Site Safety Induction 9
TRAINING
• All Site Workers shall attend a Site Safety
Induction to work on site.
• Certificates of Competence are required for
specialist skills e.g. crane operators & welders.
• Toolbox Talks will be given on a daily or Job
Task basis by the Contractor(s) Supervisor(s).
• Skill training is required for some tasks e.g.
Confined space work, Roof work, Machine
operators.
• SSM will monitor Contractors Records of
Training and Competence Assessments.

ACCESS - WORK
• A Site Photo Pass & a Hard Hat Safety Sticker
will be issued after this Induction Training has been
completed.
• Any person on Site that has not attended a Site Safety
Induction shall be accompanied at all times by an
inducted person.
• Passes must be carried at all times on Site and
produced when requested, by any member of the
Client’s or SSM staff or other Management as proof of
identity.

SITE ACCESS - WORK
• Persons who have forgotten or lost their Site
Pass may be given a temporary pass at
Security on proof of identity.
Note: there may be a delay in obtaining a Temporary
Pass as Security will deal with normal Site entries as
a priority.
• Contractors shall provide SSM with an
updated list of their personnel whenever there
are changes.

SITE ACCESS-VEHICLES
• All Site approved vehicles shall display a Site
Vehicle Pass at all times.
• All materials, equipment, tools etc. including
waste may be hauled away only with approval
from Siemens Site Management.
• All persons & vehicles are subject to search
by Site Security authorized by Site
Management.

SITE ACCESS - VISITORS
• Notice of all visitors to the Site must be given
to SSM prior to arrival.
• Site visitors must use the contractor’s car
park, unless permission is obtained from SSM
to bring their vehicles on to the Site.
• Visitors shall be met at the Gatehouse by a
representative of the company they are
visiting and they must be accompanied at all
times whilst on Site.

GENERAL TRAFFIC RULES
• Site Speed Limit is 10 km/h.
• Site construction vehicles must have flashing
lights and reversing alarms.
• All vehicles must give way to pedestrians and
comply with traffic signs.
• Motorcycles are not permitted on Site.
• Smoking is not permitted in any vehicle on
Site.
• Road access shall not be obstructed by
parked vehicles, trucks, cranes and
machinery.

RADIO/MOBILE PHONE
COMMUNICATIONS
• Only persons issued with a Permit from Site
Management are permitted to carry/use
mobile phones in the Site Construction Area.
• Hand held radios without a Permit shall not be
used on Site. Permits subject to appropriate
Laws & Regulations.
• Radio frequency allocation to be approved by
Site Management.
• Radios & Mobile Phones shall not be used in
designated Restricted Areas on Site
e.g. Natural Gas facility.

EMERGENCYALARM
• THE ALARM: for Site Evacuation is an XXXXXX .
• ASSEMBLY AREAS: - All persons and contractors
shall muster at their designated assembly areas.
• Site Alarm test on XXXXXX at XXXX hrs.
• System alarm tests shall be notified as required e.g.
installed fire alarms.
• The Site Alarm may also be used for other purposes
e.g. blasting operations. Site Instructions will advise.

FIRE EMERGENCY
RAISE THE ALARM (Site Emergency Procedure)
a. Inform others in the area.
b. Notify Siemens Site Safety/Security.
c. Attempt to put out fire with a portable fire
extinguisher only if it is safe to do so &
you have been trained.
d. Evacuate the area.
e. Do not use the elevators.
f. Report to your nominated assembly area.

INCIDENT/ACCIDENT PROCEDURE
RAISE THE ALARM (Site Emergency Procedure)
• Do not attempt to remove seriously injured casualties
from the area unless they are in immediate danger.
• Do not attempt to treat an injured person unless you
are qualified (First Aid Certificate).
• Do not disturb the scene of a serious incident /
accident until permission is obtained from the
Authorities & SSM.

INCIDENT / ACCIDENT REPORTING
• Report all Incidents & Accidents to your supervisor
immediately.
• An Incident / Accident Report is to be raised to:
a. Record
b. Report
c. Investigate the event as legally required
NOTE: SIEMENS INCIDENT/ACCIDENT REPORT FORM SHALL BE USED
ON SITE. CONTRACTORS SHALL REPORT TO AUTHORITIES ON
APPROVED REPORT FORM.
• Contractors shall advise SSM & the AUTHORITIES as
required for all Serious Harm Accidents and Incidents
that may have caused Serious Harm (Dangerous
Occurrence).

