1. Since the beginning of the academic year 2018-19, we all have been enjoying
cancelled lectures and suspension of lectures for weeks. Also, the memes related
to teacher's and student's protest competition in DU. But only few of us know
why exactlysuchunusualthingshappenedandarehappeningevennow!
DUTA is the abbreviation for Delhi University Teacher's Association who have
been protesting since, the beginning of the academic year 2018-19 due to some
longunfulfilleddemands.
Though, the evaluation boycott is not something that happened for the first time
but earlier in 2006, the final year students were exempted from the evaluation
boycott.
But this year, even the final year students are not spared and their future has been
puttostake,duetodelayinresults!
But the question is, 'Are the demands of DUTAso significant that it is justified to
putstudent's futureatstake?â
WHAT DUTA STRIKE IS ALL ABOUT?
TheDelhiUniversityTeacher'sAssociationhavebeenprotestingmainlyagainst:
Recent agitation of grant of autonomy to universities across the country by
UGC.
Also, 'Graded Autonomy', according to which the colleges that perform better
willbegrantedgreaterautonomybased ona graded scale.
The proposed 30:70 funding method under which central universities are
expectedtoraise 30%ofthefinancialburdenontheirown.
The proposal that replaces grants for universities with loans through The
HigherEducationFundingAgency(HEFA),demandingitswithdrawal.
They demand Permanency of adhoc teachers, Pay parity with all India services
andRestorationofMPhil,PhDincrements.
DUTA STRIKE AFFECTING THE STUDENTS OF DELHI UNIVERSITY!
Delhi University, one of the most famous universities of India. Every year lakhs
of students come to be a part of the same through various ways like SOL,
regular college, NCWEB etc. The University welcomes millions every year
through it's cut-throat competition! We quantitatively know about the courses
and faculties that DU boasts off. But, let's for once have a glance at the
quantitative aspects...That is the rankings of DU within India, Asia and all over
the World.
The ranking hierarchization is as follows:
1.) The University has maintained it's position at the top in the country as per
the Centre for World University Rankings.
2.) It has been ranked as 8th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework.
3.) It is also among the top 10 Indian Public Educational
Institution/universities.
4.) It was ranked as 1st in the QS BRICS university rankings.
5.) The h-index of the university touched 157, one of the highest among Indian
universities.
6.) According to theAsia University Rankings 2018!
Feeling proud eh?! Yes and above all this quantitative stats, the most virtuous
thing about DU is that it offers an institution for studies and researches to more
than 10 lakh students every year contributing the highest to our country's
literacy! So, cheers to all DUites!
AFFECT ON STUDENTS:
While all these are genuine concerns, the one who are actually suffering are the
'students'. DUTAhas been protesting for teacher's welfare at the cost of Student's
welfare, particularly the final year students who have been waiting patiently for
their results till now, as the admission process in varied colleges/universities
across the country and abroad have already begun and their applications will
remain pending until the declaration of results. This could lead to a 'gap year' for
manystudents.Thus,drasticallyaffectingtheirfuture!
DUTA'S Stand:
But as per the DUTA, it was the last resort for them as the University is being run
inanAutocraticmannerandtheyhavebeenforcedtotakethispath!
According to them, the agitation is not just 'teacher-centric' but when put into
effect, would affect students more than the teachers and that is why a large
number of students earlier lent its support to it, while an equal number chose to
remainindifferent.

