4. The SAMR Ladder
Level of SMAR Model Questions to consider to help you get to new levels
Substitution
• What does your task look like without being transformed at all –
o What is the basic task?
o What tech replaces the old tech?
Augmentation
• Have I added an improvement to the task process that could not be
accomplished with the older technology?
• How does this feature contribute to my design?
Modification
• How is the original task being modified?
• Does this modification fundamentally depend upon the new
technology?
• How does this modification contribute to my design?
Redefinition
• What is the new task?
• Will any portion of the original task be retained?
• How is the new task uniquely made possible by the new technology?
• How does it contribute to my design?
6. TPACK Planning
Step 1. Determine the Context. (ss, class size, learning style, culture impact etc.)
Step 2. Determine the Content. (sequence, chunking, misconceptions, connection to prior knowledge etc.)
Step 3. Determine the Pedagogical Strategy. (what worked/what didn’t? how do ss learn best?)
Step 4. Reflect on the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK):
• How does pairing this pedagogical strategy with this piece of content make the learning more accessible and engaging to
your students?
Step 5. Determine the Appropriate Technology.
• What are the affordances of this technology? (What are the benefits?)
• What are the constraints of this technology? (What are the limitations?)
Step 6. Reflect on the Technological Content Knowledge (TCK): How do they make learning more accessible and engaging?
Step 7. Reflect on the Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK): How do they make learning more accessible and
engaging?
Step 8. How does this learning design hit the “Sweet Spot”?

Steps for planning a blended course
Use the following guide after completing alignment with program and course level objectives and learning outcomes.
8. Exercise
Work in groups of 2, pick 1-2 learning activities/assessment that you’ve
written and re-design it using the SAMR and TPACK model.
• Use Canvas, H5P or any other technologies
• Determine the context, content, pedagogy and technology using
TPACK
• Determine the SAMR level
