The Theme Of Herman Melville sBartleby, The Scrivener
Herman Melville s short story Bartleby, the Scrivener reveals different themes such as isolation and
human morality test. In the story, the narrator runs a law firm and has a new Scrivener [Bartleby] who
the narrator describes as the strangest I ever saw or heard of (661). For the first few days, Bartleby is
seen to be working fine, however, one day Bartleby just responds with I would prefer not to when
anyone assigns a task to Bartleby (674). The real problems start to arise when Bartleby sleeps and eats
at the office while denying to work or leave. The narrator illustrates the two main themes of human
morals and isolation throughout the story with the use of biblical references to Bartleby as a leper and
shows symbolism of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lawyer is not able to focus on anything because Bartleby will not move from the office or do any
work. The lawyer then decides to pay Bartleby a twenty dollar bill over and above whatever [is in
Bartleby s account] and tell him his services are not necessary (674).The lawyer throws money at
Bartleby instead of handing it to him in his hands. The lawyer is trying to get rid of Bartleby to let the
law firm make money. Melville portrays a constant war of conscience in the lawyer s mind regarding
Bartleby s actions and the lawyer s reactions. The lawyer goes to church regularly yet does not show
the Christian beliefs and ethics. As the story progresses, the lawyer decides to leave the current office
and shift to another office in hopes that Bartleby will not follow the company. Bartleby remains at the
office and does not move however the new employees find Bartleby s old employer. The new
employees ask whether the lawyer knows Bartleby. The lawyer responds by I certainly cannot inform
you. I know nothing about him (682). The fact that the lawyer straight up denies knowing anyone
named Bartleby is a biblical reference to Christ being denied by Peter (Zlogar 525). The lawyer denies
knowing Bartleby to avoid any issues that could affect the law firm. On the other hand, Peter denies
knowing Christ to avoid any punishments from Christ. Zlogar implicates that Bartleby initially comes
to the narrator as the leper comes to Christ (Zlogar 511). The

Pericles Funeral Oration Speech Summary
Pericles (495 429 BCE) whose name means Surrounded by glory was a young influential Greek
aristocrat who was more than just a ruler of Athens: He was a politician, a prominent statesman (with
influences in Art), a General (in Greek Strategoi ) with significant leadership capabilities and an
influential figure that played a crucial role in inspiring not only the people of Athens through all his
endeavors but generations to come with his inspiring funeral oration speech for the dead Athenians
who fought in battle. His speech, which was told by Thucydides who referred to Pericles as the first
citizen of Athens , honored the dead, rallied the troops, glorified Athenians, and gave voice to Athens
democratic value. Pericles oration speech would later become famous and contribute to the meaning
behind Democracy.
Pericles family s prestige, wealth, and nobility allowed him to follow his preferences toward
education, philosophy and art while in his youth. Pericles promoted the arts, literature, and philosophy.
He saw the importance and value in education, philosophy and the arts and could see how they would
eventually help Athens blossom as a center of education, art, culture, and democracy. Pericles is

The Role Of Engineers In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein
Engineers hold a valuable place in our society. They lay the groundwork for and create artifacts based
on the foundation of knowledge that science grants. In our culture, however, it is not uncommon for
people to be confused about the role that engineers play. Often times, engineers are portrayed as being
skilled and knowledgeable, but lack a sense of moral responsibility for their creations. This mentality
is shown in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, in which, the inventor, Victor Frankenstein attempts to defy
the natural laws of life and death without first considering the consequences. This phenomenon is not
just present in works of fiction. The man who designed the atom bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, said
to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission,

Catcher In The Rye Isolation Quotes
By the end of the novel, Holden learns to accept society for what it is and accept the fact that kids do
not necessarily need his protection from society or any of its prejudices, judgements, or expectations.
This does not mean that he cannot help them, as he can stay there and be waiting for them to at least
reduce the pain undergone due to the aforementioned societal aspects whenever they need his help.
After a single day and a deep, meaningful, and serious talk with Mr. Antolini, Holden adapts to fit this
role ideally. When he is about to leave for Mr. Antolini s house, Holden [takes] [his] hunting hat out of
[his] coat pocket and [gives] it to [Phoebe]. She likes those kind of crazy hats. She [does not] want to
take it, but [he] [makes] her. (Salinger, 198 199). Here, Holden gives the hat to Phoebe in hopes that it
will protect her from whatever societal harshness or hardships she undergoes while he is at Mr.
Antolini s house. This hunting hat jointly symbolizes protection and isolation. It is a way of isolating
oneself from all of the phony people because as Holden himself admits on multiple occasions, it is
ugly and displeasing to the eye. This could potentially be a way by which he tries to deter himself
from all of the phoniness in the world. One type of phonies are those who take everything at face
value, and by wearing this hat, Holden deters at least them. That could even be the reason why he likes
this hat so much: the fact that it makes him come into contact

How Did Charles I Rise To Power
As head of the government of Spain he believed in the divine right of monarchs and used this to order
murders. Philip developed a system of self government with viceroys answering to him. He came to
power when his father retired in 1556 and he was next in line. He was the most powerful monarch. He
helped the Catholic Church persecute Protestants during the Counter Reformation. Philip was ruler
during the time of the economic decline of Spain. He saw his nation fall into bankruptcy and its
terrible decade from 1588 to 1598. This included the disaster of the Spanish Armada. During his rule
the Spanish attained there greatest power, extent, and influence.