AN OVERVIEW
THE LIFE OF A DU STUDENT
Get ready for some madness for the word 'fucchas' will make an appearance
in the Delhi University Dictionary again. Yes! It's admission timeIf you thought
scoring a minimum of 100% to make the cut (what? Don't roll your eyes),
queues in front of colleges, ECAs and admission schedules were the be all
and end all, here's a reminder to tell you that there is more to admissions than
that. You don't need the clichĂŠd tips and life hacks, my friend, what you need
to know is what we are about to tell you.
? MAGGI EQUALS FOOD
If your mother has indoctrinated you into
believing that Maggi doesn't qualify as a
legitimate meal, college is where you
unlearnthispieceof'Maternal gyaan'.
For all the outstation students, entering a
new city - BREAKFAST, LUNCH OR
DINNER, MAGGI IS ALWAYS THE
WINNER.
? THAT ONE SHADY SUTTA POINT
You will learn a lot about yourself and your 'adulting'
capabilities in college. One of them being your
drinking capacity. The second thing will be that
dilapidated little block near/outside/across your college
where you will find (lots of) cigarettes and 'chai'. The
deepest, most powerful conversations happen at these
points. This is also the place where you will get the best maal (not women, you
glamorous fool!). For anybody who is scandalised reading this, let's talk in a year.
You will be more than comfortable with the chai pe charchas over a pack of sutta,
by then.
? GRADES DON'T MATTER, ATTENDANCE DOES:
This isn't one of those attempts to dissuade you from
studying or to pull a smart one and tell you that
marks don't matter. Marks matter. Hell yes, they do.
Unless, of course, you are too much of a badass to
bother about the disapproving glances your
professors will give you for not doing well. But the
GOLDEN RULE PROXYMATTERS.for college:
? COLLEGE LINGO
If you ever reach your class and find
yourself dumb founded by the jargon, or if
you still find yourself frantically Googling
words, here's whatyoushould know.
From shortening names of popular
hangout places to creating cuss words that
you have would have never heard in
school, 'COLLEGE LINGO' IS
LITERALLYOURMOTHERTONGUE.
For example, 'SOC'- Society, 'SATYA'- Satya Niketan, 'PROXY'-
Attendance,'FUCCHAS'-Freshers,'CR'-ClassRepresentative etc.
? PROTESTS, ELECTIONS, SOCIETIES AND FESTS
These four words will define the 'happening' in the OH-
COLLEGE-IS-SO-AMAZING-AND-HAPPENING
sentiment. From orientation of cultural societies to
campaigning during elections, from the loud marches
of dissent to that time of the year when college erupts
into a three-day cultural festival, embrace and enjoy
eachmoment.
? THE DIRTY 'M' AND 'F' WORDS
The context of this is not (M)aal and (F)ree-
Maal. It's two provocative words - Marxism
and Feminism. While these two words have
been dreaded and vehemently bastardised,
you will greeted by several connotations,
luminal meanings and subtext of these
theories in class quite often. Oh also, don't
shy away from talking about them or using
them in your conversations. Being politically
discerning and critically soundwilltake youfar, not make you'cool'.
? BACHELORS IN SAVING MONEY
Apart from all the degrees you will get, you will also
graduate intheartof frugality if youare aDUstudent.
"Yaar, paise nahi hai yaar", will be your favourite
dialogue and the day your folks send you money from
home,your favouriteday.
? "BHAI KITNA PDA?"
Exhaustive studies have proven that 0.000685%
students prepare for exams 1-3 weeks in advance.
The rest, well, they spend on the night before. And
for all the Kunjis, Xerox notes, previous year
questions, tutorial notes and not to forget our
favourite 'Ten-year papers' that you will manage
to gather at the last moment, it's safe to say you
willsail theboat continuously.
One can go on rambling about 'Dilli' University, but for now, it's safe
to say that you will manage with these.

Here, we are talking about a real blind date.Just imagine your college planning a blind date for you. What if we tell you

Usually, socials can be between any boys and girls hostel. However, IIT-Delhi socials with DU colleges are always talk
of the town. The place where the sex ratio stands at 10:1 In IIT Delhi it's a freaking big deal to be able to talk to a girl.
One IITian shares an experience of sitting next to a girl mustering courage for around 15 minutes to just say a hi
Trustus,wearenotexaggerating anything.
Coming back to the concept of socials, we hope you all are really excited to know what exactly happens at these super-
secret blind dates in DU which you guys were unaware of until today. To break the suspense, we all know what it is like
to stay in a hostel for 3-4 years during your college. With time, you build a natural shyness. In order to deal with this
seriousproblem, colleges organize socials fortheirhostelstudentssothattheygetadequateexposure to theouter world. It'sa small get-together.
Starting with registrations, the boy's hostel organise the entire event. They really put in a lot of effort. There are performances, couple dances, DJ, games and
longconversations. It all startswithapapertodistinguishyourdateforthenight,eitherbynumber,or connectingthemusic.

