Introduction
Smart Pen (Digital Pen)
A computer invention that transmits writing into digital text.
Using MEMS sensors it records the movement of the writing.
Digital pen technology was first developed by the Swedish inventor
and manufactured by Christer Fåhraues
One of the smart pen is LIVESCRIBE SMARTPEN, invented by
Lyndsey Williams from Cambridge University along with British
Telecommunications in 2008.
3

Digital pens write like a ballpoint and record what
you write as you write it by using Java SDK v1.0.
Digital pens can typically store up to 1,2, or 4
Gigabytes of text/audio.
The digital pen has a rechargeable battery and
standby unto 14Hours.
Development Tools
10
Development Tools(cont.)
Send forms in an instant via mobile phone or PC.
Digital capture forms with pattern can be printed
on demand using compatible desktop printers.
The digital pen and paper solutions implement
the security levels demanded by organizations.
11
Working of Smart Pen
 When using a digital pen, a tiny IR camera in the pen.
 It registers the pen's movement across the grid surface on the paper
and stores it as series of map coordinates.
 These coordinates correspond to the exact location of the page
you’re writing on.
How does it register the coordinates?
User can enter information into these pens by simply pressing a
button and accelerometers are used to sense the movements of the pen
using earths gravity system
12
Working of Smart Pen
There are two techniques used for register the coordinates
 Accelerometer Technology
 Handwriting recognition Software
13
Accelerometer Technology
 This technology uses a device calledAccelerometer which
is used for measuring acceleration due to gravity.
 Atiny accelerometer in a pen could be used to detect the
stops and starts, arcs and loops of handwriting, and transmit
this information to a small microprocessor that would make
sense of it as text.
14
Accelerometer Technology
Two types of accelerometer
1) Three axes accelerometer
(or)
(laser accelerometer)
2) Piezoelectric accelerometer
`
15
Laser Accelerometer
A laser accelerometer comprises a frame having three
orthogonal input axes and multiple proof masses.
Each proof mass having a predetermined blanking surface.
A flexible beam supports each proof mass.
A control responds to the light intensity to restore the proof
mass to a central position and provides an output signal
proportional to the restoring force.
16
Piezoelectric Accelerometer
 It employs the piezoelectric effect of certain materials to
measure dynamic changes in mechanical variables.
e.g., acceleration, vibration, and mechanical shock.
 The acceleration can be converted into an electrical signal it
must first be converted into either a force or displacement.
17
 Application uses Vision Objects Handwriting
Recognition Software which is the world leader in this
field. 26 language handwriting packs are currently
available.
 The text written by hand is converted into digital
characters or digital text.
 Two phases in handwriting recognition
Handwriting transcription
Handwriting recognition
HAND WRITING CHARACTER RECOGNITION (HCR)
18
Handwriting Transcription
In this phase, the recorded acceleration signals are then
transcripted to it's original form of handwriting.
Method
• Firstly, we have to know pen's spatial orientation.
• Secondly, we have to succeed in the double integration
19
Handwriting Recognition
In this phase the characters and signatures are
recognized.
Method
We use a simple Euclidian distance as the comparison process,
and of course the decision the process is the smaller distance
founded by the application sensor
20
Monogram – 1-word could be fire or five
Bigram – 2-word group could be on fire or on five
Trigram – 3-word group could be on fire but never on five
The “Text” resource uses a trigram model.
HAND WRITING TO DIGITAL TEXT CONVERSION
21
Technology Added Value
 Data streaming – email, sms, xml, spreadsheet
 Hand Writing Recognition Software (HWR)
 Advanced Lexicons
 Existing System integration
 Form Editor/Viewer
 Security
 Scanning barcodes
 Data Mining and Business Intelligence
22
Advanced Lexicons
 A lexicon is the vocabulary of a person, things, language, or branch
of knowledge
 Accuracy improved by using lexicons
 Person names
 Place names
 Street names
23
Existing System integration
 By saving information in the local/global systems like
employee names, data or ID numbers.
