Ska is a Jamaican music genre that originated in the late 1950s and was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues, characterized by a walking bass line with rhythms on the upbeat. Some original 1950s ska artists included The Blues Busters, Desmond Dekker, and Justin Hinds. Ska saw a revival in the late 1970s with 2 Tone artists such as The Selecter, The Specials, and Madness. A third wave of ska emerged in the early 1980s including bands like No Doubt, Sublime, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
