Planning a successful private cloud - CloudStack Collaboration Europe 2013Tim Mackey
So your boss just asked you to build a private cloud. Now what? Successful private clouds require a bit of planning, and your existing best practices may need to be adjusted. This deck covers some of the issues you'll face, or be aware of, as you migrate from an existing data center operation to one which is more "cloud-like". Some things may seem obvious, but there are aspects to network and storage design which impact success. This deck draws from my experience in building my first CloudStack cloud in early 2012 and has applicability to anyone seeking to deliver cloud services.
What are best practices for incorporating VMware Cloud on AWS into your existing architectures? You’ll learn about design considerations for integrating your Software Defined Data Centers (SDDCs) with native AWS services, and hear how VMware Cloud on AWS helps leverage existing investments while providing scalability, agility, and security.

There is no doubt that Openstack represents one of the massive industry alignment towards the Open source cloud, Some even touting it to be the linux of cloud computing. But is it “THE” perfect solution ?
Vanilla Openstack is a “Myth”
The choice of Openstack as part of your cloud strategy purely depends on the kind of workload and the add-on features.
Openstack can be a serious contender especially for fresh deployments and applications that are being architected for cloud. But as the environment gets diverse(legacy integrations) Openstack can be tricky to integrate and maintain
One might require a vendor based Cloud management platform especially when the cloud strategy involves public clouds(AWS, Azure, GCE) and migration of application services across
No doubt it is fully open source, but it comes with learning curve, release cycles, Vendor specific driver integrations etc.
Interesting developments with respect to containers, docker, Kubernetes, Mesosphere etc will challenge Openstack

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
In his public lecture, Christian Timmerer provides insights into the fascinating history of video streaming, starting from its humble beginnings before YouTube to the groundbreaking technologies that now dominate platforms like Netflix and ORF ON. Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

[Static slide with no animations. Useful for hand-outs.]
Veeam is perhaps best known for what we’ve done in the on-premises or private cloud data center. Starting back in 2008, we released version 1 of Veeam Backup and Replication for VMware environments. Over the years we’ve rapidly added industry first innovations to the product like Instant-VM Recovery, virtual sandbox and even SureBackup Recovery Verification. We also expanded to support Microsoft Hyper-V
Several years ago Veeam also recognized the need for service providers to provide availability to their customers. Our solutions for the Managed Cloud are part of the Veeam Cloud and Service providers program or VCSP. With over 14,000 VCSP’s globally providing Veeam Powered services, this is one of the fastest growing areas within Veeam. Enterprises can also benefit from with work we do with service providers, especially if the enterprise IT acts as a service provider themselves to the business.
Veeam also sees the need for companies to protect their data even if it’s in the cloud on a SaaS platform. SaaS data is customer data, not the data of the SaaS provider. As a result, many SaaS providers provide little, if any, capabilities to recover data that is more than a few days old. Veeam sees availability for SaaS platforms as an important market moving forward.
The hyper-public clouds such as Amazon and Azure also need availability. Just because a workload runs in the cloud doesn’t mean you can rely on the cloud provider to make it available in the event of an outage or data corruption. Veeam’s Agent for Linux and Agent for Windows are our first step and providing availability for these workloads.
The Veeam Availability Platform is designed around 3 key areas…
Enterprise Continuity - Recovery Service Level Objectives of less than 15 minutes for ALL applications and data; Disaster Recovery (DR) orchestration
Cloud Data Management - Availability for workloads across any cloud or location, to maximize IT investments and increase flexibility
And Compliance and Visibility - Proactive monitoring and reporting, and automated testing & documentation, to ensure business and regulatory requirements are met
The Veeam Availability Suite is the anchor for the platform and is the primary vehicle thru which we have delivered 24.7.365 Availability and enable the digital transformation of businesses. This is Veeam’s flagship product today, delivering virtual server Availability on-prem and via the private cloud.
Rounding our the platform are 3 additional products and functionality…
The Veeam Agents for Windows and Linux deliver availability for your public cloud and physical workloads. Veeam now provides Availability for ANY workload – whether its virtual, physical, or cloud-based!
Veeam Availability Orchestrator is a new product we announced last year and is coming in 2017. VAO enables enterprises to easily execute, test and document disaster recovery (DR) plans for Veeam backups and replicas…a critical part of your Availability and DR strategy.
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 is integrated with Veeam Backup & Replication and allows you to:
Maintain email access by securely backing up Office 365 email data back to your environment
Avoid data loss via quick recovery of individual mailbox items with best-of breed granularity
Satisfy legal & regulatory requirements with efficient eDiscovery of email archives
Looking at all the elements brought together in this diagram, it’s our intention to show you that our vision is to provide availability for your workloads and data no matter where they reside – on-prem (enterprise), managed cloud, SaaS or public cloud. Now let’s look into more detail on each of these 4 areas…

Cloud connect replication will allow a partial or complete failover via something called a network extension appliance. Resources will be ‘abstractable’, where Veeam will separate resource usage per customer on a RAM, CPU, Disk and Network level – and public IPs can be defined to make network failover simpler. Network failover will be very easy to implement and will use Proxy ARP for cross-site connectivity. This means that you will be able to communicate with your VMs regardless of physical location.
So now Veeam will be able to manage backup, replication, end-to-end failover and failback with networking built in – all still running over a single SSL port. A technical preview of Cloud Connect is available for partner testing (as of 13-Aug-15). For more see: http://www.veeam.com/blog/the-new-veeam-cloud-connect-now-with-replication-services.html
