A learning organization has five main
features: personal mastery, mental
models, shared vision, team learning
and systems thinking.
Personal mastery
Three components are essential to obtain personal mastery:
 Making reality reach your vision.
 Having a commitment to truth and not deceive yourself no
matter how comforting or convenient self-deception might be.
 Obtaining a personal vision, which is a concrete picture of the
future you desire.
Mental models
You need to change your mental models, which are used to
understand the world that affects our behaviour.
Shared vision
It’s the answer to the question: What do we want to create or
accomplish?
It’s mainly what the members of the organization want to create
or accomplish.
A shared vision makes learning easier and aim at perfection in
achievement of goals because all members of the organization
will want to pursue the common vision.
Team learning
It starts with dialogue, the capacity of members of a team to hold
assumptions and start a process of thinking and talking together.
Team learning is essential because teams, not individuals, are the
fundamental learning unit in modern organizations.
Systems thinking
Peter Senge believes that it is the key that holds all the five
concepts together as a coherent whole. When we use the words
„system” we are referring to anything that shapes or conditions
behaviour. It gives us a way of seeing what our real problem is
and getting a better understanding of where we are right now or
seeing our current reality. It enable us to see what we have but
also how we can make real and lasting beneficial change in a
structure or system.