FIRST AID FACILITY
• Siemens Site Nurse is on site XXXX-XXXX
Monday to Friday at the Medical Centre
beside the Gatehouse.
• After XXXX and at weekends the key for the
medical centre is located at Security.
• All contractors shall provide their own first
aid cover and supplies.
• Contractors shall provide SSM with a list of
qualified first-aid staff.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Hi-Viz Vest/Jacket Safety Helmet
• Safety Footwear
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• PPE as required for hazards e.g.
a. EYE protection )
b. RESPIRATORYprotection ) Training required
c. HEARING protection ) in safe use e.g.
d. ANTI-FALL protection ) Safety Harness.
Note: failure to use PPE is a disciplinary offence

NOISE
• Noise levels > 85 dBA may damage your hearing.
• Ear protection (plugs or muffs) must be worn when
working in areas where noise levels exceed 85 dBA.
• Peak readings up to 140 dBA of short duration can
also damage hearing.
• Some typical noise levels:
1. Powder actuated gun: 107- 110 dBA (Ear PPE 0 mins)
2. Cut-off saw: 89- 102 dBA ( “ “ 8 mins)
3. Bench Grinder: 92- 96 dBA ( “ “ 30 mins)
4. Steam Blow: 85- 103 dBA ( “ “ 25 mins)
• Only approved Ear Protection shall be used.
• Remember hearing loss is for…EVER.

WORK PERMITS
• A Permit to Work(PTW) for all work on Energised
Systems.
• Other work permits are also used on Site:
1. Permit to Dig: (Personnel/Excavations)
2. Hot Work Permit: (Personnel/Fire)
3. Confined Space Permit: (Personnel/Entrapment)
4. Radiography Permit: (Personnel/Radiation)
5. Overhead Crane Permit: (Personnel/Maintenance)
6. Road Closure Permit: (EmergencyAccess)
• Work Permits are for all work with the potential to
cause an accident e.g. contact with underground
cables.

EXCAVATIONS
• Contractor must have a PERMIT TO DIG before
any excavation is undertaken on Site.
• If an excavation is more than 2m deep
substantial barriers must be provided.
• Sides must be prevented from collapsing.
• Safe access and egress must be provided.
• Excavations shall be inspected daily.

EXCAVATIONS
• Edge protection for vehicles shall be in place
on traffic routes.
• Loads & vehicles should not be placed near
edge of excavation (min 0.6m).
• Confined Space Procedures may apply.
• All open holes & pits must be fenced or
covered and warning signs displayed.
• Water removal equipment shall be provided &
monitored by a competent person.

WORKING AT HEIGHT
SCAFFOLDS
• Competent persons only shall erect, alter or dismantle
any scaffold structure.
• Shall be erected on a stable surface, must be tagged
and inspected weekly, & the inspection must be
recorded.
• Do not stockpile materials & equipment on platforms.
• Do not work on scaffolds during high winds & storms.
• Protect scaffolds from being struck by vehicles or
crane operations.
• Maintain scaffold area and platforms; clear debris, and
remove excess materials & equipment.

WORKING AT HEIGHT
MOBILE ELEVATED WORK PLATFORMS
• Operators must be trained, certified and
competent to use MEWP´s.
• Barricades and Signs must be used to
indicate overhead work and exclusion area.
• Equipment must be inspected, maintained
and certified.
• Operated only on level & stable ground.
• Never move in elevated position.
• DANGER beware of HV systems, cables etc.

WORKING AT HEIGHT
LADDERS
• Ensure that the use of a ladder is the safest means of
access.
• Ensure stability (1:4 Ratio wall to height).
• Use correct ladder for work e.g. electrical safety.
• Workers shall be trained in correct use.
• Ladders must extend 1m above step off point.
SAFETY HARNESS
• Safety harness shall only be used when other fall
arrest systems are not practical.
• Full one-piece body harness shall be used with
appropriate lanyard assemblies.

OVERHEAD WORK
• Barricades and Warning Signs shall be
erected to indicate overhead work.
• Never cross restricted area.
• All tools and materials shall be secured.
• Install protection nets & covered walkways.
• Be aware of people working below.

