It accepts high-performing sophomores and provides them with a rigorous college curriculum, allowing them to earn an associate's degree. The school aims to provide both academic excellence through challenging college courses as well as student development opportunities through extracurricular activities and community service. Students consistently achieve high ACT scores and GPAs that exceed state averages.
The Community College Futures Assembly announced 10 finalist programs in each of 3 categories - Instructional Programs and Services, Planning, Governance and Finance, and Workforce Development - for the 2016 Bellwether Awards. Nearly 300 programs from across the country applied to be considered as Bellwether finalists. The 10 finalists in each category were selected based on their innovative programs that foster teaching and learning, improve community college efficiency and effectiveness, or promote community and economic development through strategic partnerships. The finalists will present their programs at the Assembly's annual meeting in January 2016, where winners from each category will be selected.

University Academy is a K-12 charter public school that serves 1000+ students who reside within the boundaries of the Kansas City, MO school district. The mission of the school is to prepare students to succeed in an institution of higher education and to become leaders in society. Alumni of the school have a college completion rate that is more than 5x the national average for students from lowest quartile income families.
In 2017, the U.S. Department of Education honored University Academy's Upper School with National Blue Ribbon School recognition based on exemplary academic performance over the last 5 years. University Academy was the first charter public school to receive this honor in Missouri and the only Missouri high school in 2017. This recognition is considered the highest honor an American K-12 school can receive.
The presentation introduced the Towson UTeach Program, Towson University’s new teacher preparation program for students pursuing teaching certification in secondary school mathematics or science (grades 7-12). Three hallmarks of the program were discussed: early and frequent field placements at public schools; coaching by Towson University master teachers who are former public school teachers with exemplary teaching and leadership experience, and education courses devoted to the learning and teaching of mathematics and science. The program’s emphasis on teaching using inquiry, constructivism, and technology was explored.

This workshop will discuss the advantages of African American males enrolled into rigorous courses, such as Advanced Placement (AP). Research has demonstrated that these students are more likely to do well and graduate high school. Additionally, AP students increase their opportunities to earn college scholarships and graduate college in four years. Workshop participants will acquire knowledge that will encourage African American males to accept the challenge of academic rigor, which can help to minimize the academic achievement gap.

This document discusses strategies used by Houston Community College to build a pipeline of STEM success for Hispanic students. It notes that HCC graduates more Hispanic students with associate degrees than any other community college in the US. The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) is the state of Alabama’s only fully public residential high
school for highly motivated sophomores, juniors, and seniors seeking advanced studies in math, science, and the humanities.
The Alabama State Legislature founded ASMS in 1989 to “better prepare Alabama’s future leaders” for STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and math) careers. Furthermore, ASMS was established to meet the challenge of providing a
world-class education to top students from across Alabama who do not have local access to a challenging education.
COMMUNITY
ASMS is located in Mobile, a diverse city found in the southwest corner of Alabama with a population of just under
200,000. The recruitment of candidates encompasses the state’s 67 counties.

ASMS offers Advanced Placement courses in
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science A,
Environmental Science, Physics B, Physics C,
Studio Art, English Literature and United States
History. Students are encouraged to take AP exams
to receive college credit for the course and students
may opt to take an AP exam in a subject area even
though ASMS does not offer a designated AP
course. Recent examples include Calculus AB and
BC, English Language, Spanish Language, French
Language, German Language, Macroeconomics,
and Psychology. In 2016, 122 students took 235
exams with 68% of the scores at 3 or above.

Students are expected to complete a minimum of
27 Carnegie Units to satisfy the school’s graduation
requirement.Additionally, students must maintain

GRADING
A unweighted cumulative gpa is reported, which
includes transfer coursework from the freshman
and possibly sophomore years. As all students have
transfer credit, it is school policy not to rank our
students. All ASMS academic courses are taught
at the Honors level or above, and all students are
required to maintain an academic gpa of 2.5. A
final course grade of “C” or higher is required for
course credit and awarding of quality points. Our
grading scale is as follows: 90–100 A; 80–89 B;
70–79 C; 60–69 D; 59-below F; repeated course R.