Joseph Stalin and USSR Essay
Joseph Stalin and USSR Under the leadership of Josef Stalin, U.R.S.S. has become fast an
industrialized state, and having won the Second World War, a super power. In the same time, though,
Stalin s tyranny has brought the ruin of the Russian society. Even before the death of the Soviet ruler
Lenin, the leaders of the Communist Party have begun the fight for succession. Controlling the party
meant in fact holding control of the whole country  the first socialist country, giant but extremely
uninvolved. The  20 witnessed some big fights for power. In 1923 Stalin, the General Secretary of
the Party, allies with Zinoviev and Kamenev in order to defeat the plans of a brilliant and apparent ...

He learnt a fluent Russian at one of the Sunday Schools organized by the church, afterwards being

writings and ideas which was the reason why he was expelled in 1899. He entered in the circle of the
revolutionaries and spent the next years supporting the cause of the revolution, being often thrown in
prison or forced to live in intern exile. In 1912, he enrolls in the Bolshevik Party (later known as
Communist), becoming member of the Central Committee. The role played in the Revolution in
October 1917 was insignificant (which was hushed up later), but afterwards he proved himself skilful
in solving the problems which popped during the Civil War. He was named first Minister of the
Nationalities, and in 1922 became the General Secretary of the Communist Party. This desk work,
apparently boring, was for Stalin the road to power, giving him the opportunity to control the party s
committees and so to promote his own sustainers. So the  20 were for Stalin full of important
successes against his rivals. These were, obviously, politic disputes and not real fights: although the
communists treated their opponents with harshness, there was an unwritten rule which said that blood

Self Identity By Anthony Giddens
Project of the self is one of the most significant concepts created by Anthony Giddens. The author
bases his ideas of self identification upon influence of the modern world and changes created by the
process of globalization (Giddens, 1991). The main argument is strong. However the study seeks some
further explanations of the role of identity in the social life of individuals.
This essay will investigate issue of self identity in the modern world according to Antony Giddens s
ideas. Firstly, it will be considered how the concept of self identity is created in the modern world.
After that identities will be explained in terms of Giddens s opinion. It will be given an overview of
the main Giddens s work on self identity (Giddens, 1991). Then Giddens s Project of the self will be
scrutinised. After that Giddens s approach to self identification will be critically analysed. There will
be outlined strength and weaknesses of the Giddens s study on self identity. The essay will be finished
by evaluation of Giddens s Project of the self .
The world has become modern and global. Identification of the self is a complicated, though, an
important problem of every individual. Self identity is based on inner values and reflections on
culture, politics and social interactions. The main point is that people label themselves to any
particular group in the society (Worchel etc., 1998). According to Ferguson: Identity commonly refers
to which it makes, or is thought to make

Cyber Crimes Over Recent Years And The Social Affects
Literature Review Study
During this literature review, I will be explaining the increase in cyber crimes over recent years and
the social affects this has in current society. Furthermore, this literature review will also focus on the
topic of digital forensics and the problems that investigators have against the ever growing number of
cyber crimes. However, the main part of this literature review is to discuss the topic of Steganography
and how this is used in the world of cyber crime for malicious intent. This will lead to the analyses of
process it takes to use steganography and to critically evaluate the methods that are already in use for
hiding information using steganography and also to detect if Steganography has been used on an

Cyber Crime:
Throughout the years, the internet has become a place that has interconnected this world as people
now have the freedom to use computers from their own homes, making such this as; communicating,

users. However, the internet isn t always used for good. It also allows the possibility of crimes such as
identify theft, credit card fraud etc.

activity involving computers and networks. [2] an example of this would be if a person used multiple

Perception Of The Truth In The Necklace By Guy De Maupassant
Perception of the Truth
What would you do if you lost something of great value that did not belong to you? In the short story
The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, Madam Loisel says No... there s nothing more humiliating as
looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women. In this passage Madam Loisel was worried about
how people would perceive her at the party. I the story was about a couple who was not very wealthy
unlike most of their friends. The wife got invited to a very fancy affair and refused to go unless she
had a fancy dress to wear. After receiving all the money her husband had saved up he still complained
about not looking up to par with the rest of the guests. She then wanted a nice piece of jewelry. She
borrows a diamond necklace from one of her friends. She enjoys herself at the affair, but on the way
home loses the necklace. The couple then borrows money from everyone they knew to purchase a
replacement for thirty six thousand francs. After returning the replaced necklace she then had to work
the next ten years to pay off all the money they had borrowed. She then found out the necklace that
was lost was only an imitation. The long term hardships of the main characters are based upon the
false perception of the truth. Madam Loisel felt that if she didn t go to the affair looking rich then they
would see her different, such as poor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Job Plan For A Career Plan
A career is defined by a sequence of positions, opportunities and windows that open and close says
Alain Gosselin, Professor and Associate Director of Executive Education and leaders at HEC
Montreal. This is why it may be useful to have a plan and update it if necessary. Often absorbed in
their everyday life, students have trouble taking time to breathe and plan their week, not to talk about
building a career plan. However, it is necessary to not wait until you are limited to think about it. Even
though it was not appreciated in the past, the issue of labor mobility has now become an asset for
executives. Today, someone who has acquired multiple experiences in several industries will be
valued for his skills. Similarly, someone who has lived in many countries will be the resource person
to support the implementation of a local agency. Contrary to what some may think, having a career
plan does not betray an inordinate ambition. In some cases, it is even the trigger to find a better
balance between family life and professional life. In this sense, a career plan has become necessary
refocus on strategic choices. For a long time, I have been passionate about new technologies. Before
beginning my bachelor, I was already interested in network systems. I even completed a Cisco system
administrator certificate and taught the subject for one year. Additionally, since my childhood, I have
always thought about creating my own company and I have a tantrum for helping people. Above

