This document provides an overview of atomic absorption spectroscopy. It discusses the basic principles including how atomic absorption spectroscopy quantifies the absorption of ground state atoms in the gaseous state using ultraviolet or visible light. It describes the typical instrumentation used including hollow cathode lamps as the light source, nebulizers to create a fine aerosol spray, flame or graphite furnace atomizers to vaporize samples, monochromators to select wavelengths, and detectors to convert light signals to electrical signals. Applications like environmental monitoring and food/pharmaceutical analysis are mentioned. Two experiments on determining vanadium in lubricating oil and trace elements in contaminated soil are briefly outlined.
