Simile and Metaphor
Both similes and metaphors are comparisons
  between two things.

I love my car; it’s like a child to me.
(Car = Child)
In Andrew’s eyes, Beth is the sun.
(Beth = Sun)

The difference is how the comparison is expressed.
Simile
• A simile uses “like” or “as” to express the
  comparison.

You are like a wild animal today!
(You=Wild Animal)

Heather’s is as cute as a baby.
(Heather = Baby)
Metaphor
• A metaphor compares two things by saying
  one this is the other.

You are my sunshine.
(You=Sunshine)
Reagan is a silly monkey when she is playing.
(Reagan=Monkey)
How to Answer These Questions
              Correctly
1. You need to be able to identify what two
things are being compared. Ask yourself what
one thing “is” (for example, Reagan is…)
2. You also need to know if it’s a metaphor or a
simile…look for the key words (like/as) or if
one thing is just being called the other thing.
3. This kind of figurative language shows up a
lot in poetry. Be especially aware of it when
   reading that kind of writing.