MOBILE CRANES & LIFTING
EQUIPMENT
• All cranes & lifting equipment shall be inspected prior
to Site Access.
• All cranes must comply with current Safety
Regulations.
• Mandatory safety devices must be operational
e.g. 1. Radius or angle Indicator
2. Boom Length Indicator
3. Anti Two-Block Warning Device
4. Automatic SLI or SLI or LMI
• Registers shall be maintained by Contractors for all
lifting equipment e.g. slings, beams, shackles etc.

LIFTING OPERATIONS
• Certified operators only can operate cranes or use
lifting apparatus. Lifting equipment shall be
certified and registers shall be maintained.
• Certified Banksman shall direct lifts. They must be
clearly identified e.g. Hi Viz vest.
• Barricaded Exclusion Zone with Signs must be in
place around lifting areas. Safetyman should be
used to keep others out of zone.
• All personnel involved in the lift shall be briefed and
comply with lifting procedures (Method Statement).

WORKING WITH HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS
• Workers must read & understand instructions on the
MSDS & the container before using any hazardous
materials.
Note: MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet)
• Do not use hazardous materials unless you have been
given the correct information, instruction and training
in their use.
• Correct PPE for hazard(s) shall be used.
• MSDS contains First Aid & Fire Fighting measures &
handling, storage, transport & disposal information.

WORKING WITH HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS
• Never place chemicals in unlabelled containers
e.g. paint thinners in a water bottle.
• Combustible materials shall be stored safely and
away from sources of ignition.
• Do not store hazardous materials in walkways,
stairways or points of access & egress.
• Flammable liquids, gases and foams shall be stored
in fire resistant storage away from the workplace.
• All gas cylinders shall be used and stored in
compliance with Safety Regulations.
e.g. Oxygen shall be stored 6m from flammable gasses.

HOT WORK
• All work involving welding, cutting, use of a naked
flame etc. requires a Hot Work Permit.
Note: drilling & grinding work requires a Hot Work Permit
whenever a possible flammable atmosphere may exist.
• Purpose of the Hot Work Permit is protect others and
for fire prevention - e.g. fire extinguishers, fire
blankets, flash/spark screens and removal of
combustibles.
• Correct PPE must be used for all grinding, welding
and cutting operations.
• Fire watch check must be made before leaving an area
after hot work.

CONFINED SPACE
• A Confined Space Permit is required for work in any
space with restricted entry or exit and is not
designed for continuous occupancy.
Note: Entry/Exit Register shall be at point of entry
• Major Hazards:
1. Oxygen deficiency (<19.5%) & enrichment (>23.5%)
2. Fires & explosion
3. Toxic atmosphere
4. Physical hazards.
• Qualified personnel ONLY are allowed to work in a
Confined Space.
• Hazards must be removed through preventative
measures.
e.g. forced air ventilation, low voltage equipment.

ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
• All trailing leads and cables shall be safely
suspended or fully protected.
• Remove and replace damaged cables and
connections.
• Electrical equipment shall be properly
constructed, installed and maintained.
• Competent electricians only may inspect, test
& repair equipment.
• Earth leakage circuit breakers (RCDs) or
Isolating Transformers shall be used at all
times.

PORTABLE ELECTRIC TOOLS
• 110 VOLT equipment shall be used on Site.
• Approved equipment only shall be used in
Confined Spaces e.g. 25 volt hand lights.
• Daily User Checks shall be carried out to
ensure safe operating condition.
• All tools shall be tested, tagged & recorded.
• Compliance with Electrical Regulations is
mandatory.

WORK PLACE LIGHTING
• Adequate lighting shall be provided at the
work place (Contractors responsibility).
• Caution, halogen lights operate at high
temperatures and can cause fires, when
knocked over or burns if contacted.
• Temporary lighting must comply with
Electrical Standards & Regulations.

RADIOGRAPHY
• SSM approval is required for all Radiography
on Site.
• Notification will be posted on the Radiography
Notice Board at the Site entrance.
• Barriers, Warning Signs and Flashing lights
will designate the boundary. The Radiation
Protection Officer must control the Restricted
Area.

