Tree Melia azadirach Habit and form • Fast-growing, • Deciduous tree • height of around 45 meters in closed, moist forests, though it is much smaller in the cooler and drier regions • Moist sunny location at elevations up to 2,700 meters in the Himalayas Flowers • Round berry with thin fleshy skin, approx. 1.5 cm. Light yellow Fruit • Pod linear flat, broad,, sapwood, glabrous, greenish tinged purple till ripe.. • Flowering and fruiting time : September - November Bark/Leaf • Dark brown to reddish brown, mature trunks grooved • Bipinnate, 25- 60 cm long, leaves ovate to elliptical, 2 - 5 cm long, dark green, feathered leaf Culture • The tree should tolerate storms well, having hard wood with flexible branches. • Planting distances of 3 meters x 1 meter on fertile soil. • Young seedlings are very slow growing. Landscape uses • Avenues and broad streets, parks, • Squares, cemeteries, large gardens • grouping or mass plantings • good accent tree Liabilities • Trees will be killed by temperatures falling lower than about -5°c • It can succeed with an annual rainfall as low as 600mm.   • 3. Tree Lagerstroemia speciose Habit and form • A small to medium - sized tree • Height- 5-6m. • Spread-3/3.5m dia. Flowers • Blue, very beautiful, in large panicles of many flowers, pedicels stout, hairy. • Calyx tubular, hairs white, ribbed with12-14 stout ridges. • Petals 6, purple, round ovate, clawed, much wavy and crumpled, spreading. Fruit • Capsules with loculicidal dehiscence • Seeds. • Many winged at apex • The bark, fruit (14 - 17 %) • The leaves (12 - 13 %) Bark • A yellow dye is obtained from the bark smooth when young, furrowed to scaly when old • Long internodes • New stems are somewhat silvery-gray Culture • The tree should tolerate storms well, having hard wood with flexible branches • Planting distances of 3 meters x 1 meter on fertile soil • Young seedlings are very slow growing Landscape uses • Cultivated in the gardens and planted on the road sides. Liabilities • Seedlings can flower when only 2 years old • Temp. Tree Bauhinia purpurea Habit and form • characteristic of mixed deciduous forests, A small to medium - sized tree • Simple, roundish, as broad as long, divided into 2 obtuse lobes, stipules long triangular, base cordate. • Tree growing to 10 m (32ft) by 9 m (29ft) at a fast rate Flowers • Showy, fragrant, in terminal and axillary corymbose racemes, bracts triangular, bracteoles 2, below the middle. • Calyx hairy, dilated upwards, divided at the apex into 5 short teeth.Petals oblanceolate, long - clawed, rosy purple with veins Fruit • Pod linear flat, broad,, subwoody, glabrous, greenish tinged purple till ripe.. • Flowering and Fruiting time : September - November Bark • The bark is a source of tannins[ 287 ]. It is also used for dyeing • A fiber is obtained from the bark • The wood is rosy-white in color Culture • Planting distances of 3 meters x 1 meter on fertile soil • often of a dry type, occurring on hill slopes, in valleys, and along streams Landscape uses • Pest tolerant, Aggressive surface roots possible, Specimen, Blooms are very showy. • Use in garden, water side area Liabilities • The tree is also known to yield gum. • The leaves are used as cattle fodder and are eaten as vegetable or pickle. • maximum shade temperature of 38 - 46c Fact :- • Leaves - cooked and eaten as a vegetable • The seeds are fried and eaten.