 Automatic Data verification
 Fieldworker Names
 ID Numbers
24
Form Viewer / Editor Screen
25
Form Viewer / Editor Screen
26
Security
 High security – 128/256 bit encryption.
 Each digital pen has a unique ID.
 Secure web gateway.
 No more missing paperwork - instant transactions.
 Immediate proof of delivery / acceptance.
 Signature verification.
 Regular Backup - ensures reporting and compliance where
necessary.
 Clear audit trail - time stamped log of pen user, time started,
finished and signed.
 No time wasted and impossible for any fraudulent activities to take
place.
27
 The pen must be held in a specific angle when scanning a
barcode
 The barcode must be scanned with normal hand movement
avoiding extremely high or low speeds
BARCODE SCANNING
28
7UTILITIES OF SMARTPEN
Writing
Recording
Speaking
Listen speed
Articulation/pronunciation
Data storing
Dictionary/Vocabulary
29
Benefits
 It is portable and light weight.
 Increased security for the student & the user.
 High speed, resilient solution - Reduced processing time
 Digital secure data, text and images sending.
 Cost cutting in costs related to paper based processes
 Leave a copy behind. Source Paper trail is always available for
validating the electronic information
 Secure data transfer
 Much Smarter than any typing application
30
Disadvantages
 It works only on “Dot Paper”.
 The cost is high.
 Misuse of Smart pen
 Low Storage capacity.
 It has Accelerometer errors
 Errors are occurs in the system due to thermal variations in the spring
31
Demonstration and Live Testing
32
Conclusion
Hence we can conclude that the smart pen has
many advantages over normal pen, since the smart
pen is a device that can store visual recordings and
thus can be used widely.
Eventually blind students (people with partial
blindness) find it difficult to take notes at the fast
pace that is being dictated. So smart pen can play a
great role to help blind students.

  • 3. Introduction Smart Pen (Digital Pen) A computer invention that transmits writing into digital text. Using MEMS sensors it records the movement of the writing. Digital pen technology was first developed by the Swedish inventor and manufactured by Christer Fåhraues One of the smart pen is LIVESCRIBE SMARTPEN, invented by Lyndsey Williams from Cambridge University along with British Telecommunications in 2008. 3
  • 4. Endorsements From Researchers  I think this smart pen is going to revolutionize learning.  It facilitate the Curriculum Based Measures like recording and tracking of children’s performances on quick assessments.  In mathematics that’s central to learning.  It has tremendous potential to help students as they pursue their higher education — certainly all forms of education. 4
  • 5. The Platform  Digital Pen  Dot Paper with Dot Positioning System (DPS)  Desktop and Host Server (pen cast)  Development Tools 5

  • 10. Digital pens write like a ballpoint and record what you write as you write it by using Java SDK v1.0. Digital pens can typically store up to 1,2, or 4 Gigabytes of text/audio. The digital pen has a rechargeable battery and standby unto 14Hours. Development Tools 10
  • 11. Development Tools(cont.) Send forms in an instant via mobile phone or PC. Digital capture forms with pattern can be printed on demand using compatible desktop printers. The digital pen and paper solutions implement the security levels demanded by organizations. 11
  • 12. Working of Smart Pen  When using a digital pen, a tiny IR camera in the pen.  It registers the pen's movement across the grid surface on the paper and stores it as series of map coordinates.  These coordinates correspond to the exact location of the page you’re writing on. How does it register the coordinates? User can enter information into these pens by simply pressing a button and accelerometers are used to sense the movements of the pen using earths gravity system 12
  • 13. Working of Smart Pen There are two techniques used for register the coordinates  Accelerometer Technology  Handwriting recognition Software 13
  • 14. Accelerometer Technology  This technology uses a device calledAccelerometer which is used for measuring acceleration due to gravity.  Atiny accelerometer in a pen could be used to detect the stops and starts, arcs and loops of handwriting, and transmit this information to a small microprocessor that would make sense of it as text. 14
  • 15. Accelerometer Technology Two types of accelerometer 1) Three axes accelerometer (or) (laser accelerometer) 2) Piezoelectric accelerometer ` 15