Customer Service and Voluntears Program by the Disney Company
Introduction Walt Disney has set themselves a goal in their own words it states, Disney s mission is to
always deliver, with integrity, the most exceptional entertainment experiences for people of all ages.
We hold our citizenship efforts to the same high standard. Ultimately, our goal is to be the most
admired company in the world. We believe we can achieve this goal by conducting our business and
creating our products in an ethical manner, and by promoting the happiness and well being of kids and
families by inspiring them to join us in creating a brighter tomorrow. This is of vital importance when
referring to Disney and CSR the reason being a benchmark is required in order to assess the success of
any campaign that gets run by Disney. It is easy to see that Disney has set themselves extremely high
targets wanting their CSR projects to be of the same standard as their day to day business and want to
be the best company in the world for CSR. Currently Disney is ranked number 1 in the world for CSR
by Forbes in a four way tie along with Microsoft, BMW and Google. This means that they have
already met one of their goals and even exceeded it by being rated more highly in terms of CSR rather
than their actual business as their current rating on business success is 108th in the world. Even
though part of their goal is already met doesn t mean they can t still aspire to achieve the same
standards and in many ways it shows how invested Disney is donating more than ICBC

Essay On SLIDE 8
SLIDE 8: At the relationship level we will address social support of parents. This is important because
there is often a lack of comfort for adolescent females in talking to their parents regarding
contraception and the decision to use it. Many teenage girls fear talking to their parents about sex, A
2015 survey by the national campaign to prevent teen and unplanned pregnancy found that 68% of
teens don t use birth control or protection because they are scared their parents would find out. We
will use the theory of reasoned action to affect change here. While the theory of reasoned action is an
individual theory it has a social aspect to it in the form of perceived subjective norms. It is especially
relevant when discussing an adolescent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is important because adolescents spend a lot of their time in peer groups and are often influenced
by observing the behaviors of their peers and the reaction to that behavior. Also of importance
research shows that those who believe their peers are using condoms are more than twice as likely to
use them themselves. The relevant mechanism of change here is social cognitive theory. It has a
specific focus on the individual and their relationship with the environment and will address the way
peer influence can effectively impact dual contraception use among minority females. Social cognitive
theory can address increasing positive peer influence through interventions that Provide mentorship to

vicarious learning through safe sex practices of mentors and/or the consequences mentors faced due to
unprotected sex it would influence behavioral capability by increasing knowledge regarding what is
considered safe sex, why dual contraception is safer than one contraceptive alone and skill in condom
and birth control use; self efficacy would be addressed to impact sexual health and safety, self control
when faced with a situation where their desire to use dual contraception is questioned and how to

Medium Ground Finches
Medium ground finches are one of the 13 species of finches. These finches, the medium ground
finches have large beaks. You can find these finches at Daphne Major, in the center of Galapagos
island. Daphne Major is also located near South America in the South Pacific ocean.
Medium ground finches had small beaks before but changed over time. This was caused because of
evolution and survival of the fittest. When Charles Darwin came onto the island he wondered why
there were many different species of the finches, then he hypothesized that a group of finches might
have came in from South America. Then splitting of the finches and adapting into their environment to

Personal Eulogy For An Rollercoaster Life Of Levi Simpson
So looks like you are here for the amazing rollercoaster life of Levi Simpson..... All the ups and
downs. Let s get started from the beginning where this blessing of life was created. On February 16,
2001 in Fairmont Mayo Clinic hospital. Sorry that s the only information I can remember of this
depressing start and just to let you know it only got worse later on. What I mean by that is by the age 2
my parents got divorced and the full struggle started there... going through life wondering why your
own dad doesn t want you takes a toll on you. Of course life might hit you with some struggles but it s
supposed to get better right? Well for me of course not, my mom eventually found her new husband
and I was happy for her but still it added a lot of confusion on a young mind like mine. After a few
years go by and my mom is still seeing her soon to be husband Mike the huge decision was made. We
packed our bags and moved to 203 Queens Court in North Mankato where I started preschool on up.
About first grade is when I finally actually start to get down about the whole situation with my parents
split because I just remember walking into those parent conferences just hoping that maybe he might
show up because we are still his kids, well I thought wrong and the worst part was I would sit there
through the whole time looking at the door just wishing that he would just walk in and just try to be
the father I wanted him to be. Just to let you know he never showed not even once. Oh and to

