparation. The kitchen work was done communally both on the table, and on counters round the walls. And there might have been a comfortable old chair in the corner where someone could sleep through the activities. Therefore: Make the kitchen bigger than usual, big enough to include the “family room” space, and place it near the center of the commons, not so far back in the house as an ordinary kitchen. Make it large enough to hold a good big and chairs, some soft and some hard, with counters and stove and sink around the edge of the room; and make it a bright and comfortable room.
  • 54. 159. Light on Two Sides of Every Room ** When they have a choice, people will always gravitate to those rooms which have light on two sides, and leave the rooms which are lit only from one side unused and empty. This pattern, perhaps more than any other single pattern, determines the success or failure of a room. The arrangement of daylight in a room, and the presence of windows on two sides, is fundamental. Therefore: Locate each room so that it has outdoor space outside it on at least two sides, and then place windows in these outdoor walls so that natural light falls into every room from more than one direction.
  • 55. A Creative Presentation uses the knowledge and experience of the audience to inspire the realization of something new. Such a presentation can encourage the audience to realize and take action towards the future. However, as a presentation has limited words, how is such innovation possible? The secrets are scribed in this book. Presentation Patterns presents 34 distinct patterns that show tips, methods, and views for a Creative Presentation. The Presentation Patterns are written as a pattern language that summarizes the design knowledge that develops from a person’s experience into the form of a pattern. It pairs a problem that occurs in a certain context of a design with its solution and gives it a name. The users of a pattern language must select a pattern on the basis of the context in which it is being used, and fit the abstract solution to their specific situation. The Presentation Patterns introduced here is a pattern language to help ensure a Creative Presentation. Along with discovering methods to give an effective presentation, we hope you can also imagine the possibilities that pattern languages offer. A Pattern Language for Creative Presentations Takashi Iba with Iba Laboratory, Presentation Patterns: A Pattern Language for Creative Presentation, CreativeShift Lab, 2014 34 patterns for designing creative presentations A Creative Presentation uses the knowledge and experience of the audience to inspire the realization of something new. He received a Ph.D. in Media and Governance from Keio University. Dr. Iba is a board member of The Hillside Group, which promotes pattern languages. Collaborating with his students, he authored Learning Patterns (2014), Presentation Patterns (2014), Collaboration Patterns (2014), Words for a Journey (2015), and many other books in Japanese such as the bestselling Introduction to Complex Systems (1998), Social Systems Theory (2011), Pattern Language (2013), and Project Design Patterns (2016). ur society is becoming more complex and diverse day by day. In such a society, creation and innovation should be no longer limited to just com- panies and governments, but is entrusted to each and every individual who collaborate with others. We are approaching the age of “Creative Society,” a society where people create their own goods, tools, concepts, knowledge, mechanisms, and ultimately the future with their own hands. Within a creative society, we believe that pattern languages are key media for supporting creative acts. A Pattern Language is a collection of informa- tion called “patterns,” which together works in a language-like structure to describe practical knowledge related to a certain field of knowledge. The idea and method of the pattern language was invented in architecture, and then applied to software design. After that, pattern languages have been applied to a great variety of fields such as education, presentation, collaboration, busi- ness, disaster prevention, and public policy. In this workshop, you will experience how to generate new ideas toward social innovation by using pattern languages. You will collaborate with other participants to brainstorm ideas for social innovation through examining patterns that mention the problems and solutions in the certain social domain. As one of the social issues to solve, this workshop focuses on improving the daily life of people with “dementia.” Dementia is a syndrome of deterioration of memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform daily life activities. The number of people with dementia is rapidly increasing (over 8 million in Japan- one in four people over the age of 65; more than 800,000 people in UK- one in 14 people over 65 years old). Despite this critical social issue, there have not been enough efforts to create systems, tools, and services that allow people with dementia to live well in daily life. In this workshop, we will together generate ideas about new supporting systems, tools, and services toward a dementia-friendly society. Note that no prior knowledge is necessary. We will use “Words for a Journey” Pattern Cards which contain patterns for living well with dementia, so you can learn about the problems people with dementia face during the workshop. In addition, we will also use the Project Design Patterns, to turn the ideas we brainstorm into great projects. Thus, we will be using two types of pattern languages in this workshop for social innovation. Understanding the idea of pattern language, and how it enhances creativity Utilizing pattern languages to generate ideas Turning your ideas into great projects Facilitating a new kind of idea generation workshops Taking better actions for people with dementia and their families You are putting effort into caregiving. If you do everything for the cared person, including the tasks that they can do on their own, eventually they would become unable to do anything.
