Paul In Tangerine
SWOOSH! That was the sound of someone s foot kicking a soccer ball, or was it a football? Either
way the only important SWOOSH sound is the one that is heard on the sports fields that Erik Fisher
plays. Why you ask? Because in Tangerine by Edward Bloor Paul Fisher will learn that even those
visually impaired can see when someone is cruel. Author Edward Bloor lived in Trenton, New Jersey
before attending Fordham University in New York, and now resides in Florida. He has penned books
titled Crusaders, Storytime, and Soccer, Tangerine, and Me which are all fiction novels. He was
nominated for Young Readers Award. There are many moments of character development for Paul in

The soccer field is important to Paul because playing soccer is his passion and the soccer field is
where he finds his almost only confidence. When Paul is on the soccer field, he doesn t care about
Erik or his parents, or anything else going on in his life. It s just him, his teammates, and the sport. For
example, War Eagles! War Eagles! We started moving our hands in unison, up and down, changing the
chant into the frenzied cry of War! War! War! This evidence shows how Paul was just happily
shouting along with his teammates, not focusing on anything or anybody else. People who enjoy
realistic fiction novels that include sibling rivalry, sports, making life changes, and the tension of a
dysfunctional family environment will be interested in reading this journal writing from the first
person perspective of Paul Fisher. This novel includes characteristics of middle school encounters ;
therefor, ages 10 and up will appreciate this

Computer Graphics
Computer graphics are graphics created using computers and, more generally, the representation and
manipulation of image data by a computer. The development of computer graphics has made
computers easier to interact with, and better for understanding and interpreting many types of data.
Developments in computer graphics have had a profound impact on many types of media and have
revolutionized animation, movies and the video game industry.
Overview
The term computer graphics has been used in a broad sense to describe almost everything on
computers that is not text or sound . Typically, the term computer graphics refers to several different
things:
the representation and manipulation of image data by a computer

Another example is that Sutherland s software modeled objects not just a picture of objects. In other
words, with a model of a car, one could change the size of the tires without affecting the rest of the
car. It could stretch the body of the car without deforming the tires.
These early computer graphics were vector graphics, composed of thin lines whereas modern day
graphics are Raster based using pixels.
Further 1960s developments
Also in 1961 another student at MIT, Steve Russell, created the first video game, Spacewar. Written
for the DEC PDP 1, Spacewar was an instant success and copies started flowing to other PDP 1
owners and eventually even DEC got a copy. The engineers at DEC used it as a diagnostic program on
every new PDP 1 before shipping it. The sales force picked up on this quickly enough and when
installing new units, would run the world s first video game for their new customers.
E. E. Zajac, a scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratory (BTL), created a film called Simulation of a two
giro gravity attitude control system in 1963.[5] In this computer generated film, Zajac showed how the
attitude of a satellite could be altered as it orbits the Earth. He created the animation on an IBM 7090
mainframe computer. Also at BTL, Ken Knowlton, Frank Sindon and Michael Noll started working in
the computer graphics field. Sindon created a film called Force, Mass and Motion illustrating Newton

A Comparison Of Shrek And Siddhartha
Siddhartha and Shrek contain similarities as mono myths; however the story of Shrek is the more
creative work of the two. Both stories are good examples of mono myths, but the appeal of each story
is very different. The audience reading Siddhartha and the audience watching Shrek are most likely
polar opposites. Siddhartha s audience is probably more adults and religiously based. Shrek s audience
is probably more children and family friendly.
Siddhartha is a spiritual and religious novel that is intended to teach the reader about how
Enlightenment may be achieved. The story line follows Siddhartha through his journey to find
Enlightenment for himself. Siddhartha is the son of a wealthy Brahmin. Siddhartha learns the ways of