Criminal Justice Assembly Line
What Is the Criminal Justice Assembly Line?
The criminal justice assembly line was a term coined by justice expert Herbert Backer referring to the
system acting as a funnel or conveyor belt down which moves an endless stream of cases, never
stopping . . . most people who commit a crime escape detection, and of those who do not, relatively
few are bound over for trial, convicted, and eventually sentenced to prison (). The funnel is wide at the
top, and narrow at the bottom. View the entire process as a never ending series of 15 steps or decision
points:
1. Initial Contact this step involves a police interaction such as, responding to complaints and calls or
observing a suspect committing a crime.
2. Investigation sufficient evidence, known as probable cause, must be gathered to identify and
support a legal arrest of a suspect.
3. Arrest The officer is not required to use the word arrest to initiate an arrest. For an arrest to be
considered legal, the following conditions need to exist. First, the officer has to have probable cause,
the legal requirement for an arrest. Second, the officer has to deprive the individual of freedom, and
lastly, the suspect believes that he or she is now in custody and has lost his or her liberty.
4. Custody After an arrest, while detaining the suspect, the police may want to search for evidence,
conduct an interrogation, or encourage a confession.
5. Charge the next step is to charge the suspect. If sufficient evidence

The International Association of Chiefs of Police Research Center Board of executives, Smaller Law

focus is to make available official support to newer law enforcement leaders in the first three years of

geographically and demographically, police departments face additional challenges determining
efficient and effective ways to make use of officers and resources (Roberts, 2000). Administrative

Information And Communication Technologies And The Present...
Abstract:
This paper examines information and communication technologies and the present media background.
The characterizations of media culture are then explored from the insight of new generation, and the
relations between them and ICT are investigated. The dominant educational logic with regard to ICT
is outlined, and different forms of the digital divide are presented. Some global aspects of ICT use
among new generation are reviewed, using both primary and secondary sources. New forms of
modern generation socialization brought about by the coming out of ICT are examined, and the
concluded with a set of recommendations.

Regardless of the vast multiplicity in living environments, an exceptional and unifying global media
culture has developed that challenges and often places of interest such traditional forms of
socialization as family and school.
This versatile cultural circumstances in which new generation are under pressure to find route in their
lives or simply to survive, to improve their living conditions, and to develop their identities has been
given various names. Some call it the information or informational age, while others prefer the term
techno traditions or techno entrepreneurship, global media culture, or simply globalization, referring
to the dialectic procedure in which the global and the local exist as combined and mutually
implicating principles .(1) Labels such as post industrial, virtual and cyber society are also in use.(2)
The idea behind all these terms is that across the globe, ICT are playing a central role in young people
s lives and in society at large.
Two major assumptions underlie the role of ICT: the first is that the propagation of these technologies
is causing rapid transformations in all areas of life; the second is that ICT function to unify and
standardize culture. It is on the basis of these assumptions that the term media culture , incorporating
the phenomena of informationalism (3) and globalization,
This is about bridging the digital divide, it is therefore important to recall that ICT carry a cultural

The Transformation Of Enkidu And Gilgamesh
Gilgamesh starts out as an immature, cruel and emotionally stunted character. He is described as
young and borne along by emotion by the elders of the city of Uruk before embarking on a foolhardy
and dangerous mission (II 289). Enkidu was created by the gods to be the equal of Gilgamesh, one
mighty in strength (MB Ni, pg. 4). Both Enkidu and Gilgamesh grow as characters; doors represent
transitions and mark key points where both characters mature. At these points they are put on the path
towards discovering what they should do with their lives and how they should approach the concept of
death. These transitions come in various forms, such as Enkidu stopping Gilgamesh s ruthlessness by
physically blocking him, Enkidu coming to terms with his certain death by disavowing a cedar door,
or Gilgamesh being questioned at the gates of Mashu by the scorpion people guardians. However, in
all cases, either one or both of the protagonists must reflect on their current state of moral
development.
One of the most significant ways that Gilgamesh matures is by becoming a good king. This process
begins right before the two heroes fight in Tablet II, demonstrated through the following narrative
description: Enkidu with his foot blocked the door of the wedding house, not allowing Gilgamesh to
enter (II 111 112). By physically preventing Gilgamesh from entering the house and taking advantage
of a bride, Enkidu shows that he is equal in strength to the king, and fulfills his initial

when we meet deeper needs. I was beginning to understand how my short term indulgences such as
chocolate provided dopamine satisfaction, which is not lasting. Yet when I meet deeper yearnings,
such as connecting with a friend and feeling felt, opioids are released. As I learned about the spiral of
wantings, I began to see how I was mistaking my dopamine induced feelings for gratifying
satisfaction. I became more aware of my Yearnings to feel comfort from my own anxiety and sadness.

As I learned more about how Harris viewed verbal and non verbal transactions between people and
the three states, the Parent, the Adult and the Child, I became more conscious of who I was in the
moment and discovered I had a choice of who I wanted to be in the moment. Harris describes the
mental state of the Parent as a collection of tape recordings representing what a child perceived adults
doing and saying. The recording comprises a long list of rules and admonitions that the child was
expected to believe unquestioningly. My parent recordings often reflected what I should or should not
be doing such as: I should be nice and happy, I should be agreeable, I should do what I am

Buddy flew around the room, figuring out about his new powers he now had, trying to control them.
The master came and told him, Control your powers young bear, for they will become more obvious
when you go to complete your quest. Come, and we will talk more about the adventure and your
powers I enchanted you with. The person you must choose, you will know when you see her, you will
just know she is the one.
Teresa Smith was now only 21. She dropped out of school, wanting to find her lost dad. It was when
she was nothing more than a fresh 9 year old. She was playing outside when her parents went inside to
have more fun with their friends. Her parents fought a lot, but Teresa never thought about this until her

she would give the bear to a little kid trying to make them happy. Immediately after thinking that, a