COMPRESSED AIR EQUIPMENT
• Coupler connections shall be secured in the approved
manner.
• Tools & equipment shall be maintained in a safe
condition.
• Check for leaking/damaged hoses, approved hose
connections only shall be used.
• Never use compressed air for cleaning down clothing
or aim the hand device at another person.
• Max pressure when cleaning with compressed air is
30 p.s.i (2 bar).
• Correct PPE shall be used at all times.

SITE WELFARE FACILITIES
• Contractors shall provide approved accommodation
including Canteen, Washing Facilities, Toilets and
Changing Rooms for their employees.
• Contractors shall ensure that the above are
maintained in compliance with Safety, Health &
Hygiene Regulations.
• Site Management reserves the right to maintain such
facilities at the Contractor´s cost.
• Fouling of Site facilities or the Site area is forbidden.
• Site drinking water points shall be clearly marked as
.
DRINKING WATER

CANTEEN FACILITIES
• Siemens Canteen is open in the morning at
XX.XX – XX.XX a.m. for take away breakfasts,
sandwiches etc.
• Lunchtime opening is at XX.XX – XX.XX p.m.
for hot meals.
• Canteen Rules shall be displayed & observed.
• Each Contractor shall provide facilities for
their own employees to eat food.
• Food shall not be consumed on Site.

SMOKING AND DRUGS
• Smoking is permitted in approved areas only,
obey the signs! Non compliance is a
disciplinary offence.
• Site Instructions shall be issued to advise all
personnel about the introduction of:
Smoking Prohibition/Restrictions
e.g. Transfer of Fuel Gas to Site.
• Use of or working under the influence of
illegal substances and alcohol on Site is
strictly prohibited. Dismissal and/or Legal
action may apply.

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND
ENVIRONMENT
• Only approved waste shall be placed in the
skips provided by your employer.
• Do not use other companies skips.
• Drip trays shall be used under all stationary
plant e.g. generators and compressors.
• For an oil or chemical spill, clean up & safe
waste disposal must begin immediately.
Absorbent material is available from SSM.
Note: MSDS provides spill control information.

HOUSEKEEPING
• Always place construction waste in skips.
• Skips must be emptied regularly.
• Timber must be de-nailed
• Do not obstruct access, egress & walkway’s.
• Do not obstruct Fire Fighting equipment.
• Do not obstruct Switch Gear & Control Panels.
• Only enough materials for 1 day should be
stored at a work point.

PRIOR TO WORKING ON SITE
You must know:
• Your employer/company.
• Your supervisor.
• Job Task and/or Method Statement
• The Hazards and Risks of your job.
• If you need a Permit for the Job Task.
• About safe access/egress at your place of
work.
• Photography is prohibited.

DURING WORK ON SITE
• Access/Egress routes clear at all times.
• Serviceable fire protection devices at work location.
• Housekeeping, keep work area clean & tidy.
• Use the right tools/equipment for the job.
• Ensure all machine guards are secure and in a safe
condition.
• Report defects to tools,equipment or plant.
• Anti-fall procedures are to be complied with at all
times.

WHEN LEAVING WORK AREA
• All waste must be removed.
• Secure tools & equipment.
• Ensure gas plant is safe/secure or removed.
• Remove empty gas cylinders.
• Ensure powered tools & equipment are de-energised.
• Return surplus materials to lay-down area.
• Remove hazardous substances and return to safe
storage facility.

SSM AUTHORITY TO ISSUE
INSTRUCTIONS
• SSM may issue Instructions to a Contractor and their
employees with respect to Site Regulations.
• SSM shall be entitled to take measures at the expense
of the offender if obligations stated in Site
Regulations are not complied with.
• SSM will publish Site Instructions/Site Notes on
special occasions that shall be observed.
• Site Regulations shall not relieve the Contractor from
his responsibility towards SSM and the Owner for
fulfilling the Contract.

SAFETY INCENTIVE SCHEME
• The AIM is to Prevent Incidents & Accidents.
• An ASSESSMENT for the Incentive Award is
carried out by SSM & Clients Representative
on a regular basis.
• To RECOGNISE the Contractor promoting
effective Safe Work Practices.
• SSM (Safety Advisor) may recommend Safety
at Work awards for individual workers.