  • 16. Laser Accelerometer A laser accelerometer comprises a frame having three orthogonal input axes and multiple proof masses. Each proof mass having a predetermined blanking surface. A flexible beam supports each proof mass. A control responds to the light intensity to restore the proof mass to a central position and provides an output signal proportional to the restoring force. 16
  • 17. Piezoelectric Accelerometer  It employs the piezoelectric effect of certain materials to measure dynamic changes in mechanical variables. e.g., acceleration, vibration, and mechanical shock.  The acceleration can be converted into an electrical signal it must first be converted into either a force or displacement. 17
  • 18.  Application uses Vision Objects Handwriting Recognition Software which is the world leader in this field. 26 language handwriting packs are currently available.  The text written by hand is converted into digital characters or digital text.  Two phases in handwriting recognition Handwriting transcription Handwriting recognition HAND WRITING CHARACTER RECOGNITION (HCR) 18
  • 19. Handwriting Transcription In this phase, the recorded acceleration signals are then transcripted to it's original form of handwriting. Method • Firstly, we have to know pen's spatial orientation. • Secondly, we have to succeed in the double integration 19
  • 20. Handwriting Recognition In this phase the characters and signatures are recognized. Method We use a simple Euclidian distance as the comparison process, and of course the decision the process is the smaller distance founded by the application sensor 20
  • 21. Monogram – 1-word could be fire or five Bigram – 2-word group could be on fire or on five Trigram – 3-word group could be on fire but never on five The “Text” resource uses a trigram model. HAND WRITING TO DIGITAL TEXT CONVERSION 21
  • 22. Technology Added Value  Data streaming – email, sms, xml, spreadsheet  Hand Writing Recognition Software (HWR)  Advanced Lexicons  Existing System integration  Form Editor/Viewer  Security  Scanning barcodes  Data Mining and Business Intelligence 22
  • 23. Advanced Lexicons  A lexicon is the vocabulary of a person, things, language, or branch of knowledge  Accuracy improved by using lexicons  Person names  Place names  Street names 23
  • 24. Existing System integration  By saving information in the local/global systems like employee names, data or ID numbers.  Automatic Data verification  Fieldworker Names  ID Numbers 24
  • 25. Form Viewer / Editor Screen 25
  • 26. Form Viewer / Editor Screen 26
  • 27. Security  High security – 128/256 bit encryption.  Each digital pen has a unique ID.  Secure web gateway.  No more missing paperwork - instant transactions.  Immediate proof of delivery / acceptance.  Signature verification.  Regular Backup - ensures reporting and compliance where necessary.  Clear audit trail - time stamped log of pen user, time started, finished and signed.  No time wasted and impossible for any fraudulent activities to take place. 27
  • 28.  The pen must be held in a specific angle when scanning a barcode  The barcode must be scanned with normal hand movement avoiding extremely high or low speeds BARCODE SCANNING 28
  • 29. 7UTILITIES OF SMARTPEN Writing Recording Speaking Listen speed Articulation/pronunciation Data storing Dictionary/Vocabulary 29
  • 30. Benefits  It is portable and light weight.  Increased security for the student & the user.  High speed, resilient solution - Reduced processing time  Digital secure data, text and images sending.  Cost cutting in costs related to paper based processes  Leave a copy behind. Source Paper trail is always available for validating the electronic information  Secure data transfer  Much Smarter than any typing application 30
  • 31. Disadvantages  It works only on “Dot Paper”.  The cost is high.  Misuse of Smart pen  Low Storage capacity.  It has Accelerometer errors  Errors are occurs in the system due to thermal variations in the spring 31
  • 33. Conclusion Hence we can conclude that the smart pen has many advantages over normal pen, since the smart pen is a device that can store visual recordings and thus can be used widely. Eventually blind students (people with partial blindness) find it difficult to take notes at the fast pace that is being dictated. So smart pen can play a great role to help blind students. 33
