Shu Ha Ri
Team Development
Introduction

Shu Ha Ri is used to describe the
progression of training or learning. It is a
Japanese martial art concept that is used
to describe the stages of learning to
mastery.
It is known that, when we learn or train in
something, we pass through the stages of
shu, ha, and ri. These stages are explained
as follows.
Shuhari
In shu, we repeat the forms and discipline
ourselves so that our bodies absorb the forms
that our forbearers created. We remain
faithful to the forms with no deviation.
Business Approach – Shu
Follow the Rule
While in the shu stage, the teams follows the techniques as
taught without modification and without yet attempting to
understand the rationale. They trust their leader and play by the
rules.
Shuhari
Next, in the stage of ha, once we have
disciplined ourselves to acquire the forms and
movements, we make innovations. In this
process the forms may be broken and
discarded.
Business Approach – Ha
Break the Rule
Once a team reliably demonstrates their ability to do the daily
stand-up well following the rules, they can choose to break the
rules and go a step further in planning and actions, because they
understand the principles underlying the company and the
project.
Shuhari
Finally, in ri, we completely depart from the forms,
open the door to creative technique, and arrive in a
place where we act in accordance with what our
heart/mind desires, unhindered while not
overstepping laws.
Business Approach – Ri
Be the Rule
The ri-level practitioner thinks originally and develops new
thoughts about the business strategy from his/her background
knowledge and tests them against the reality of that knowledge
and conclusions as well as the demands of market. They are fully
aware of whole project and they are able to face new company
demands and needs.
Important!
Wherever you may be in your business
journey, the future is based on the ability to
sense, to learn and to adapt all aspects of the
firm at the pace of market and competitive
change.