Site Safety Induction 5 HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY • SSM is committed to a Safe & Healthy workplace. • SSM HSE Policy reviewed annually and displayed on Notice Board. • SSM views safety, health, environment, quality and social responsibility as factors of equal importance. • All contractors shall display their HSE Policy for all their employees.
  • 6. Site Safety Induction 6 ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY A culture where environmental consciousness influences all decisions. • Site Management ISO 14001 accredited • Environmental Policy/Programs/Procedures in place. • Site Management will monitor all activities. • Environmental obligations shall be complied with during Construction, Erection & Commissioning e.g. water resource conservation, emissions, waste disposal, dust & noise levels. Site Safety Induction 7 HEALTH & SAFETY POLICY • W5-Site Management is OHSAS 18001 accredited • Health & Safety regulations/ programmes and proceduresare in place. • Site Management will monitor all activities. • Environmental obligations shall be complied with during • Obligationsof Health and Safety (i.e. risk assessment, trainings, permit to work procedures preventive medical checkups, use of personal protective equipment, radiation protection regulations) shall be obligedduring Construction, Erection & Commissioning. SIEMENS A culture where health & safety consciousness influences all decisions.

  • 9. Site Safety Induction 9 TRAINING • All Site Workers shall attend a Site Safety Induction to work on site. • Certificates of Competence are required for specialist skills e.g. crane operators & welders. • Toolbox Talks will be given on a daily or Job Task basis by the Contractor(s) Supervisor(s). • Skill training is required for some tasks e.g. Confined space work, Roof work, Machine operators. • SSM will monitor Contractors Records of Training and Competence Assessments.
  • 10. Site Safety Induction 10 ACCESS - WORK • A Site Photo Pass & a Hard Hat Safety Sticker will be issued after this Induction Training has been completed. • Any person on Site that has not attended a Site Safety Induction shall be accompanied at all times by an inducted person. • Passes must be carried at all times on Site and produced when requested, by any member of the Client’s or SSM staff or other Management as proof of identity.
  • 11. Site Safety Induction 11 SITE ACCESS - WORK • Persons who have forgotten or lost their Site Pass may be given a temporary pass at Security on proof of identity. Note: there may be a delay in obtaining a Temporary Pass as Security will deal with normal Site entries as a priority. • Contractors shall provide SSM with an updated list of their personnel whenever there are changes.
  • 12. Site Safety Induction 12 SITE ACCESS-VEHICLES • All Site approved vehicles shall display a Site Vehicle Pass at all times. • All materials, equipment, tools etc. including waste may be hauled away only with approval from Siemens Site Management. • All persons & vehicles are subject to search by Site Security authorized by Site Management.
  • 13. Site Safety Induction 13 SITE ACCESS - VISITORS • Notice of all visitors to the Site must be given to SSM prior to arrival. • Site visitors must use the contractor’s car park, unless permission is obtained from SSM to bring their vehicles on to the Site. • Visitors shall be met at the Gatehouse by a representative of the company they are visiting and they must be accompanied at all times whilst on Site.
  • 14. Site Safety Induction 14 GENERAL TRAFFIC RULES • Site Speed Limit is 10 km/h. • Site construction vehicles must have flashing lights and reversing alarms. • All vehicles must give way to pedestrians and comply with traffic signs. • Motorcycles are not permitted on Site. • Smoking is not permitted in any vehicle on Site. • Road access shall not be obstructed by parked vehicles, trucks, cranes and machinery.
  • 15. Site Safety Induction 15 RADIO/MOBILE PHONE COMMUNICATIONS • Only persons issued with a Permit from Site Management are permitted to carry/use mobile phones in the Site Construction Area. • Hand held radios without a Permit shall not be used on Site. Permits subject to appropriate Laws & Regulations. • Radio frequency allocation to be approved by Site Management. • Radios & Mobile Phones shall not be used in designated Restricted Areas on Site e.g. Natural Gas facility.
  • 16. Site Safety Induction 16 EMERGENCYALARM • THE ALARM: for Site Evacuation is an XXXXXX . • ASSEMBLY AREAS: - All persons and contractors shall muster at their designated assembly areas. • Site Alarm test on XXXXXX at XXXX hrs. • System alarm tests shall be notified as required e.g. installed fire alarms. • The Site Alarm may also be used for other purposes e.g. blasting operations. Site Instructions will advise.
  • 17. Site Safety Induction 17 FIRE EMERGENCY RAISE THE ALARM (Site Emergency Procedure) a. Inform others in the area. b. Notify Siemens Site Safety/Security. c. Attempt to put out fire with a portable fire extinguisher only if it is safe to do so & you have been trained. d. Evacuate the area. e. Do not use the elevators. f. Report to your nominated assembly area.
  • 18. Site Safety Induction 18 INCIDENT/ACCIDENT PROCEDURE RAISE THE ALARM (Site Emergency Procedure) • Do not attempt to remove seriously injured casualties from the area unless they are in immediate danger. • Do not attempt to treat an injured person unless you are qualified (First Aid Certificate). • Do not disturb the scene of a serious incident / accident until permission is obtained from the Authorities & SSM.
  • 19. Site Safety Induction 19 INCIDENT / ACCIDENT REPORTING • Report all Incidents & Accidents to your supervisor immediately. • An Incident / Accident Report is to be raised to: a. Record b. Report c. Investigate the event as legally required NOTE: SIEMENS INCIDENT/ACCIDENT REPORT FORM SHALL BE USED ON SITE. CONTRACTORS SHALL REPORT TO AUTHORITIES ON APPROVED REPORT FORM. • Contractors shall advise SSM & the AUTHORITIES as required for all Serious Harm Accidents and Incidents that may have caused Serious Harm (Dangerous Occurrence).
  • 20. Site Safety Induction 22 NOISE • Noise levels > 85 dBA may damage your hearing. • Ear protection (plugs or muffs) must be worn when working in areas where noise levels exceed 85 dBA. • Peak readings up to 140 dBA of short duration can also damage hearing. • Some typical noise levels: 1. Powder actuated gun: 107- 110 dBA (Ear PPE 0 mins) 2. Cut-off saw: 89- 102 dBA ( “ “ 8 mins) 3. Bench Grinder: 92- 96 dBA ( “ “ 30 mins) 4. Hot Work Permit: (Personnel/Fire) 3. Confined Space Permit: (Personnel/Entrapment) 4. Radiography Permit: (Personnel/Radiation) 5. Overhead Crane Permit: (Personnel/Maintenance) 6. Road Closure Permit: (EmergencyAccess) • Work Permits are for all work with the potential to cause an accident e.g. contact with underground cables.

