The silkworm moth lives only in captivity and can no longer survive independently in nature since it has lost the ability to fly. Silkworms go through three life stages - larvae, pupae, and adult. They are specialized feeders that only eat mulberry tree leaves. After centuries of domestication, adult silkworms can no longer fly or exist in their natural habitat. A silkworm cocoon is made of a single silk strand over 900 meters long, and it takes 300 cocoons to make 1 pound of silk. Studies show silkworms use two basic movements, stretch-bend and swing-swing, to construct their protective cocoon envelopes.
