incarceration. The original theory of restorative justice was based on simple human behavior
regulated by incentive instead of punishment, which instituted the concept of parole as a means of
reward for a prisoner for rehabilitation. Further studies in criminology proved that this idea was too
simplistic and married it to the positivist theory of criminology and instituted individual assessment
and treatment for each prisoner based on their specific needs for reformation.
As Rothman (1980) and many others have pointed out, this ideal system was never implemented as
intended. Although the contours of the correctional system changed the juvenile court,
indeterminate sentencing, probation, parole, and discretion became integral features of this system
the resources and knowledge needed to provide effective treatment to offenders were in short

conclusions, their strengths, weaknesses, inconsistencies, and the trends that follow the studies of

Removing the weight of the revolution and focusing solely on Marjane s coming of age story,
there were many scenes in the graphic novel to which her character greatly appealed to me, and a
few where I even found myself relating to her. She refused to adhere to the school customs and
asserted her independence through small acts of rebellion; owning audiotapes and wearing western
rock apparel, donning jewelry in school despite warnings. While not as extreme, it reminds of how
of I tend to defy certain norms in my own household. My parents, being rather conservative
Christians, hold some views that are rather narrow minded. Although they tend to authorize me to
hold the views that they do, I instead expand my perspective towards less conventional ideals, and I
have a different mindset than they do regarding many things. I also appreciated the way Marjane
handled restrictions at school; instead of bearing the humility of situations