By the end of that day, she thought she knew what she was doing with these powers she figured out

Apparently they were the bullies of the school, just who she wanted to hang around with. After
finishing high school, she started causing a whole bunch of trouble. She threw stuffed animals at
people and they never knew what happened. One day, she went to cause trouble, but forgot the bear

Should Victorian High Schools Repeal Vce Exams
Should Victorian High Schools Repeal VCE Exams
I m sure every student here today would agree that not having to take VCE exams is a pretty good
idea. Repealing VCE exams would be a radical change for any high school. Acknowledgement from
your teacher that you already know the material instead of proving that you know how to take a test.
High school students face a stressful and strenuous time and are challenged by the vigorous
preparation for VCE exams. The do or die VCE exams students face is a crisis time for them, instead
of thinking about their graduation. Expecting students to take these exams is unfair due to its
numerous reasons of unfairness and should not take place. The Victorian school board should repeal
these exams.
Students do not learn in the same way, they are individuals. Thankfully for society, students bring to
schools all kinds of intellect. Some students excel academically, others are artistic talents and others
have vocational talents that VCE exams do not take into consideration or measure.
The focus of my arguments for repealing VCE exams is that:
Necessary funding for schools consistently rears its ugly head and these exams prove to be very
expensive. I believe, very much a waste of money. The money could be better spent on school
materials like books, computers, and other necessary supplies. The allocated funding could also be
well spent on hiring more teachers, so that classes could be smaller and students receive more

The Problem of Obesity
The Problem of Obesity
Western Governors University
Collegiate Level Reasoning and Problem Solving
James Reed
The Problem of Obesity Obesity is a major problem in American. Year after year, new diets are
published, and new medications are hailed as wonder drugs that will take weight off with little
physical effort, yet the problem still exists unabated. In testimony before the US Congress, Berzins
(2001) asserted that, [weight] is a complex result of heredity, culture and lifestyle. According to Rosin
(2004), About one third of the U.S. population is 20 percent or more overweight and is therefore at
risk of suffering high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular diseases. Finding the

They assume that if the number of sidewalks and bike paths are increased, people will be more
inclined to exercise and drive less. However, just because more of these will be built does not ensure
they will be used by the public. They believe the government should impose a tax on food they deem
detrimental to our health, regulate the ways this food is advertised, and limit its accessibility.
However, at a time when both houses of congress are controlled by the Republicans, a party whose
philosophy is they who govern least govern best, it is unrealistic to think that additional taxes and
bureaucracy will be considered an effective strategy. The authors propose a three step solution to the
problem. First, initiate a twinkie tax on sodas and junk food. Next, the food industry should be
regulated, even if it only comes in the form of banning junk food ads aimed at children. Finally, limit
the places where unhealthy foods are available ...through zoning and planning (2004). The limitations
of these suggestions are numerous. Americans feel overtaxed already, hence the Republican revolution
we have seen in recent years. Secondly, people do not like being told what is right or wrong for them,
which is what regulation insinuates. Third, in a capitalist society, why should any

Emile Durkheim, Franz Boas, And Clifford Geertz Summary
Emile Durkheim, Franz Boas, and Clifford Geertz were three very influential men in the study of
anthropology. Durkheim became one of the first scientists to consider culture and society worthy of
study, Boas refined and corrected theories hypothesized by Durkheim and others, and Geertz set an
example of how to conduct ethnographies that is still used to this day. Emile Durkheim lived during
the rise of the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution. These changes in his own society made
him question the origin of state and the evolution of social complexity (Moore, 2000). To answer these
questions, Durkheim believed that all societies should be studied through scientific research
methodology, because Durkheim viewed sociology as the science of societies (p. 43). Through this
method, Durkheim developed a variety of hypotheses about society and its evolution; there were two
forms of social integration, mechanical and organic solidarity. Mechanical solidarity was a
homogeneous society with individuals resembling each other in their positions in society and in their
values and views, creating a conscience collective. In an organic solidarity society, each member of
society is more of an individual, each playing a different role but ultimately under the control of a
central organ (p. 47). Societies naturally transition from a mechanical solidarity society to an organic
solidarity society, according to Durkheim, gradually losing the homogeneity, conscience collective,

WHO DIED AND NAMED YOU SUPERIOR
What are some of the characteristics that makes humans a distinct species? According to National
Geographic s article, Minds of Their Own , higher capability human like characteristics include, good
memory, a grasp of grammar and symbols, self awareness, understanding others motives, imitating
others, and being creative (Morell). Because humans possess all these skills we automatically assume
we are the dominant race. What if we knew animals possessed these skills as well? Would we still
think we are superior? The fact is that, animals share and express human like capabilities.
Authors like Jonathan Swift have used their works to shine a light on the similarities between humans
and animals. In Part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well surprise, animals have dialects too. According to the Huffington Post Science article, Human
Intelligence , killer whales share a complex language of their own and dolphins have individual names
just like [humans] based on whistle signals (Mosbergen). Similarly, Professor Con Slobodchikoff,
from Northern Arizona University, has been studying and recording the calls of the Gunnison s prairie
dog for three decades (Edwards). Based off of these recordings many other scientists have discovered
that the evolved complex language of the prairie dogs contain varying numbers of frequency
modulations, barks, squeals and squeaks, and each animal has unique tonal qualities (Edwards). Not
only have animals established different dialects, like humans, animals speak and understand extremely
complicated speaking patterns that humans have failed to notice on a daily basis.
Scientists recognize specific skills as key signs of high cognitive abilities: they include...self
awareness amongst many other variables (Gaertner). Self awareness is the pivot point upon which all
development depends (Craig). And without self awareness there is no way to anchor your journey, no
way to orient yourself, no way of knowing if you are losing or finding your way (Craig). Clearly being
self aware is extremely important to the development and livelihood of the human race. It s such an
important trait that all humans are taught to inherit it