1.Whatwasyourfirstreaction whenyouheardaboutthis conceptof socials inDU?
I was very excited as I went to a girls college. My interaction with guys was zero. I was really excited when I heard about it. I personally love making new friends
soIlovedtheConceptvery much.
2.Doyouthinktheconceptofsocials is equivalent to blinddates?
Yes, according to me blind dates and socials are equivalent. There is some difference as in blind dates we only interact with our partners whereas in socials we
interactwitheveryone.Theconceptismisunderstoodsometimes.Itisjustasocial event.Wedon'tusually go there to finda lifepartner.
3.Haveyouever attendedsocials? Ifyes,howwasyourexperience?
Yes I have attended two of them. My experience was nice. However, in both of these my partners were either too shy or too
clingy.Otherwise,myexperiencewasgood.Imadealotofgood friends.
4.Whatisitliketo stay ina hostel? Howimportantaresocials inthiscontext?
Living in hostel was my childhood dream. I always wanted to get into a hostel. So, In hostel my dream finally came true. It
has almost been an year now, but I can say that it is one of the most beautiful phases of my life. The kind of friends I have
met will always make me cherish my hostel life.According to me, socials are very important. Living in hostel, Interaction

5.Whatisthemostfascinating partaboutsocials?
The most fascinating thing about socials is that we get a chance to make new friends be it boys or even girls. Some of us are lucky enough they get life-long friends
and some get even their dates too.Anugya's perspective is similar to most of the girls studying in Women's colleges. The concept of socials is sometimes
misunderstood.Itisanopportunityforhostellers to interact andmakenewfriends. It's anattemptbythecollege to provide adequateexposure to thestudents.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM YOUR CELEBRITY SENIORS...
We all are aware of the fact that DU not
only produces the leaders and managers
of tomorrow but it has also shaped the
lives of various talented artists who have
now turned into celebrities and public
figures. KMC has Amitabh Bacchan,
Hansraj has our favourite SRK, but
there are some other celebrity seniors as
well, which we maybe unaware of. Let's
have a look
âDU taught me things that go beyond books and it
helps me in my everyday work till date. I really
canât say the things one shouldnât do in college
because they eventually find their own path.
Students should consider themselves lucky to
have gotten into a university that has so much to
offer â great faculty and teachers to look up to.
My experience being a JMC student has helped me
so much, even though I didnât study drama. Itâs
not about a subject, itâs about your growth. So
donât miss out on that.â
âMy years in DU taught me to be politically
conscious and socially aware. They made me
realise that India is made up of multiple
realities; all the extra-curricular and also
curricular courses I took up made me aware of
many social and political ills in India. Well, I
would only advise the new students to be
responsible and open-minded, and keep
distance from hooligans and lumpen elements
that sometimes dominate the student political
scene in DU.â