Site Safety Induction 24 EXCAVATIONS • Contractor must have a PERMIT TO DIG before any excavation is undertaken on Site. • If an excavation is more than 2m deep substantial barriers must be provided. • Sides must be prevented from collapsing. • Safe access and egress must be provided. • Excavations shall be inspected daily.

Site Safety Induction 25 EXCAVATIONS • Edge protection for vehicles shall be in place on traffic routes. • Loads & vehicles should not be placed near edge of excavation (min 0.6m). • Confined Space Procedures may apply. • All open holes & pits must be fenced or covered and warning signs displayed. • Water removal equipment shall be provided & monitored by a competent person.

Site Safety Induction 26 WORKING AT HEIGHT SCAFFOLDS • Competent persons only shall erect, alter or dismantle any scaffold structure. • Shall be erected on a stable surface, must be tagged and inspected weekly, & the inspection must be recorded. • Do not stockpile materials & equipment on platforms. • Do not work on scaffolds during high winds & storms. • Protect scaffolds from being struck by vehicles or crane operations. • Maintain scaffold area and platforms; clear debris, and remove excess materials & equipment.

Site Safety Induction 27 WORKING AT HEIGHT MOBILE ELEVATED WORK PLATFORMS • Operators must be trained, certified and competent to use MEWP´s. • Barricades and Signs must be used to indicate overhead work and exclusion area. • Equipment must be inspected, maintained and certified. • Operated only on level & stable ground. • Never move in elevated position. • DANGER beware of HV systems, cables etc. DANGER

Site Safety Induction 28 WORKING AT HEIGHT LADDERS • Ensure that the use of a ladder is the safest means of access. • Ensure stability (1:4 Ratio wall to height). • Use correct ladder for work e.g. electrical safety. • Workers shall be trained in correct use. • Ladders must extend 1m above step off point. SAFETY HARNESS • Safety harness shall only be used when other fall arrest systems are not practical. • Full one-piece body harness shall be used with appropriate lanyard assemblies.
  • 29. Site Safety Induction 29 OVERHEAD WORK • Barricades and Warning Signs shall be erected to indicate overhead work. • Never cross restricted area. • All tools and materials shall be secured. • Install protection nets & covered walkways. • Be aware of people working below.