Descriptive Essay About The Cemetery
The cemetery I chose to visit and explore was the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. On the way to
the cemetery I couldn t help but feel anxious. When I began to drive past the cemetery to its entrance,
all I could see were miles and miles of headstones. It was eerie to say the least. As a kid, whenever my
family would drive by a cemetery, my siblings and I would hold our breath until we passed so as to
not breathe in the wandering, lost souls. Actually going into a cemetery to look around seemed
counterintuitive, I wasn t sure if I would be able to hold my breath for that long. It didn t help that
right when I entered those black gates that separated the living from the dead, clouds of smoke and ash
permeated the air around me due to bodies being cremated on site. ... Show more content on

The fear I held as a child that my body would become a vessel for other souls to enter was intensified.
This was my first impression of my first time in a cemetery and I was not off to a good start. As I
grabbed a map to find my way around, I began to dread the walk through the cemetery and having to
see all the lives lost, especially those who lost their lives before they even really began. However, to
my surprise, as I made my way through the graveyard this feeling of sadness slipped away. The sun
began to shine through the clouds of gray and illuminated both the cemetery and my mood. I was
delighted to notice that many of the tombstones I encountered read that these lives that were lost were
not taken too soon. Most of the people had lived over eighty years and were buried next to fellow
family members who also lived just as long. It was nice to see that many people were laid to rest next
to family so they wouldn t have to enter the next life

Third Last Quality Essay
All good books must have three specific qualities. The first quality is believable characters. The
second quality is a well written plot. The third last quality is a universal theme. With Every Breath is a
novel written by Elizabeth Camden. In the novel, Kate Livingston, a young widow, is hired by Dr.
Trevor McKendall who was her competitor for a college scholarship during their high school years.
From the day of her interview, Kate learns that there are many mysteriously deep secrets hidden in her
future boss from the past years after their high school day.. After Kate gets hired, she begins to ponder
why her boss changed his last name after he graduated high school, and where he was during 1987
1989, his two missing years. Most importantly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A universal theme is an idea that is shared around the world no matter the cultural differences.
Elizabeth Camden managed to inflict universal ideas of right of free will, loving at all times and an
individual vs. society. Both Trevor and Kate shared deep feelings for eachother. When Kate found
Trevor s devastating health documents, Trevor did not try to deny their facts. Instead, Trevor assured
that they were true. He let Kate know that his life truly could be on the line any day. Nonetheless,
Trevor promised Kate that if she would take her leap of faith in their love, then he would love her with
every breath he was given. Trevor granted Kate her right to free will. He let her decide if she would be
willing to take her risk on him by trusting God s unseen plan in their life together. I m not a good long
term bet, but I care for you He leaned forward giving her time to pull away if she chose. Whatever
Kate decided in this moment would change the course of his whole life. Before Kate made any
decision, Trevor was attempting to embed into her mind that true love isn t the love that is shared in
the good times, it s the love that s kept through the valleys and mountains of life. I love you, but you
don t know the meaning of the word. You only love when it is easy, when there are no storm clouds in
the horizon. (Camden 238) Throughout the story, Trevor has someone criticizing and threatening him
for his mistakes that he s made while treating his patients. The threats are found in newspapers and
magazines that are sold to the public. Therefore, Trevor is looked down upon in the community
surrounding him. Trevor does not back down and give up. Instead he stands up to fight the
preconceptions that society had of him until he would prove his true

