Our Presentation
By Hannah and Lauren.
Genre
Social realism is a genre of film that focuses
on topical issues alive in modern society, which is
represented by different ideologies.
 These themes can include money, drugs,
shootings and sex; these are the most
common themes in modern contemporary social
realism.
 These are very popular today but not all were
involved in the early social realism storylines and
films.
 Rationale for choice - We have decided to do a
social realism trailer we have chosen this genre, as
we believe it relates to our age range, which means
we have a personal connection to it.
 Our audience would be 15-30+ years old as it would
relate to this audience better than others. Our film
will be very relevant to our audience as the story line
should speak to them.
Initial Idea
 Our initial idea is there is going to be a party, that
everyone wants to go to, everyone gets drunk, gets
high and everyone is having a good time until the
main character is hit by a car that one of his is
mates was driving drunk and high, when he goes for
a walk to talk to his pregnant girlfriend. He gets
pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and
his mate is sentenced to 15 years imprisionment.
Through out the film shows the life without the two
male characters as their girlfriends live
without them.
Codes and Conventions to follow.
Location- In a real life location rather than a
Hollywood studio. We have chosen to film in
Woodford Halse, as there are a few woods
where we wish to film.
Stock Characters
 We will use the stereotype for the age group
we are targeting at; being 15-30 years old.
This will be shown through the costume of
the characters. It will be a group of teenagers
around 15-19 years old.
 The stereotype is tracksuits, trainers,
smoking and drinking, so we will follow this
stereotype to fit in with our genre.
Stock Character
and Costume
Tracksuit
bottoms – used
to show the way
we stereotype
male and
female
teenagers.
Hooded tops-
again to show
the
stereotypes
given to
teenagers.
Vicky Pollard – From
Little Britain to mock the
way we stereotype
teenagers in this
generation.
Whitney
Dean -

Actors
 Social realism films use non-professional
actors or unknown actors as it adds to the realistic
look.
 They also use this because they would be a small
independent company, which means they
wouldn’t have the money or budget to be able to
have big well-known Hollywood actors.
Oliva Colman shown in the top right hand
corner is a well known independent actor.
Shots
 Wide shots: They use these to get a good
understanding of what is going on or even
where the setting is.
 Close ups: To help the audience understand
the characters emotions to familiarise and
follow them in their journey.
 Birdseye view: To capture the whole image.
Shots
 Establishing shot: Predominately set in
‘gritty’ council estates, urban cities.
 Panning shots: Are used to follow again the
protagonist’s journey.
 Mid-shots: These are used to connect the
audience to the characters- the viewers are
only shown part of the object but feel as if
they are looking at the whole subject.
Props
 Alcohol cans and bottles
 Tents
 Lights
 Cars
 Knives
Scripts, Themes, Humour and
Seriousness
 Semi improvised scripts – These are used
to create a realistic dialogue to achieve the
genre.
 Humor and seriousness – Social realism
show the everyday issues that people go
through every day this shows the
seriousness and they try to incorporate
humor in the film.
 Themes – Alcohol, Sex and Drugs.
Sound
 Urban music usually such as ‘RnB’ and ‘hip hop’ is
used to go with the Mise-en-scene of the ‘gritty’
council estates creates a sense of fear to the
audience and relate well to gang culture, which is
typical theme used in many British Social Realism
films.
 Dialogue: is also used in this genre with a very
‘chatty’ tone. To add, swearing is a genetic
convention of this genre and is used widely in many
films.
 But we will make our own ‘hip-hop’ ‘rap’ beat that we
can use.

Social realism pitch presentation lauren and hannah

  • 2. Genre Social realism is a genre of film that focuses on topical issues alive in modern society, which is represented by different ideologies.  These themes can include money, drugs, shootings and sex; these are the most common themes in modern contemporary social realism.  These are very popular today but not all were involved in the early social realism storylines and films.
  • 3.  Rationale for choice - We have decided to do a social realism trailer we have chosen this genre, as we believe it relates to our age range, which means we have a personal connection to it.  Our audience would be 15-30+ years old as it would relate to this audience better than others. Our film will be very relevant to our audience as the story line should speak to them.
  • 4. Initial Idea  Our initial idea is there is going to be a party, that everyone wants to go to, everyone gets drunk, gets high and everyone is having a good time until the main character is hit by a car that one of his is mates was driving drunk and high, when he goes for a walk to talk to his pregnant girlfriend. He gets pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and his mate is sentenced to 15 years imprisionment. Through out the film shows the life without the two male characters as their girlfriends live without them.
  • 5. Codes and Conventions to follow. Location- In a real life location rather than a Hollywood studio. We have chosen to film in Woodford Halse, as there are a few woods where we wish to film.
  • 6. Stock Characters  We will use the stereotype for the age group we are targeting at; being 15-30 years old. This will be shown through the costume of the characters. It will be a group of teenagers around 15-19 years old.  The stereotype is tracksuits, trainers, smoking and drinking, so we will follow this stereotype to fit in with our genre.
  • 7. Stock Character and Costume Tracksuit bottoms – used to show the way we stereotype male and female teenagers. Hooded tops- again to show the stereotypes given to teenagers. Vicky Pollard – From Little Britain to mock the way we stereotype teenagers in this generation. Whitney Dean - Shows a realistic characterizat ion of a teenage chav. This image shows a ‘gang’ of teenagers showing there authority.
  • 8. Actors  Social realism films use non-professional actors or unknown actors as it adds to the realistic look.  They also use this because they would be a small independent company, which means they wouldn’t have the money or budget to be able to have big well-known Hollywood actors. Oliva Colman shown in the top right hand corner is a well known independent actor.
  • 9. Shots  Wide shots: They use these to get a good  understanding of what is going on or even  where the setting is.   Close ups: To help the audience understand  the characters emotions to familiarise and  follow them in their journey.   Birdseye view: To capture the whole image.
  • 10. Shots  Establishing shot: Predominately set in  ‘gritty’ council estates, urban cities.    Panning shots: Are used to follow again the  protagonist’s journey.  Mid-shots: These are used to connect the  audience to the characters- the viewers are  only shown part of the object but feel as if  they are looking at the whole subject.
  • 12. Scripts, Themes, Humour and Seriousness  Semi improvised scripts – These are used  to create a realistic dialogue to achieve the  genre.  Humor and seriousness – Social realism  show the everyday issues that people go  through every day this shows the  seriousness and they try to incorporate  humor in the film.  Themes – Alcohol, Sex and Drugs.
  • 13.
