The Nigerian poultry industry has significant growth potential but faces constraints including low productivity on small household farms. Newcastle disease significantly reduces output. MADE is working to address constraints in the rural poultry sector through partnerships to increase farmers' access to vaccines, inputs and training. Interventions include working with companies to develop rural distribution channels for vaccines and inputs, training farmers in best practices, and introducing improved breeds suited to small farms. Over 23,000 farmers have benefited, improving productivity and incomes in the rural poultry value chain.

1. The Nigerian poultry industry is a substan al
market es mated at 80 billion naira per year.
Domes c demand for chicken grows annually as
has the popularity of poultry produc on. This can
be a ributed to rela vely low produc on costs,
significant return on investment and the short
produc on cycle. Despite the opportunity, there is
a domes c produc on shor all – es mated at
25,000 MT per annum. This is due to inefficient
produc on methods as many farmers raise low
yielding birds on small scale household farms, use
poor veterinary protocols, tradi onal produc on
and management techniques and many are
constrained by poor market access.
Another significant constraint is

Interven on
Market Development in the Niger Delta (MADE),
a DFID funded programme being implemented
by Development Alterna ves Incorporated (DAI).
MADE is a rural and agricultural market systems
development programme using the Making
Markets Work for the Poor approach (M4P) to
design systemic and sustainable interven ons
that generate propoor and inclusive growth in
nine Niger Delta states: Abia, Akwa Ibom,
Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and
Rivers.
The goal is to facilitate increases in incomes for
at least 150,000 poor people, of whom 50%
must be women.
The programme design is based on the
recogni on that poverty is the result of the
structure of market systems in which the poor
par cipate and that when markets work
efficiently and produce equitable outcomes for
the poor, such markets become powerful
vehicles for delivering growth and poverty
reduc on. MADE is currently implemen ng
interven ons in agricultural inputs, finished
leather goods, cassava, fisheries, palm oil and
small-scale poultry value chains.

many diseases can be avoided with vaccina ons,
the vaccine distribu on system is currently
modeled around the opera ons of large
commercial farms, and does not extend to small
farms in rural areas. The Interna onal Livestock
Research Ins tute computed lost output from
NDV to be over 5.4 million poultry, and 9.6
million eggs. Other causes of low produc vity
include farmers' inadequate knowledge of good
poultry keeping prac ces, inadequate use of
inputs (drugs, vitamins, supplements) and
breeding of low yielding birds.
To address the key constraints in the rural
poultry sector MADE is implemen ng the
following interven ons:

Ini a ve
A er an ini al pilot with AgriProject Concept,
implemented in Imo State, was closed out in
February
2015, lessons learnt informed a redesign to be
implemented in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta,
Edo, Ondo and Rivers States.
The new interven on approach is based on
partnerships with public and private sector
actors: Poultry Pharmaceu cals, Input
companies and the Na onal Veterinary Research
Ins tute. MADE iden fied two Veterinary
Pharmaceu cal Companies, Turner Wright and
Zygosis, as partners to develop a distribu on
channel reaching rural poultry farmers with good
poultry prac ce training, management training,
and establishing distribu on networks for
vaccines and feed. To buy-down the risk of
developing a rural distribu on channel, MADE
provided co-share grants to Zygosis and Turner
Wright who adapted the model to suit
opera onal reali es: Zygosis crea ng a pool of
entrepreneurs to sell vaccina on services and
poultry products to households, while Turner
Wright employed vaccinators to provide services
to small-scale farmers. The target beneficiaries
are rural poultry farmers with a flock size of 400
and below. Vaccinators train village level dealers
who break bulk on vaccines and sell to farmers
per dose.
Improving produc vity of rural poultry
farmers through educa on and enterprise
development training
To improve produc vity in the value chain, there
is a need to improve the business management
skills of small scale poultry farmers. The Nigeria
Agricultural Enterprise Curriculum (NAEC) is
designed to help farmers gain planning,

3. birds are a cross breed of tradi onal species and broilers,
offering benefits such as: low fat, good brooders, tas ness
and hardiness. This ini a ve could boost chicken
produc on among poor women in the region as the bird
can be reared free range, keeping produc on costs low
and suitable for rural poultry farmers. The Noiler has low
mortality and is resistant to many diseases. MADE is
presently working with co-facilitators to develop the
distribu on channels and create awareness of the
improved breeds amongst micro and small-scale farmers.

Scarcity of maize and soybeans has resulted in higher
costs of feeds which could impact farmer behavior.
As at June 2017, the Small-Scale Poultry Interven on has
worked with 78 vaccinators provided poultry inputs and
vaccina on services for over 23,000 poultry farmers and
46% of them are women farmers. Through the
partnerships with key market actors the small-scale
poultry interven on has facilitated viable distribu on
channels and s mulated demand for improved breeds,
poultry inputs and trainings. Micro and small-scale
poultry keepers see reduced losses related to diseases
and the net result is increased produc vity, enhanced
compe veness and increased incomes among rural
poultry farmers.

the growth of farms. The training increases
farmers capacity to employ a commercial
approach to poultry farm ac vi es, as opposed
to subsistence prac ces. It is also intended to
encourage the development of homestead
poultry farming ac vi es among poor
households looking to diversify their income
sources. MADE has trained 30 poultry trainers
currently being supported to deliver NAEC
trainings in a pro-poor manner. As awareness
about the benefits of NAEC for poultry accruing
from the trainings, farmers are equipped skills to
move from subsistence farming to growing and
managing more profitable farms.
In addi on, the programme facilitated the
emergence of a farmers' forum: mee ngs during
which, Veterinary pharmaceu cal companies
sensi ze farmers on the use of inputs. Using the
Nigerian Agricultural Enterprise Curriculum
designed for livestock, MADE has adapted a
curriculum for poultry and trained a group of
NAEC trainers who are currently running their

Improved Breeds Ini a ve
In November 2016, a new ini a ve was
introduced focused on introducing a hybrid into
the market. The ini a ve is designed to increase
