METAPHOR & SIMILE
WHAT IS METAPHOR?
 Metaphor compares one item with
another by saying that it is the other
item.
Eg: Your room is a pigsty.
( Meaning: your room is so dirty and smelly that it
is like a pigsty)
The comparison is made without the
use of like or as.
PURPOSE OF METAPHOR:
 Metaphors make our writing more interesting by
making us look at things from a different light.
Eg: my brother is a pain in the neck
(Meaning: my brother gives me a lot of trouble)
EXAMPLES
I am a rainbow
"I am a rainbow" is an example of metaphor
because it is comparing two nouns, a person, and a
rainbow, but does not use “like” or “as”.
Her laugther is a gentle song.
My brother is a flag pole.
 He has the courage of a lion.
 You are the sun in my sky.
 You are the light in my life.
 His heart is ice cold.
 The lake is a mirror of beauty.
 Her eyes are jewels sparkling in the sky.
PROVERBS, EXPRESSIONS
 A snake in the grass  gizli düşmən
 To make mountains out of molehills  şişirtmək
 To take a bee line  kəsə yol ilə getmək
 The homework was a breeze
 The idea was difficult to swallow
 My dad was boiling mad.
 Her dog, Jake was the sunshine
of her life.

METAPHOR IN LITERATURE
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women
merely players;
They have their exits and their
entrances;
As You Like It
— William Shakespeare, As You Like It
This quote is a metaphor because the world is not literally a
stage. By figuratively asserting that the world is a stage,
Shakespeare uses the points of comparison between the world
and a stage to convey how the world works and the lives of the
people within it.
WHAT IS SIMILE ?
 Simile is a comparison between two unlike things
that have something in common.
Eg. His skin was cold as ice.
He was slow like a snail.
A simile always uses the words like or as to make a
comparison.
PURPOSE OF SIMILE
 Authors use simile to explain, express emotion,
and to make their writing more vivid and
entertaining
Sweet as a honeybee
As hungry as a bear
As stubborn as a mule
Like a rolling stone
Like a bird up in the sky
EXAMPLES
SIMILES OFTEN MAKE USE OF IRONY OR
SARCASM. IN SUCH CASES THEY MAY EVEN MEAN
THE OPPOSITE OF THE ADJECTIVE USED.
LOOK AT THESE EXAMPLES:
 His explanation was as clear as mud.
(not clear at all since mud is opaque)
 The film was about as interesting as watching a
copy of Windows download.
(long and boring)
 Watching the show was like watching paint dry.
(very boring)
SIMILES ARE OFTEN FOUND IN POETRY AND
OTHER LITERATURE.
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES:
 Dawn breaks open like a wound that bleeds
afresh - Wilfred Owen
 Death has many times invited me: it was like the
salt invisible in the waves - Pablo Neruda
 Guiltless forever, like a tree - Robert Browning
 Yellow butterflies flickered along the shade like
flecks of sun - William Faulkner
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METAPHOR & SIMILE
The terms metaphor and simile are slung around as
if they meant exactly the same thing.
A simile is a metaphor, but not all metaphors are
similes.
Eg:
 He is a heart of stone. (metaphor)
His heart is as hard as stone. (simile)
 He is a couch potato. (metaphor)
He is like a couch potato. (simile)
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METAPHOR & SIMILE
You are my sunshine.
(metaphor)
Your eyes are like the sun.
(simile)
