In the 1950s and 1960s, polls were very accurate due to high partisan and class alignment. Accuracy declined in the 1970s-1980s as voting became more volatile. While polls in 1997 and 2001 correctly predicted Labour victories, they misjudged the size of victories. Polls are conducted to gauge public opinion for politicians, media, and the public.