Opinion Poll: Reservation for Delhi Students in DU Colleges?
Delhi Assembly passed a resolution last year demanding 85% reservation of seats in the 28 Delhi University colleges funded by the
Delhi government for students from Delhi.
Do you Support 85% Reservation for Delhi Students in DU Colleges?
Undoubtedly, we are all aware that Delhi assembly
recently passed unanimously a resolution for 85%
reservation for Delhites, the logic behind is Delhi govt.
Believe as they are funding more than 20 colleges the
students from Delhi should get benefits out of it. However,
we are aware that university of Delhi is a brand where
every student be it from Delhi or any other state/country
wants to take admission in, to pursue their career. But with
85%reservation for Delhites not only the competition will be hindered but also
the deserved candidates will be deprived of taking admission in DU. So, of
course the admissions should be based on the marks of the students instead of
inculcating such policies so as to do the justice with the deserved candidates.-
Daman Jeet
This step to my opinion will have its compound response
into which there will be more cons than the pros. The pros
are that the students from Delhi will be encountered by
less competition and they won't have to interact with
people from a different culture. But when we reckon the
cons. we all know DU's essence lies in its diversification,
since it's a 'university'. Also, the students who aim to
study in the central university, despite being talented
won'tget a chance to doso.-Isha
According to my opinion, there should be 85% reservation
for delhites in DU colleges since we all know that there is a
huge competition in education and every student wants to
get into a good college and metropolitan city like Delhi
due to which we as a delhites have to go to other cities and
get admission there and hence are the sufferers.
Therefore, this policy should be there for Delhi students. -
Aashita
There should be reservation for Delhi students as it is their
sole right to be a part of Delhi University. If you talk about
JBIMS Mumbai it has a reservation for its own Maharashtra
students so why only Delhi students suffer ,so by having 85%
reservation is a right for every Delhi student. - Gurnoor
Reservation is a tragedy, our whole country is burning out of
it. In my opinion, only deservant should deserves admission in
Delhi University. Delhi is capital of India and it's a place to
high class education but reservation to delhites would led to
migration of an intelligent brain out or in vein. Delhites don't
need reservations they are capable of grabbing admission by
their own.-Bhavana
I believe there should not be 85% reservation for
delhites in DU colleges. Delhi University is a collegiate
public central university that should give equal rights to
learn and explore to every student across the country.
Moreover, It will also decrease the quality that Delhi
University get because of the cut throat competition.
More the reservation, lesser thequality.-Navyaa
Delhi is the capital of the country. Students from all over
the country come to study here at Delhi University. DU
is a central University, and any such step would be an
injustice to students from outside Delhi. The country is
already struggling with caste reservation which needs to
be modified. This strp would further deprive meritorious
students of quality education while giving an unfair
advantage to the students who are residents of Delhi.
Hence, In my opinion 85% reservation policy for Delhi students is
completely unjust.- Rohini

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT DELHI UNIVERSITY
E
st or west, Delhi University is the best, Chahe kitne bhi IPU and

many fascinating facts about Delhi University which we bet you still don't
know.Theyare givenbelow:
1. Every great story has a humble beginning:
Delhi University was established in
1922. It started with just 3 colleges
(St. Stephens, Hindu and Ramjas), 2
faculties and 750 students. Presently,
the University has 77 colleges, 86

The popular North Campus Ridge is the perfect place to hangout.
Simultaneously, it has many interesting stories to tell. The Flagstaff tower
in the Northern Ridge , which looks like
another building, is where the revolt of
1857 culminated. The Ridge also has the
Ashokan Pillar, which was moved from
Meerut to Delhi by Firoz Shah Tughlaq in
1356. Moreover, the lake there was
named Khooni Jheel because the water
had remained blood red for a couple of
days due to bloodshed. Quite historical!
5. Indian Coffee House - a lot happens over coffee here :
The Indian Coffee House, behind the VC's Office
is the ultimate coffee point of Delhi University
Students. It used to be an active hub for
politicians also. As per the sayings and research
work, it is believed that students and teachers

To put it directly, Delhi University Campus was
once called a haunted place. The area was
built near a cemetery and people wouldn't dare
to go there late in the evening. Even today, it is
believed that there is a special place or
perhaps, a ground at the back of Shri Ram
College of Commerce, which used to be a
grave and if people are to be believed, spirits still haunt that place and it
is advisable not to go there after 6-7 p.m.
8. Vice Regal Lodge - In times of Love and war :
The present office of the Vice Chancellor of
Delhi University hides many secrets behind it.

Mountbatten proposed his wife Edwina for
marriage at the Vice Regal Lodge only? Also,

Singh was held captive for a day in this building

In the nutshell, Delhi University is a perfect blend of history, love, war and
horror. The campus has its roots in history, isn't it? So now, that you have come

We can't complete a single sentence without using this sweet word. We asked
one of the freshers as to what it means. She said, I think it means Before
Christ and it is also a short form of because.(Humne usse maaf kar diya,