Site Safety Induction 30 MOBILE CRANES & LIFTING EQUIPMENT • All cranes & lifting equipment shall be inspected prior to Site Access. • All cranes must comply with current Safety Regulations. • Mandatory safety devices must be operational e.g. 1. Radius or angle Indicator 2. Boom Length Indicator 3. Anti Two-Block Warning Device 4. Automatic SLI or SLI or LMI • Registers shall be maintained by Contractors for all lifting equipment e.g. slings, beams, shackles etc.
  • 31. Site Safety Induction 31 LIFTING OPERATIONS • Certified operators only can operate cranes or use lifting apparatus. Lifting equipment shall be certified and registers shall be maintained. • Certified Banksman shall direct lifts. They must be clearly identified e.g. Hi Viz vest. • Barricaded Exclusion Zone with Signs must be in place around lifting areas. Safetyman should be used to keep others out of zone. • All personnel involved in the lift shall be briefed and comply with lifting procedures (Method Statement).
  • 32. Site Safety Induction 32 WORKING WITH HAZARDOUS MATERIALS • Workers must read & understand instructions on the MSDS & the container before using any hazardous materials. Note: MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) • Do not use hazardous materials unless you have been given the correct information, instruction and training in their use. • Correct PPE for hazard(s) shall be used. • MSDS contains First Aid & Fire Fighting measures & handling, storage, transport & disposal information.

Site Safety Induction 33 WORKING WITH HAZARDOUS MATERIALS • Never place chemicals in unlabelled containers e.g. paint thinners in a water bottle. • Combustible materials shall be stored safely and away from sources of ignition. • Do not store hazardous materials in walkways, stairways or points of access & egress. • Flammable liquids, gases and foams shall be stored in fire resistant storage away from the workplace. • All gas cylinders shall be used and stored in compliance with Safety Regulations. e.g. Oxygen shall be stored 6m from flammable gasses.
  • 34. Site Safety Induction 34 HOT WORK • All work involving welding, cutting, use of a naked flame etc. requires a Hot Work Permit. Note: drilling & grinding work requires a Hot Work Permit whenever a possible flammable atmosphere may exist. • Purpose of the Hot Work Permit is protect others and for fire prevention - e.g. fire extinguishers, fire blankets, flash/spark screens and removal of combustibles. • Correct PPE must be used for all grinding, welding and cutting operations. • Fire watch check must be made before leaving an area after hot work.
  • 35. Site Safety Induction 35 CONFINED SPACE • A Confined Space Permit is required for work in any space with restricted entry or exit and is not designed for continuous occupancy. Note: Entry/Exit Register shall be at point of entry • Major Hazards: 1. Oxygen deficiency (<19.5%) & enrichment (>23.5%) 2. Fires & explosion 3. Toxic atmosphere 4. Physical hazards. • Qualified personnel ONLY are allowed to work in a Confined Space. • Hazards must be removed through preventative measures. e.g. forced air ventilation, low voltage equipment.

Site Safety Induction 36 ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT • All trailing leads and cables shall be safely suspended or fully protected. • Remove and replace damaged cables and connections. • Electrical equipment shall be properly constructed, installed and maintained. • Competent electricians only may inspect, test & repair equipment. • Earth leakage circuit breakers (RCDs) or Isolating Transformers shall be used at all times.

Site Safety Induction 37 PORTABLE ELECTRIC TOOLS • 110 VOLT equipment shall be used on Site. • Approved equipment only shall be used in Confined Spaces e.g. 25 volt hand lights. • Daily User Checks shall be carried out to ensure safe operating condition. • All tools shall be tested, tagged & recorded. • Compliance with Electrical Regulations is mandatory.

Site Safety Induction 38 WORK PLACE LIGHTING • Adequate lighting shall be provided at the work place (Contractors responsibility). • Caution, halogen lights operate at high temperatures and can cause fires, when knocked over or burns if contacted. • Temporary lighting must comply with Electrical Standards & Regulations.