My research paper is entitled, Analyzing Heart of Darkness...
My research paper is entitled, Analyzing Heart of Darkness through a Feminist Lens. Through this
paper, I will investigate and examine Heart of Darkness by means of Feminist Criticism and literary
theory. I aspire to thoroughly analyze the entire narrative, in order to pull out and pinpoint various
aspects and examples linked to feminist theory. I want to investigate and spotlight specific
occurrences, in the novel, where characteristics of Feminist Criticism can be found or applied. I
specifically want to look at the tree women characters introduced in the text; The Intended The
Mistress and Marlow s aunt. I also want to prove that Heart of Darkness is a text that openly conflicts
with the basis of feminism.
To begin this paper, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Joseph Conrad s novel Heart of Darkness, Marlow s mindset towards women represents the rather
widespread viewpoint of the 19th century. Men during this time viewed women as insignificant and
inferior. Perhaps that is why there are only three female characters in Heart of Darkness: Kurtz s
mistress, Kurtz s Intended, and Marlow s aunt. Marlow references these women with the intention of
giving the narrative more gist. Though they certainly perform particular functions in the story, these
women don t really correlate with the main premise of the tale. The main theme of the story centers on
how Marlow s voyage into the Congo leads him to self discovery. The journey helps to mold and
shape his beliefs in humanity and causes him to question morality.
At the outset of Marlow s narrative he expresses how he, Charlie Marlow, set the women to work to
get a job. Marlow communicates this in the perspective that he was so determined to adventure into
the trade commerce that he did what was unconceivable in the time period: he asked a woman for
money. The lady, his aunt, seems to surpass the customary role of women during the time period. She
tells Marlow that she is overjoyed to aid him in his endeavors. She even instructs him to ask her for
help whenever he desires it. This occurrence does not play too much of a role in the overall premise of
the tale; it merely functions to tell the reader how Marlow succeeds in getting the finances he needs to

Law Enforcement Research Paper
There have been many different kinds of new equipment introduced in police departments. Such as
fire arms like, new pistols, rifles, and shotguns. There have also been new motor vehicles introduced
like, SUV, cars, motorcycle, boats, helicopters, and planes. Also there has been a lot of new gear
introduced in law enforcement, like police duty gear, clothing and boots. With all this new equipment,
law enforcement will be able to lower crime rate because they will be able to do their jobs faster, more
efficiently, and they will be able to do their job better. For example, with a motorcycle, the new ones

Why I Want To Be A Physical Therapist
Most people ponder what they want to do when they become an adult starting at a young age. Some
are passionate and have a particular interest while others may take a different path than what they
originally thought. However, no matter what career one considers, there will always be thousands to
explore. School is an opportunity for young adults to discover what interests them so that they may
find a career that leads to happiness. The first shadow I attended was at Cumberland Physical Therapy
to learn more about the life of a physical therapist. This career interested me because I had once gone
to a physical therapist with my Dad when he tore his ACL and was intrigued by how active and
exciting the career appeared. The day started at 6:00 in the morning because the majority of patients
come before they go to work. During my job shadow, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

each branch, I found the Coast Guard and a life at sea as a career that I could picture myself doing for
the rest of my life. From the virtual shadow I learned that navigational skills and a third mate s deck
license was required to sail unlimited tonnage vessels as a shipmate. Shipmates must also have
knowledge in the area of public safety and security since they are responsible for not only themselves,
but the other people aboard their ship. Some of the basic responsibilities that a shipmate has is to be
able to steer and navigate vessels using compasses or lighthouses. After shadowing a shipmate, I
believe that this career is the one that I am most likely to pursue. I m going to pursue this career
because it provides both a physical and mental challenge that greatly interests

Essay about Nelson Mandela Worked to End Apartheid in...
I have always thought that Nelson Mandela has been one of the most important people in history. I
find it very fascinating that one man could end the Apartheid and that is why I want to find out more
about this. South Africa is a country with a past of enforced racism and separation of its multi racial
community. The White Europeans invaded South Africa and started a political system known as
Apartheid (meaning apartness ). This system severely restricted the rights and lifestyle of the non
White inhabitants of the country forcing them to live separately from the White Europeans. I have

