1. Sub sector: Poultry
1. Situation:
Livestock and poultry rearing practices in coastal areas of Barisal region are mostly scavenging or semi-
scavenging type. Most of the households rears indigenous or local breed of livestock and poultry except
a few in case of beef fattening IGA. Though for smallholder’s goat rearing is a profitable business, it is
therefore better to introduce closed or semi scavenging rearing practices to avoid social problems.
Seasonality is a major concern in rearing livestock and poultry in the coastal region. They can’t rear
livestock and poultry all the year round due to seasonal flood, natural calamity and tidal surge, thus
prefer summer season.
Most of the reares having poor/no idea about any improved breed of poultry or livestock. It was
envisaged that government and NGO level intervention towards poultry and livestock breed
improvement is almost absent among the respondents rearers category.
In the coastal region disease is one of the major causes for looses of live stock and poultry. Treatment
and vaccination services are very poor in the area. A certain percent of rearers moderately
maintain/avail vaccination or medication facilities locally. Overall rearer are demanded for ensured
treatment and vaccination services at their periphery, financial services and rearing training related
activities. Still farmers to farmers/ rearers to rearers experience exchange are dominating source of
information. Other sources are rural market, inputs retailers. Some advance level rearers those who
inhabited nearly upazila, gained knowledge from upazila level government institution like upazila
veterinary hospital.
Beef fattening now a days a popular seasonal business (addressing Eid-ul-Azha festival of muslim
communities each year) among the surveyed respondents which generates profits within a shortest
time. They marketed their produces in rural hat (rural assembly market), at homestead, at nearby
regular market and at upazila market. A significant number of rearer maintain informal market channel
with faria or intermediaries who collects produces from rearer’s homestead due to remote area and
communication problem with nearby markets.
It was observed that there is a overfull demand of livestock and poultry produces in the locality while
other mentioned that they produces or rear based on seasonal preference. Less productivity of poultry
birds and livestock, remote area and thus poor communication and knowledge gap on marketing of
produces to a high value markets were identified as major marketing related constraints. Constraints
associated with livestock and poultry rearing and processing activities has been identified as lack of high
yielding breed, unaware about technology, lack of transport and market, finance, medication, high
mortality rate etc. The poor livestock and poultry rearers in Barisal region in many cases sell their
produces in an imperfect market (neighbor, faria, broker).
2. Objectives for working in the sub sector:
• Increase homestead based poultry production and
• farmer’ income
3. What has been done and impact so far:
2. The RRD team understands the opportunities from specific areas and facilitated paravet services,
vaccination and feed supply chain. The team tests some opportunities with Noverties and vaccinator
developed by RFLDC and found positive response. Following activities was conducted during the last
project period that improves farmers understating to participate in the RED activities. These are

Decrease bird mortality, use
sonali breed
• Improve production technology of scavenging poultry with improve breed and local (deshi) bird.
• Strengthening or develop vaccination services and link the producer
4. Future strategy for reaching the target beneficiaries (High importance)
The target is as follows:
Farmer Upazila Crops Yield Cost
1350 Noakhali: Suborna char,
Companygonj, Hatia
Bhola: Bhola sadar, Doulatkahn,
Borhanuddin, Lalmohon
Barisal: Muladi and Hizla
Patuakhali: Kolapara, Golachipa,
Baufal, Dosmina
Local and Sonali birds.
Egg and meat production
and marketing through
Increase
production of
egg and birds
Reduce
mortality of
the birds
It is expected that each rearers will have 10-15 birds in homestead and through the interventions the
additional income will Tk. 2,700,000 (either meat purpose of egg purpose each farmer will earn Tk 2000
per year), decreased mortality.
Specific activities to support the strategies:
• Select specific locations those are potential for poultry production
• Provide direct assistance to the poultry producers (training, linkages, demonstrations, market
visit)
• Linking rearers with existing service providers (paravet, vaccinator, feed and medicine company
and retailers),
• Demonstrate the best farmer performance as model to other rearers
• Facilitate group marketing for aggregation of egg.
5. Scale up strategy (secondary importance)
Develop DOC seller and link them with rearers
Linking rearers with paravet and vaccinator for access to and sustainability of the services
Link with DLS and RFLDC
3. 6. Constraints matrix:
Areas Constraints Interventions
Input market • Farmers lack access to vaccination and
paravet services
• Lack access to better quality feed
• Farmers lack access to credit
• Access to vaccination and primary
treatment of the poultry
• Access to quality feed
• Access to credit for poultry rearers and
input seller
Farm
production
• Farmers don’t have the
comprehensive knowledge about
commercialization of poultry rearing
and beef fattening
• Improve technical knowledge on
poultry rearing and beef fattening
Output market • Individually selling of egg and birds
lower the market price.
Group marketing for egg
Main Intervention areas are introduced improve breed- sonali, high inputs (feed) high return, deshi chicken
production technology (supplementary feed and separation of mother from chick in early stages)
