SHENZHEN MIDDLE SCHOOL
School Profile 2015- 2016
SCHOOL INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1947, Shenzhen Middle School (SMS) is the oldest and flagship public
secondary institution in the namesake city of Shenzhen. In November 1993, SMS
became one of the first Class-One schools of Guangdong Province. As the city of
Shenzhen developed rapidly into one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises
in the world over the past few decades, SMS has also risen to become one of the
finest secondary schools nationally and globally.
STUDENTS
As with the rest of Chinese public secondary schools, the promotion and placement
of students within the Chinese education system are depended upon the result of
the student’s standardized upper secondary entrance examination.
Every year, 50,000+ students in Shenzhen will take the upper secondary school
entrance examination for upper secondary schools (Zhong Kao). SMS being the
most selective school in the city, will only offer admission to the top 3% of Zhong
Kao test takers and sets high expectations and standards for its students.
Each year, more than 40 SMS students are accepted into Peking University and
Tsinghua University (The top 2 Universities in China). SMS holds the highest
admission rate in all of Guangdong Province. 100% of the International Curriculum
Grade 12 students will enter top universities around the world.
80% of the National Curriculum students will attend tier 1 universities in China and
are among the top in China with regards to awards in the area of science with
participation in both national and international Science Olympiads Competitions
annually. International Curriculum students also participate in various
international competitions such as the National Forensic League Debate, MIT
InvenTeam, and U.S. Invitational Young Physicists Tournament with great success;
frequently earning the highest accolades.

CURRICULUMS
Additional Specialized Curriculum (National/International):
National Curriculum (Graduating Class Size: 788)
Students under National Curriculum must choose one of the following three specializations:
x Standard Additional Curriculum - The Standard Curriculum sets the course based on the requirement of the
Education Bureau.
x Experimental Curriculum - The Experimental Curriculum is an extension of the National Curriculum with a
localized context.
x Gifted Curriculum - The Gifted Curriculum is highly selective and is also the most rigorous science and math
curriculum in Chinese Secondary Education. These course offerings often approach university level in rigor and
include research and self-study programs. Gifted Curriculum students often self-study for AP exams and
perform excellently in the science and math subjects.
International Curriculum (Graduating Class Size: 200)
The mission of the International Curriculum (IC) is to equip fully engaged learners to be productive scholars and
individuals through fully-integrated courses and activities, which empower students to embrace an appreciation
of the broader world. Embracing our own culture while being comfortable with the diversity that is required of
cross-cultural education prepares IC alumni to better communicate with peers from around the globe and
perform in the classroom as intellectuals and highly motivated students. The established culture within IC
promotes the development of future leaders in various disciplines. IC students may choose from a selection of
over 20 rigorous AP and College Prep courses. In this way, IC students learn in an integrated pedagogy under the
guidance of Western and Chinese faculty. A part of this heurism is three years of learning in applied critical
thinking. IC students that spend three years in the curriculum possess a near-native functional use of English as a
tool for academic and social engagement. In addition, IC students bring a mastery of Chinese literature, math and
science to the college and university environment, which is demonstrated in how they assimilate into campus life
and post-secondary learning at the collegiate level.
Note: The International Curriculum is an integral part of the diversified curriculums in Shenzhen Middle School.
It is managed and operated internally and entirely by SMS. The International Curriculum of SMS is not affiliated
with any external for-profit education companies or groups. The requirement and recruitment standard of IC
students are identical to the rest of the SMS, with the added requirement of even more rigorous English ability.

SMS School Profile 15-16

  • 1. SHENZHEN MIDDLE SCHOOL School Profile 2015- 2016 SCHOOL INTRODUCTION Founded in 1947, Shenzhen Middle School (SMS) is the oldest and flagship public secondary institution in the namesake city of Shenzhen. In November 1993, SMS became one of the first Class-One schools of Guangdong Province. As the city of Shenzhen developed rapidly into one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises in the world over the past few decades, SMS has also risen to become one of the finest secondary schools nationally and globally. STUDENTS As with the rest of Chinese public secondary schools, the promotion and placement of students within the Chinese education system are depended upon the result of the student’s standardized upper secondary entrance examination. Every year, 50,000+ students in Shenzhen will take the upper secondary school entrance examination for upper secondary schools (Zhong Kao). SMS being the most selective school in the city, will only offer admission to the top 3% of Zhong Kao test takers and sets high expectations and standards for its students. Each year, more than 40 SMS students are accepted into Peking University and Tsinghua University (The top 2 Universities in China). SMS holds the highest admission rate in all of Guangdong Province. 100% of the International Curriculum Grade 12 students will enter top universities around the world. 80% of the National Curriculum students will attend tier 1 universities in China and are among the top in China with regards to awards in the area of science with participation in both national and international Science Olympiads Competitions annually. International Curriculum students also participate in various international competitions such as the National Forensic League Debate, MIT InvenTeam, and U.S. Invitational Young Physicists Tournament with great success; frequently earning the highest accolades. • 2. CURRICULUMS Additional Specialized Curriculum (National/International): National Curriculum (Graduating Class Size: 788) Students under National Curriculum must choose one of the following three specializations: x Standard Additional Curriculum - The Standard Curriculum sets the course based on the requirement of the Education Bureau. x Experimental Curriculum - The Experimental Curriculum is an extension of the National Curriculum with a localized context. x Gifted Curriculum - The Gifted Curriculum is highly selective and is also the most rigorous science and math curriculum in Chinese Secondary Education. These course offerings often approach university level in rigor and include research and self-study programs. Gifted Curriculum students often self-study for AP exams and perform excellently in the science and math subjects. International Curriculum (Graduating Class Size: 200) The mission of the International Curriculum (IC) is to equip fully engaged learners to be productive scholars and individuals through fully-integrated courses and activities, which empower students to embrace an appreciation of the broader world. Embracing our own culture while being comfortable with the diversity that is required of cross-cultural education prepares IC alumni to better communicate with peers from around the globe and perform in the classroom as intellectuals and highly motivated students. The established culture within IC promotes the development of future leaders in various disciplines. IC students may choose from a selection of over 20 rigorous AP and College Prep courses. In this way, IC students learn in an integrated pedagogy under the guidance of Western and Chinese faculty. A part of this heurism is three years of learning in applied critical thinking. IC students that spend three years in the curriculum possess a near-native functional use of English as a tool for academic and social engagement. In addition, IC students bring a mastery of Chinese literature, math and science to the college and university environment, which is demonstrated in how they assimilate into campus life and post-secondary learning at the collegiate level. Note: The International Curriculum is an integral part of the diversified curriculums in Shenzhen Middle School. It is managed and operated internally and entirely by SMS. The International Curriculum of SMS is not affiliated with any external for-profit education companies or groups. The requirement and recruitment standard of IC students are identical to the rest of the SMS, with the added requirement of even more rigorous English ability. Additional courses offered by the International Curriculum: Senior 1 (Grade 10) College Prep: AP Calculus A/B AP Human Geography AP Physics B Honors English Public Speaking Senior 2 (Grade 11) College Level: AP Calculus B/C AP Micro-Economics AP Physics B AP World History English Foundations/College Prep.
