Socialization
• It is as process to be proficient of a society, it explains ways to
understand
• society norms and expectation to accept society’s belief to be
aware to societal values.
Psychology vs Sociology
• Both disciplines are interested in human behavior.
• Psychologist are focused on how the mind influences that behavior
• sociologists are studied the role of society in shaping behavior.
• Psychologist are interested in people mental development and how their
minds process in their world.
• sociologist focused on how different aspect of society contribute to an
individual’s relationship between their world.
Agent of Socialization
1) Social Group Agent
• Social group often provide the first experience of socialization.
• People first learn to use the tangible objects of material culture.
• In the seconds, as well as being introduced to the beliefs and values of
society, families and later groups communicate expectations and reinforce
norms.
• Family and peers are social group agent.
Family:
• Family is the first agent of socialization mother and father Grandparents’’
• member of an extended families all teaches a child, what he/she needs to
know
Peers:
• A group of people who are similar in age and social status and who share
interest.
• Peer group socialization begins’’ in the earliest year, such as (when kids on
a play ground
• teach general’’ children the norms about rules of a game.
2) Institutional Agent:
The social institution of our culture also informs our socialization.
• Formal institutions like school’s workplace and the government teach
people how to behave in the systems.
• Our institutions like the media contribute to socialization with message
about norms and expectations.
School
• Student are not only in schools to study math, reading, science and other
subjects.
• Schools also serve a function in society by socializing children into behaviors
like teamwork, following a schedule, and using textbooks.
• Schools also socialize children by teaching them about citizenship and
national pride.
Workplace:
• Although socialize in our culture since birth workers required new
socialization into a workplace.
Religion:
• Religion is an important part of socialization for many people like other
institution, these places (mosque, church, temples etc.).
• These places teach participant show to people interact with the religion’s
material culture e.g. prayer rug.
Government:
• Although we don’t think about it many of people go through today are
based on age norms established by government to be define as an “adult”
usually means being 18years old.
• The age at which a person becomes legally responsible for themselves and
sixty-five is the start of “old age" Since most people become eligible for
senior benefit at that point.
Mass Media:
• Mass media refers to the distribution of the impersonal information to a
wide audience,
• such as what happened via television, newspaper, radio and internet with
the average person spending over fours hour a day in front of the tv,
media greatly influences social norms.
• People learn about material culture as well as non-material
culture through media.
