 The term data logging refers to collecting or gathering data
over period of time.
 A data logger is a device used to store and retrieve data.
 Data loggers capture, measure and analyze physical
phenomena from the real world.
 Light, temperature and pressure are examples of the different
types of signal that data logger can measure.

 It uses built in instrument or sensor or via external
instruments and sensors to collect data.
 A data logger is often a hand held battery powered, portable,
and equipped with a microprocessor, internal memory for
data storage, and sensors.

7. How data is collected
 Data logging is done to collect information of physical
quantities like temperature, humidity,Co2 Level etc. in order
to do this we need a low cost portable data logger.
 Sensors are used to take readings or measurements at
regular interval of their environment.
 Sensors may be analog or digital. If they take analog reading,
a analog to digital converter will be needed to convert the
signal into digital data which a computer can understand.

wireless link to the data logger.
 The device is designed to receive data from sensors and to
store the results on external memory for post process
analysis.
 LCD is also used for real time display of data acquired from
various sensors.

 Transducer or Sensor : A device that converts a physical
phenomenon such as light temperature,pressure or sound
into a measurable electric signal such as voltage or current.
 Analog to Digital Converter: The data loggers senses only
digital signals and hence analog signals are converted in
digital signals.
 Microcontroller and Storage: Microcontroller is used to
convert digital signals into binary form,storage used to store

the converted digital signal.
 Display : Some data loggers interface with a personal
computer, and use software to activate the data logger and
view and analyze the collected data, while others have a
local interface device like LCD and can be used as a stand-
alone device.

 Stand Alone : Stand alone hardware can continuously
measure and log data without connection to a PC
 PC Based: Operation requires full time connection to a
PC over any appropriate technology.

17. How long can data loggers record?
 The recording duration depends on the memory capacity of
the data logger and the desired sample rate.
 To determine the duration, divide the memory capacity
(number of samples the device can record) by the sample
rate. As an example, assume that a given data logger can
store 10,000 samples. If you want to record two samples
every minute, the data logger can run for 10,000/2 or 5,000
minutes (about 3.5 days).

18. How to retrieve data off your data
logger
 Depending on the type of data logger, you can either access
the data directly within the data logger and even print it out,
connect the data logger to a computer to extract the data, or
data can be wirelessly transmitted in real-time to any
connected device.
 Data loggers can collect data independently of a computer.
Data is normally collected in non-volatile memory for later
download to a computer. The computer does not need to be
present during the data collection process. This makes them
ideally suited for applications requiring portability.

 If you merely want to log data, you do not need a data logger
with a display. However, if you want to be able to see the
temperature, you will need a data logger with a display.
 How you gain access to logged data is another important
consideration. To access and download data from the data
logger there are four options.

cost and easy setup and deployment.
 It is plugged directly into a USB port on a PC for configuration and data
downloading.

and transmit data wirelessly to mobile devices over a 100-
foot range.
 It is used in limited access areas.

 It is remote, around-the-clock, internet-based access to data
via cellular, WI-FI, or Ethernet communications.(a wired
option that would allow you to directly connect your computer
to a data logger. However, running an Ethernet cable can be
costly or time-consuming versus other options.)

 It transmits real-time data from dozens of points to a central
computer or gateway.
 It reduces manual retrievation of data.

 You can extract the SD card without taking the data logger
with you.

25. Data logging versus data acquisition
 A data logger is a data acquisition system, but a data acquisition
system is not necessarily a data logger.
 Data loggers typically have slower sample rates. A maximum
sample rate of 1 Hz may be considered to be very fast for a data
logger, yet very slow for a typical data acquisition system.
 Data loggers are implicitly stand-alone devices, while typical data
acquisition system must remain tethered to a computer to acquire
data.

 Data logger has longer recording time as compare to DAQ system.
 Data loggers are usually battery powered and DAQ system are
externally AC/DC Powered.
 Data loggers are of low cost as compare to DAQ system.
 Data loggers input are very few core type and DAQ systems has
broad range of inputs.
 Data loggers used magnetic tape, punched paper tape, directly
viewable recorder such as strip chart recorder and DAQ used static
RAM, flash Memory , EEPROM.

 It is used in weather stations to record wind speed, rainfall, temperature,
relative humidity, radiation, Air Quality Index (AQI) etc.
 It is used for hydrographic recording to record water level, depth, flow, pH,
conductivity etc.
 It is used in wildlife and forest monitoring to record number and activities of
animals to prevent them from poaching.
 It is used in scientific, research, experimental works like to record growth of
plants, time for isotropic changes, interaction of chemicals etc. It is used in
various industries to monitor the risk zone, to test leakage and fitting like in
nuclear power plants.

monitoring, tunnel monitoring, deformities in dam, road and bridge etc.
 Monitor vaccine storage in a medical facility.
 Monitor the temperature of food
 To record gas pressure and to monitor tank levels.

 Nowadays, it is required to control the temperature, pressure,
humidity, displacement, etc. in a plant, hence demand of data
logger is increasing rapidly since it finds a wide application in
industries.
 The cost of data loggers has been declining over the years as
technology improves and costs are reduced.
 Simple single channel data loggers cost as little as $25. More
complicated loggers may costs hundreds or thousands of dollars.

31. Future Aspects
 Data Loggers are changing more
rapidly now than ever before.
 The original model of a stand alone
data logger is changing to one of a
device that collects data but also has
access to wireless communications
for alarming of events, automatic
reporting of data and remote control.

 Readings can be continually taken over long periods,24 hours a day, 365 days
of the year.
 There is no chance of somebody forgetting to take a reading
 Readings will be more accurate if a computer takes them because there is no
chance of human error
 Sensors can be placed in locations where it is dangerous for humans to go
 Time intervals for collecting data can be very frequent and regular, for example,
hundreds of measurements per second.
 Data logging is often more accurate because there is no likelihood of human
error.

33. Disadvantages
 If the data logging equipment breaks down or malfunctions,
some data could be lost or not recorded.
 Equipment can be expensive for small tasks.
 The equipment will only take readings at the logging interval
which has been set up. If something unexpected happens
between recordings, the data will not be collected.
 Data loggers typically have slower sample rates than Data
Acquisition System.

 Abstract: This paper aims to develop a low cost, many channel data logging
system which can store data for future use. ESP32 microcontroller is used to
make advancement in this system. This system sends the stored data to the
addressed mail through Wi-Fi Through this device we can log any physical or
environmental parameters for the particular period of time. In the old version, the
data logger is physically connected to the computer. The system proposed in this
