- Guidelines or Policy or Both?
- Crafting your Policy and Guidelines
- NLRB Insights
- Implementation Plan
- Employee Social Media Examples
- Future Issues
- Your Next Steps
22% of employees visit social networking sites 5 or more times per week, yet only 54% of employers have a policy dealing with social media inside and outside the workplace. During this presentation, participants will learn about potential legal issues involved in adopting a policy and how to avoid those issues. Sample provisions will be discussed and recommended actions addressed.

Academics tell us that Marketing is in decline. At the same time, Social Media are having an enormous influence on not just Marketing but on the organisation itself. This academic document, a précis of a dissertation, explores the parlous state of Marketing and asks if Social Media can assist in revitalising Marketing. 8 managers in 7 top brands are interviewed in an attempt to explore the powerful conceptual framework developed. The conclusion finds some common ground between academia and practitioners but establishes a clear difference of view on the degree of Social Media’s impact on Marketing, Strategy and the Organisation.
Abstract
Over the last decade, the way people communicate with each other has been changing astonishingly. The
extensive new plethora of media has given to customers more options to gather and provide information
about products and services. This study attempted to identify and measure the degree to which Social
Networking Sites influence people's professional lives, their social skills and work productivity and
ultimately boost effectiveness. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used for this research.
The results reveal that Social Networking Sites play an essential role in employees‟ relations with
customers, that Instant Messaging (IM) services offered by Social Networking Sites can be a crucial
element for organizations in disseminating information, enabling knowledge sharing, increasing
productivity and promoting teamwork. It seems that customer engagement and Customer Relationship
Management (CRM) are vital tools for organizational effectiveness, not only to maintain loyal clients but
also to survive and keep maintaining profitability.

LF Energy Webinar: Electrical Grid Modelling and Simulation Through PowSyBl -...DanBrown980551
Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Social media-in-the-workplace
1.
2. To do market research by engaging with ‘social media intelligence’ (Wilson, 2009). A micro-blogging site like Twitter can actually be a source of relevant and useful insights which may be used by the company to “listen to conversations,” know the trends, and even to find out the weaknesses of their competitors through the claims of the netizens. By knowing how customers online feel and think about the brand, the company may pick up actionable insights and use them as bases for improvement, and for engaging customers into conversations about their brand (Wilson, 2009).
3. To get instantaneous feedback from peers (Galagan, 2010). Social tools can enable a company to get and give instantaneous feedback from their peers. Gone are the days when each of the staff needs to wait for the end of the year to find out any feedback from each other. Galagan (2010) added that this instantaneous feedback may be anonymous but conversational in nature, so the staff would not really mind getting and giving feedback.
6. Source: More using social media at work (2010). Information Management
7. To enhance internal communication (“Social media,” 2009, “Yammering away,” 2010). Social media may also “break down internal barriers in the corporate world” (“Yammering away,” 2010). For instance, an Amazon-owned online retailer, Zappos, does encourage its employees to utilize Twitter to share information. The use of social media in the company shall acquaint all employees of each other, especially in large companies, where most employees don’t get an opportunity to mingle with those from other departments. Also, the use of Twitter or any other social media platform may enhance the company’s image outside the workplace. The customers would have a reason to believe that even the staff with key positions, are humans, too, when they follow what these people have to say.