system rose and fell in South Africa. Racial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(History, 2013) The population of South Africa were segregated into categouries of Coloured, Black,
White and Indian. Black South African lives were affected in many different ways and it still is today.
Apartheid meant great hardship, it meant that Black people were unable to live a reasonable life. All
natural civil rights were taken away from them. Public beaches, drive in cinema parking spaces,
graveyards, parks and public toilets are just a few things that were racially segregated. You can say
that the church was on of few places races could mix without breaking the law. (Wikipedia, 2013)
Black South Africans were segregated in education and there were even different laws. For example if
a Black African committed a crime, this person could expect years in prison. But if it was a White
African, the consequence would probably only be getting charged. Black Africans were treated
inhumanely and considered to be filth.(NelsonMandelas, 2013) The purpose of their education was to
train them to be Black labourers or servants as it was considered all they were good for. In addition,
whole communities were transported by the police to new areas far away from their old homes, which
were often bulldozed to the ground. One of these communities were Sophiatown, and here is a
inhabitant describing what it was that happened: We had to take everything and throw it outside.

Confusion and Personal Identity in Rip Van Winkle Essay
Rip Van Winkle tells the story of a man who, on a trek into the Kaatskill mountains, mysteriously
sleeps away twenty years of his life during the Revolutionary War. When he returns home, he finds
that things have dramatically changed; King George no longer has control over the colonies, and many
of his friends have either died or left town. At this point, the story reaches its climax, where Van
Winkle realizes that his life may be forever changed.
To this point, Rip Van Winkle has had only to deal with the change in his surroundings. Having no
doubts about his personal character, his fears remain singular only briefly, for when the crowd points
to a man whom they call Rip Van Winkle, he begins to question his being as well. I m ... Show more

In the telling of Rip s previous life, Irving does not hide Rip s laziness and unproductive nature, but
the reader is constantly reminded of Rip s kind and gentle qualities. Never do we view his actions
negatively, for his poor work habits are overshadowed by his character strength and other amusing
qualities.
In this selection, however, no effort is made to disguise these traits. The man is ...apparently as lazy,
and certainly as ragged. No disclaimers. Rip Van Winkle notices these traits, and he is ...now
completely confounded. His confusion has increased, but confounded also refers to shame the shame
he might feel about his past.
As the confusion increases, Rip begins to question his identity. When the man with the cocked hat
asks who Rip was and what was his name, we are more concerned with Rip s identity as a human
being than the answers to these simplistic questions, and so is Rip, for these questions become of
greater importance when we consider how they concern Rip s inner self. He responds that ...I am not
myself, and he enters a near panic as he describes his sad plight. His thoughts become shorter. The
words used are shorter.
Rip Van Winkle is losing control of the situation. He desperately wants to believe that he is still
himself, but he can find nothing to support his claims; When coupled with the self examination of his
past life, we see that Rip Van Winkle is having trouble discerning the truth within himself.

The Birth Control And Contraceptive Pills
Birth control up to this global has been a topic of contention. Abortion is still illegal in many
countries, and the issue is still up for debate. Birth control and contraceptive pills, however, are
common aspects of family planning. These have been helpful for not only families but also national
governments in their bid to control population growth. To achieve this, however, down history, there
have been numerous efforts by quite remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to fight for
women rights and birth control. Among such personalities is Margaret Sanger who is widely regarded
as the mother of contraceptives and birth control (Watson). It is through the efforts of this fearless
woman in collaboration with other like minded individuals that contraceptive pills came to be and
their subsequent legalization. As evidenced by her numerous campaigns based on feminism and
women rights, she fought a hard battle in the process of legalizing birth control. This study paper
investigates and establishes various aspects of her life and the subsequent achievements of her efforts.
Historical Perspective
Sanger was born on September 14, 1879, in Corning New York. She was an atheist in terms of
religion. In addition, she was White, had a straight sexual orientation and was a Republican in terms
of party affiliation. Her father was Michael Hennessey Higgins who was Irish American and Anne
Purcell Higgins her mother. She came from a family of eleven children though her mother went