Site Safety Induction 39 RADIOGRAPHY • SSM approval is required for all Radiography on Site. • Notification will be posted on the Radiography Notice Board at the Site entrance. • Barriers, Warning Signs and Flashing lights will designate the boundary. The Radiation Protection Officer must control the Restricted Area.

Site Safety Induction 40 COMPRESSED AIR EQUIPMENT • Coupler connections shall be secured in the approved manner. • Tools & equipment shall be maintained in a safe condition. • Check for leaking/damaged hoses, approved hose connections only shall be used. • Never use compressed air for cleaning down clothing or aim the hand device at another person. • Max pressure when cleaning with compressed air is 30 p.s.i (2 bar). • Correct PPE shall be used at all times.

Site Safety Induction 41 SITE WELFARE FACILITIES • Contractors shall provide approved accommodation including Canteen, Washing Facilities, Toilets and Changing Rooms for their employees. • Contractors shall ensure that the above are maintained in compliance with Safety, Health & Hygiene Regulations. • Site Management reserves the right to maintain such facilities at the Contractor´s cost. • Fouling of Site facilities or the Site area is forbidden. • Site drinking water points shall be clearly marked as . DRINKING WATER

Site Safety Induction 42 CANTEEN FACILITIES • Siemens Canteen is open in the morning at XX.XX – XX.XX a.m. for take away breakfasts, sandwiches etc. • Lunchtime opening is at XX.XX – XX.XX p.m. for hot meals. • Canteen Rules shall be displayed & observed. • Each Contractor shall provide facilities for their own employees to eat food. • Food shall not be consumed on Site.
  • 43. Site Safety Induction 43 SMOKING AND DRUGS • Smoking is permitted in approved areas only, obey the signs! Non compliance is a disciplinary offence. • Site Instructions shall be issued to advise all personnel about the introduction of: Smoking Prohibition/Restrictions e.g. Transfer of Fuel Gas to Site. • Use of or working under the influence of illegal substances and alcohol on Site is strictly prohibited. Dismissal and/or Legal action may apply.

Site Safety Induction 44 WASTE MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENT • Only approved waste shall be placed in the skips provided by your employer. • Do not use other companies skips. • Drip trays shall be used under all stationary plant e.g. generators and compressors. • For an oil or chemical spill, clean up & safe waste disposal must begin immediately. Absorbent material is available from SSM. Note: MSDS provides spill control information.

Site Safety Induction 45 HOUSEKEEPING • Always place construction waste in skips. • Skips must be emptied regularly. • Timber must be de-nailed • Do not obstruct access, egress & walkway’s. • Do not obstruct Fire Fighting equipment. • Do not obstruct Switch Gear & Control Panels. • Only enough materials for 1 day should be stored at a work point.

Site Safety Induction 47 DURING WORK ON SITE • Access/Egress routes clear at all times. • Serviceable fire protection devices at work location. • Housekeeping, keep work area clean & tidy. • Use the right tools/equipment for the job. • Ensure all machine guards are secure and in a safe condition. • Report defects to tools,equipment or plant. • Anti-fall procedures are to be complied with at all times.

Site Safety Induction 48 WHEN LEAVING WORK AREA • All waste must be removed. • Secure tools & equipment. • Ensure gas plant is safe/secure or removed. • Remove empty gas cylinders. • Ensure powered tools & equipment are de-energised. • Return surplus materials to lay-down area. • Remove hazardous substances and return to safe storage facility.

Site Safety Induction 49 SSM AUTHORITY TO ISSUE INSTRUCTIONS • SSM may issue Instructions to a Contractor and their employees with respect to Site Regulations. • SSM shall be entitled to take measures at the expense of the offender if obligations stated in Site Regulations are not complied with. • SSM will publish Site Instructions/Site Notes on special occasions that shall be observed. • Site Regulations shall not relieve the Contractor from his responsibility towards SSM and the Owner for fulfilling the Contract.

Site Safety Induction 50 SAFETY INCENTIVE SCHEME • The AIM is to Prevent Incidents & Accidents. • An ASSESSMENT for the Incentive Award is carried out by SSM & Clients Representative on a regular basis. • To RECOGNISE the Contractor promoting effective Safe Work Practices. • SSM (Safety Advisor) may recommend Safety at Work awards for individual workers.
