The shoulder is an inherently unstable ball-and-socket joint due to its shallow socket. A dislocated shoulder occurs when the ball of the humerus is forced out of the socket, most commonly anteriorly due to falls or blows. Symptoms include pain, swelling, limited mobility and a visible deformity. Treatment involves closed reduction followed by immobilization to heal damaged tissues like the glenoid labrum. Recurrence is prevented by surgical repair of stabilizing structures.