Theories Of Synergy Theory
One of the theories used to explain why firms engage in M A is the synergy theory. Synergy theory or
hypothesis asserts that the sum value of both individual firms before an M A is lower than that of the
combined firm (Seth, 1990). This increase in value is due to the effect of the synergy potentials which
could only be realized by combining operational and financial resources of both firms. These
synergies present the extra value created by merger. Thus, creating value for shareholders that at least
equates or exceeds the cost of the acquisition should be the primary objective of any M A. Essentially,
synergies should be the sole principle in justifying companies to engage in M A. In theory, financial
synergy of a merger is realized when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
No private assumption on the value of a company is given. Oftentimes, this is not the case. The Harris
poll published in 1984 suggest otherwise. According to the Harris poll, only 32 percent of the
surveyed executives thought that the stock market correctly value their companies price, while 60
percent disagreed and felt that their companies are undervalued (Harris poll, 20 February 1984). This
private assumption of fair price could easily find its way onto the M A negotiation table. Therefore,
another theory the valuation theory is also used to analyze how M A could create value for the
shareholders. The valuation theory states that the managers of the acquiring firm may possess more
knowledge of the target firm than what actually is being valued through the price of stock in the
market (Trautwein, 1990). The knowledge, termed asymmetric information by Ravenscraft and
Scherer (1987), could include an undervaluation of the target firm, or an unbeknownst advantage in
the event the two firms are combined. While the later statement is more or less in alignment with the
synergy theory, the mentioned synergy here has not been fully evaluated by the market. The former
suggests that a discrepancy between market value and private assumption on the price of a target due
to undisclosed asymmetric information. Both can put the price of acquisition at market value but well
below its true value. Valuation theory suggested that once the target firm become acquired part of the
acquiring firm and the asymmetric information is fully disclosed, the shareholders would experience
an immediate wealth effect due to revaluation of the market based on the newly available

Social Media And Social Mess Essay
Social Media or Social Mess According to Pew Research, 95% of teens are Internet users with an
astonishing 85% using Social Media. Social Media is defined as websites and applications that enable
users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Social media is a huge
platform for cultural revolutions and controversies. There is a large amount of potential issues with
this revolution including the possibility of cyberbullying as well as the depression that can be
developed by only seeing the best part of everyone s daily life. This creates a false image that
everyone has a perfect life that users believe is impossible to attain. They, in turn, view their life as
dull or not as exciting as others simply because they cannot go on their summer break to swim with
dolphins or skydive, because they are not committing to a college on a full ride for Football, because
they don t have that seemingly perfect relationship with their parents or siblings. On the other side of
the spectrum, Social Media can be used for many great causes such as activism, it can be used to stay
in touch with old friends, and it can be used to encourage others or bring to light issues that no one
would have heard about it they were not Facebook friends with Joe Schmo. Social Media is a trade off
that western culture, and increasingly the world, must learn to deal with or restrict. Social Media is
dangerous to dictators, it is helpful to helping hands, and it is hurtful to those

Introduction
Due to the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, a large number of Wall Street executives, financial
managers and other corporate officers were accused of their unethical behavior. At the same time,
some people pointed that cheating had become more prevalent among business students. An article
reported that 56% of business students admitted that they had cheated when they were studying in
school, but only 47% of nonbusiness students admitted to cheating when they were students. The same
type of debate occurred in the Bayview University as well, so the dean decided to run a test to see

academic integrity into the fabric of the university, developing student character and integrity, and
reducing temptations and opportunities for cheating.

The Fifth Of May By Francisco De Goya

Humanities 1101 The Third of May Francisco De Goya was born on March 30 about 1746 in Fuentes

1786 and the early portion of his career. Goya was considered one of the most crucial Spanish artists
of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Francisco married Josefa Bayeu y Subías.The couple had
only one child; he received the name of Xavier. One of the most recognized paintings was the Third of
May in 1808. The third of May, is one of the greatest testament to the honors of the war ever painted

moment in the Spanish war versus French army. The French army invaded the Spanish, putting them

Vietnam War Effects On American Society
The Vietnam war lasted from 1955 to 1975. Many Vietnamese and American lives were lost during
this war. The American society was split during this time, there were two different groups. People who
supported the war at this time were referred to hawks. The other people, which opposed the war were
referred to doves. The war was a negative impact on America s society because it was costly, the
media made the government lose support, and the draft.

