The process which in
society we all become
uniform because of the
norms and values we
learn.
You have 30 seconds to read and memorise the following...

Socialisation begins at birth and continues throughout our life. It
is through socialisation that we learn our norms and values.

We never stop learning how to behave due to the ever changing
nature of the society in which we live and the new situations we
                      may find ourselves in.

There are two main types of socialisation.
             Primary and secondary socialisation.
Now in your own words, write
down a definition for Socialisation

Work in pairs if you need to, get as
much detail down as you can
           remember.

    DON’T MAKE THINGS UP!
You have 30 seconds to check you have included everything in your
                          definition...

PRIMARY SOCIALISATION
Where does primary socialisation happen?

Usually happens in the family. The family is the primary agent of
socialisation.

Why is family the primary agent of socialisation?
During our early years we learn the most basic norms, values, goals
and attitudes of our culture and society from the family.

We acquire human skills – love, sadness, humour, to laugh, to cry, to
smile, to communicate and interact through primary socialisation, in
the family. Close human relationships are important for the primary
socialisation of children.

In your learning groups,
conduct a role play to show
how primary socialisation might
take place in the family.
Away from the family,
where else might we learn
our norms/values/attitudes
and goals?
Homework: Write a script of how social process may take
place in a school.

Example: A pupil refusing to work in class.

Pupil: I do not want to be in this class