  • 2. The Theme Of Herman Melville sBartleby, The Scrivener Herman Melville s short story Bartleby, the Scrivener reveals different themes such as isolation and human morality test. In the story, the narrator runs a law firm and has a new Scrivener [Bartleby] who the narrator describes as the strangest I ever saw or heard of (661). For the first few days, Bartleby is seen to be working fine, however, one day Bartleby just responds with I would prefer not to when anyone assigns a task to Bartleby (674). The real problems start to arise when Bartleby sleeps and eats at the office while denying to work or leave. The narrator illustrates the two main themes of human morals and isolation throughout the story with the use of biblical references to Bartleby as a leper and shows symbolism of the ... The lawyer then decides to pay Bartleby a twenty dollar bill over and above whatever [is in Bartleby s account] and tell him his services are not necessary (674).The lawyer throws money at Bartleby instead of handing it to him in his hands. The lawyer is trying to get rid of Bartleby to let the law firm make money. Melville portrays a constant war of conscience in the lawyer s mind regarding Bartleby s actions and the lawyer s reactions. The lawyer goes to church regularly yet does not show the Christian beliefs and ethics. As the story progresses, the lawyer decides to leave the current office and shift to another office in hopes that Bartleby will not follow the company. Bartleby remains at the office and does not move however the new employees find Bartleby s old employer. The new employees ask whether the lawyer knows Bartleby. The lawyer responds by I certainly cannot inform you. I know nothing about him (682). The fact that the lawyer straight up denies knowing anyone named Bartleby is a biblical reference to Christ being denied by Peter (Zlogar 525). The lawyer denies knowing Bartleby to avoid any issues that could affect the law firm. On the other hand, Peter denies knowing Christ to avoid any punishments from Christ. Zlogar implicates that Bartleby initially comes to the narrator as the leper comes to Christ (Zlogar 511). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pericles Funeral Oration Speech Summary Pericles (495 429 BCE) whose name means Surrounded by glory was a young influential Greek aristocrat who was more than just a ruler of Athens: He was a politician, a prominent statesman (with influences in Art), a General (in Greek Strategoi ) with significant leadership capabilities and an influential figure that played a crucial role in inspiring not only the people of Athens through all his endeavors but generations to come with his inspiring funeral oration speech for the dead Athenians who fought in battle. • 4. The Role Of Engineers In Mary Shelley s Frankenstein Engineers hold a valuable place in our society. They lay the groundwork for and create artifacts based on the foundation of knowledge that science grants. In our culture, however, it is not uncommon for people to be confused about the role that engineers play. Often times, engineers are portrayed as being skilled and knowledgeable, but lack a sense of moral responsibility for their creations. This mentality is shown in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein, in which, the inventor, Victor Frankenstein attempts to defy the natural laws of life and death without first considering the consequences. This phenomenon is not just present in works of fiction. The man who designed the atom bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, said to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Catcher In The Rye Isolation Quotes By the end of the novel, Holden learns to accept society for what it is and accept the fact that kids do not necessarily need his protection from society or any of its prejudices, judgements, or expectations. This does not mean that he cannot help them, as he can stay there and be waiting for them to at least reduce the pain undergone due to the aforementioned societal aspects whenever they need his help. After a single day and a deep, meaningful, and serious talk with Mr. Antolini, Holden adapts to fit this role ideally. When he is about to leave for Mr. Antolini s house, Holden [takes] [his] hunting hat out of [his] coat pocket and [gives] it to [Phoebe]. She likes those kind of crazy hats. She [does not] want to take it, but [he] [makes] her. (Salinger, 198 199). Here, Holden gives the hat to Phoebe in hopes that it will protect her from whatever societal harshness or hardships she undergoes while he is at Mr. Antolini s house. This hunting hat jointly symbolizes protection and isolation. It is a way of isolating oneself from all of the phony people because as Holden himself admits on multiple occasions, it is ugly and displeasing to the eye. This could potentially be a way by which he tries to deter himself from all of the phoniness in the world. One type of phonies are those who take everything at face value, and by wearing this hat, Holden deters at least them. That could even be the reason why he likes this hat so much: the fact that it makes him come into contact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the short story The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant, Madam Loisel says No... there s nothing more humiliating as looking poor in the middle of a lot of rich women. In this passage Madam Loisel was worried about how people would perceive her at the party. I the story was about a couple who was not very wealthy unlike most of their friends. • 11. Job Plan For A Career Plan A career is defined by a sequence of positions, opportunities and windows that open and close says Alain Gosselin, Professor and Associate Director of Executive Education and leaders at HEC Montreal. This is why it may be useful to have a plan and update it if necessary. Often absorbed in their everyday life, students have trouble taking time to breathe and plan their week, not to talk about building a career plan. However, it is necessary to not wait until you are limited to think about it. Even though it was not appreciated in the past, the issue of labor mobility has now become an asset for executives. Today, someone who has acquired multiple experiences in several industries will be valued for his skills. Similarly, someone who has lived in many countries will be the resource person to support the implementation of a local agency. Contrary to what some may think, having a career plan does not betray an inordinate ambition. In some cases, it is even the trigger to find a better balance between family life and professional life. In this sense, a career plan has become necessary refocus on strategic choices. For a long time, I have been passionate about new technologies. Before beginning my bachelor, I was already interested in network systems. I even completed a Cisco system administrator certificate and taught the subject for one year. Additionally, since my childhood, I have always thought about creating my own company and I have a tantrum for helping people. Above ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is of vital importance when referring to Disney and CSR the reason being a benchmark is required in order to assess the success of any campaign that gets run by Disney. It is easy to see that Disney has set themselves extremely high targets wanting their CSR projects to be of the same standard as their day to day business and want to be the best company in the world for CSR. Currently Disney is ranked number 1 in the world for CSR by Forbes