  9. 9. Collabora1ve Genera1on Workshop Generators and par(cipants discuss together to collabora(vely create new ideas/concepts/solu(ons. Coming up with innova(ve ideas through discussion. Par(cipants and generators work within a small group. Workshops: No longer than half-day, around 2-4 hours.
  10. 10. Facilitator? The func(on of a facilitator is to make sure that the process go smooth, support par(cipants, and be neutral. (GoSesdiener, 2003) Workshop generators are also par(cipants. They have the right to speak out and give opinions. Leader? Leads the group through the process and directs the group’s work process. Workshop generators leads the group in order to create a new value in the workshop.
  11. 11. “Generator” The role to lead the group through the inquiry process in order to create a new value. Represents a certain characteris(c/condi(on of a person. Teachers, facilitators, team leaders, parents…etc.
can be a “Generator.” Generators in a workshop: workshop generators. BUT… it is currently highly depended on one’s personality.
  12. 12. Workshop Generator Pa/erns A paSern language for workshop generators to successfully lead the group and create a new value in a workshop. We interviewed experienced workshop generators, generator-like teachers, workshop organizers and used the method of paSern language in order to put the knowledge into words. Captures the essence of the role of workshop generator.
e.g. Way of thinking, ac(ons to take, prevent problems. Helps the reader understand the core value of workshop generator.
  13. 13. Why PaSern Language? Originally stated by an architect, Christopher Alexander. A method to mine the (ps, hints, way of thinking and put them into words. Each essence mined will then be named, which makes it possible to share the knowledge with others. All the paSerns under a theme is related to each other and creates a network-like structure, expressing the wholeness.

  24. 24. Design the behavior “…I kept in mind the A New Perspective pattern and tried to explain to the participants the purpose of the workshop, which was to come up with ideas to create a dormitory where students can enjoy their student life experience as a whole. I think this worked well, for group came up with not only ideas about the functional aspects of the building, but also about activities and interaction between students.” (Reflection from one of the pattern user) A New Perspective
  25. 25. Reflect on the actions “…One of the examples in which I felt like an effective generator, is when the overall atmosphere of our group was very intimate and warm by Putting Yourself Inside. With the help of some snacks, my outgoing and amiable characteristics have helped everyone to create a casual group climate.” Plan the next challenge “…As Future Language aims to inspire students to visualize and articulate their visions for the future, my goal for the next workshop would be A New Perspective. I would like to keep a forward-thinking mindset and help participants to reframe existing ideas and create new ones.” Putting Yourself Inside (Reflections from the pattern users)
  26. 26. Feedbacks “Reading the Workshop Generator Patterns helped me reflect on the first workshop, and think about the things I need to improve on.” “It helped me make action plans for the next workshop.” “…reading and understanding the main points to keep in mind beforehand helped me adjust the way of leading the discussion.” “Due to the abstractness of the solution, I had a hard time grasping it and applying it in the workshop.” “I felt that there are more patterns. For example, “Deepening Question” or “Be the Creator” might be a potential patterns.”