in front of your parents. Agar aap bhi humari tarah ye shabd ka very often

DU Fest Season
The most exciting thing for every DUite is the Fest Season of
Delhi University which happens to be in the month of
February and March every year. It is also the most confusing
part of the year, deciding which college fest to attend, and
which one to miss?, deciding what to wear and arranging the
passesforpopularfests.
So, to minimise the confusion, here are the three fests every
DUitemustattendatleast onceintheircollege life!
o Mecca: Mecca is the annual cultural festival of Hindu
College and is considered as the most popular fests of Delhi
Univeristy.
o Crossroads: Crossroad of Sri Ram College of Commerce,
SRCCis another 'mustattendfest of DelhiUniversity!'
o Renaissance: The annual cultural festival of Kirori Mal College, 'Renaissance'
isregardedas'themostawaitedfestival of DU'.
The fests are not only about popular celebrities, mostly singers invited in colleges
to perform but it also provides a stage to students from different universities and
colleges to come up and showcase their talents! Different events take place such as
Dance Competition, Debate Competition, Fashion Show, NukkadNatak, Band
Competition,Theatreactingandmanymorewhichareamazing to watch!

o Hansraj College: Due to excess crowd, the barricades broke off and a student
accidently stepped on gas cylinder meant
for smoke effect and fog during the
performance. As soon as the gas started
leaking,thesingerDiljit left immediately.
o Kirori Mal College: Sachin Jigar, just a
day prior the event cancelled the show
scheduled for the last of Renaissance in
Kirori Mal College. The reason claimed by
him on social networking sites was
'managerial issues'.
o Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied
Sciences: Akhil scolded by the college
principal on stage in Shaheed Rajguru
College of Applied Sciences for coming 1hour 15 minutes late. She
mentioned 'This is a girls college and we have some decorum and the
studentsaresupposedto reach homeontime.'
o Lakshmibai College: ParmishVerma was to perform on the second day of
the annual cultural festival of Lakshmibai College, Vividha didn't turned
up! Later, apologised to his fans on social networking sites, stating that 'he
was waiting in his hotel, but never received a green signal from the college'
andblamedmismanagementonthepart of College Unionandorganisers.
o Maitreyi College: Parmish Verma's performance in Maitreyi College in
their annual cultural festival started two hours later than the scheduled
time. The crowd is said to be the biggest crowd of the fests season. Due to
excess crowd, certain mismanagement issues were faced, barricades fell off
and the police struggles to control the crowd. After cartain requests 'not to
push',thesinger left theperformanceinbetween!
Whatit takestoplanfortheFest?
The fest is a big event which is organised by the Student's Union in most of
the colleges and several efforts as well as planning need to be put in. While
most of the students in DU enjoy vacations after exams and are busy in
making plans before the new semester begins, the Student's Union, the
team or volunteers of fests works hard to make it 'The Best!'. For them,
that is the only time for Fest Preparations, booking artists, tenders and
searchingforsponsorships.
The âHelp Desk Circusâ in Delhi University
The admission time in Delhi University is back, the times when everything
seemsconfusing,astounding andsometimeshilarious!
The times when you will meet a number of people who will be willing to help
you in every possible way, from open days in north campus to your
respective colleges. You will surely be meeting 10-15 people a day who will
be helping you whole heartedly, from giving you their contact noâs on the
very first day of open days asking you to contact in case you need any help to
strangers hugging and congratulating you on getting admission in the
college and suddenly you start feeling that âOh! This world is so nice to
me!âor simply thinkingaboutthemas âSuchnicepeopletheyare!â
But well, slowly and gradually you will understand the whole circus of the
admission help desk, whether be it people helping you from ABVP, NSUI,
AISA,CYSSoranyotherififorgot to mention.
Every year the admission process is as confusing as it was then. And
ofcourse, all the aspirants require some help or the other. So seek help from
everyone but dont fall into either trap. Here is a list of simple tips to keep in
mindwhileyoutake helpfromeither of theâhelpdesksâ:
⢠Dont trust blindly to whatever they say. Confirm each and every
information from atleast one or two people. By this, I do not mean that they
are willingly misguiding you but they too are students and may have
incompleteinformation.
â˘As you approach or leave from any help desk, make sure you have all your
documents.
⢠DO NOT hand over your original documents to any unknown person, no
matterwhatissue he/sheis claiming tosolve.
⢠Beware of those demanding huge amounts for back-door admissions. DU
doesnâtpermitany suchactions.
⢠Lastly,takehelpfromallbutdonotfallintotrapofany!

throughout your college life beginning from your very first day i.e, THE
