This document summarizes a study exploring the audience for the National Public Radio podcast of the program "Latino USA". The study found that the podcast audience differs significantly from the typical radio audience for the program. While the radio audience is majority white and over age 45, the podcast audience is majority Hispanic and under age 45. The podcast listeners are geographically dispersed across the US, with clusters in Texas, California, and the Northeast. Most listeners cite convenience as the main reason for accessing the podcast version rather than radio. However, the study notes challenges in accurately measuring podcast audiences based on download numbers alone.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

(the computer or mp3 player).
DEFINITIONS
4. Apple Computers™ introduces the iPod™ in

The other first responses were:
• “Staying Informed” 12 percent;
• “Interest” 11 percent;
• “Quality” 10 percent;
• “Other” 10 percent.
15. RESULTS
RQ4- Do audiences listen to podcast downloads?
• 68 percent listen to between 80 and 100 percent of podcast
downloads
• Mean number of podcasts downloaded weekly was 10.76
• 88 percent were interested in listening to the entire 30 minute

The Question of Audience
If 1835 weekly downloads, but only 118 valid podcast
survey responses, then 6.43 percent response rate.
Begs the question, how many automatic downloads are
actually listened to?
17. DISCUSSION
The Podcast Assimilation Gap

Deployment =

18. CONLUDE
Arbitron-esque “online diaries”
• De-emphasize “downloads” “hits” and “links” as
measure of online-based audiences..
• Arbitron model of media diaries used in radio since the
1930s.
• Online diaries would give a more realistic view of digital
media audience size based on Internet distribution.