in a four way tie along with Microsoft, BMW and Google. This means that they have already met one of their goals and even exceeded it by being rated more highly in terms of CSR rather than their actual business as their current rating on business success is 108th in the world. • 23. The Transformation Of Enkidu And Gilgamesh Gilgamesh starts out as an immature, cruel and emotionally stunted character. He is described as young and borne along by emotion by the elders of the city of Uruk before embarking on a foolhardy and dangerous mission (II 289). Enkidu was created by the gods to be the equal of Gilgamesh, one mighty in strength (MB Ni, pg. 4). Both Enkidu and Gilgamesh grow as characters; doors represent transitions and mark key points where both characters mature. At these points they are put on the path towards discovering what they should do with their lives and how they should approach the concept of death. These transitions come in various forms, such as Enkidu stopping Gilgamesh s ruthlessness by physically blocking him, Enkidu coming to terms with his certain death by disavowing a cedar door, or Gilgamesh being questioned at the gates of Mashu by the scorpion people guardians. However, in all cases, either one or both of the protagonists must reflect on their current state of moral development. One of the most significant ways that Gilgamesh matures is by becoming a good king. This process begins right before the two heroes fight in Tablet II, demonstrated through the following narrative description: Enkidu with his foot blocked the door of the wedding house, not allowing Gilgamesh to enter (II 111 112). By physically preventing Gilgamesh from entering the house and taking advantage of a bride, Enkidu shows that he is equal in strength to the king, and fulfills his initial ... Spiral Of Wants Analysis Spiral of Wantings From a Neuroscience perspective, I learned how neuroscientists have identified different pleasure centers in the brain relating to wanting or craving and another area relating to feelings of deeper satisfaction. Drs. Wright wrote about the brain s pleasure centers: Dopamine is released in our brain when we anticipate and indulge our wants or cravings, while opioids are released when we meet deeper needs. I was beginning to understand how my short term indulgences such as chocolate provided dopamine satisfaction, which is not lasting. Yet when I meet deeper yearnings, such as connecting with a friend and feeling felt, opioids are released. As I learned about the spiral of wantings, I began to see how I was mistaking my dopamine induced feelings for gratifying satisfaction. I became more aware of my Yearnings to feel comfort from my own anxiety and sadness. This is when I quit drinking alcohol on a regular basis. . • 26. Should Victorian High Schools Repeal Vce Exams Should Victorian High Schools Repeal VCE Exams I m sure every student here today would agree that not having to take VCE exams is a pretty good idea. Repealing VCE exams would be a radical change for any high school. Acknowledgement from your teacher that you already know the material instead of proving that you know how to take a test. High school students face a stressful and strenuous time and are challenged by the vigorous preparation for VCE exams. The do or die VCE exams students face is a crisis time for them, instead of thinking about their graduation. Expecting students to take these exams is unfair due to its numerous reasons of unfairness and should not take place. The Victorian school board should repeal these exams. Students do not learn in the same way, they are individuals. Thankfully for society, students bring to schools all kinds of intellect. Some students excel academically, others are artistic talents and others have vocational talents that VCE exams do not take into consideration or measure. The focus of my arguments for repealing VCE exams is that: Necessary funding for schools consistently rears its ugly head and these exams prove to be very expensive. I believe, very much a waste of money. The money could be better spent on school materials like books, computers, and other necessary supplies. The allocated funding could also be well spent on hiring more teachers, so that classes could be smaller and students receive more individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, at a time when both houses of congress are controlled by the Republicans, a party whose philosophy is they who govern least govern best, it is unrealistic to think that additional taxes and bureaucracy will be considered an effective strategy. The authors propose a three step solution to the problem. First, initiate a twinkie tax on sodas and junk food. Next, the food industry should be regulated, even if it only comes in the form of banning junk food ads aimed at children. Finally, limit the places where unhealthy foods are available ...through zoning and planning (2004). The limitations of these suggestions are numerous. • 28. Emile Durkheim, Franz Boas, And Clifford Geertz Summary Emile Durkheim, Franz Boas, and Clifford Geertz were three very influential men in the study of anthropology. Durkheim became one of the first scientists to consider culture and society worthy of study, Boas refined and corrected theories hypothesized by Durkheim and others, and Geertz set an example of how to conduct ethnographies that is still used to this day. Emile Durkheim lived during the rise of the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution. These changes in his own society made him question the origin of state and the evolution of social complexity (Moore, 2000). To answer these questions, Durkheim believed that all societies should be studied through scientific research methodology, because Durkheim viewed sociology as the science of societies (p. 43). Through this method, Durkheim developed a variety of hypotheses about society and its evolution; there were two forms of social integration, mechanical and organic solidarity. Mechanical solidarity was a homogeneous society with individuals resembling each other in their positions in society and in their values and views, creating a conscience collective. In an organic solidarity society, each member of society is more of an individual, each playing a different role but ultimately under the control of a central organ (p. 47). Societies naturally transition from a mechanical solidarity society to an organic solidarity society, according to Durkheim, gradually losing the homogeneity, conscience collective, ... According to the Huffington Post Science article, Human Intelligence , killer whales share a complex language of their own and dolphins have individual names just like [humans] based on whistle signals (Mosbergen). Similarly, Professor Con Slobodchikoff, from Northern Arizona University, has been studying and recording the calls of the Gunnison s prairie dog for three decades (Edwards). Based off of these recordings many other scientists have discovered that the evolved complex language of the prairie dogs contain varying numbers of frequency modulations, barks, squeals and squeaks, and each animal has unique tonal qualities (Edwards). Not only have animals established different dialects, like humans, animals speak and understand extremely complicated speaking patterns that humans have failed to notice on a daily basis. Self awareness is the pivot point upon which all development depends (Craig). When I began to drive past the cemetery to its entrance, all I could see were miles and miles of headstones. It was eerie to say the least.