Another incident when innocent people were hurt was the My Lai video. This video was a negative
because it showed many innocent Vietnamese people getting killed. This was a village where no
Vietcong men lived, but the United States military still went into this village and killed everyone that
was there. This included many children and innocent women. In the letter from Ho

Katherine Anne Porter s The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
Katherine Anne Porter s The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is a short story published in 1930. Through
an omniscient point of view, Porter is able to convey Granny Weatherall as a strong, independent
woman who has faced hardships throughout her life. The narrator presents Weatherall s thoughts and
feelings in a way that sounds similar to a first person point of view. Therefore, the reader is able to
empathize with her. Granny Weatherall s memories symbolize the major turning points in her life that
have shaped her into an independent woman. Porter effectively delivers themes of abandonment and
denial with the use of stream of consciousness, biblical allusions, and religious symbolisms. Porter s
use of stream of consciousness gives insight to Granny Weatheralls thoughts and feelings as she is
approaching her death. In one paragraph, there is a dialogue between Granny Weatherall and her
daughter, Cornelia, and in the next paragraph there is a transition to one of her memories. This shift is
evident when the narrator states, Ah, I ll never be young again but I d be happy if they d let me lie in

body was now only a deeper shadow in an endless darkness and this darkness would curl around the
light and swallow it up. God, give a sign! For the second time there was no sign (Pg. 267). Although
the second jilting can be interpreted as Hapsy abandoning her, it can also refer to Christ abandoning

Critical Analysis Of Kate Chopin s The Awakening
The Awakening Critical Essay The novel The Awakening by Kate Chopin contains content that is
highly debatable and easily controversial. In the essay Chopin s The Awakening by Roger Platizky, the
author interpreted from the novel that the depression of Edna Pontellier, the main feminine lead, is
created not only from the male oppression of the time period, but is also derived from the idea that
Edna is affected by a previous encounter with sexual violence, either as a witness or a victim. While
there is some way to infer that this is true, it is not confirmed and is quite a reach, considering her life
now and willingness with men. The reason that some readers believe this is due to her mood changes,
boundary problems and suicide (Platizky, Roger). If Edna was a victim or witness to sexual violence,
she would be even more submissive and fragile as a character. This theory is untrue, however, because
throughout the novel Edna Pontellier displays a growing strength that is presented to the men in her
life and finally gains her the independence she has been desiring, even if it isn t in the most
predictable way. In the essay, Chopin s The Awakening, Platizky writes that while one could argue she
was just shy or introverted, Edna s sweeping passions later in the novel suggest the introversion may
have been imposed. (Platizky, Roger). While this is true that Edna has sweeping passions later in the
novel, it is not correlated to Edna wanting to block something from her memory, such as sexual
violence. While someone could insist that Edna s mood swings are suggesting the protagonist is trying
to block something more than just her realization that she is unhappy in her present marriage
(Platizky), that information is extremely faulty. Instead, Edna s mood swings deal with the oppression
of the patriarchal society that women were thrown into during this time period. Each woman was
supposed to lack individuality and obey the men, especially in the Creole Catholic society. Edna s lack
of cooperation towards this norm shows up often in The Awakening.
She could not at that moment have done other than denied and resisted. She wondered if her husband
had ever spoken to her like that before, and is she has submitted

The Beat Generation Subculture Essay
The Beat Generation Subculture
Every generation has its middle class, majority, and norm, which are decided by that era s standards of
behavior and thought. Similarly, each generation has a group that rejects these standards and rebels
against the norm. In the 1950 s a group of American writers that exemplified this behavior formed.
They were called the beat generation. The beat generation was particularly remarkable because
although it was began by an exceptionally small group of people, its cultural influence was enormous.
The beats rebelled against things like conformity and consumerism in the post World War II society.
Their writing challenged both traditional American values and contemporary writing styles.

Many writers in the group later renounced the term when they felt it lost its meaning. It took the beats
a long time before they gained fame however. Jack Kerouac s novel, On the Road, went through many
different publishers before anyone agreed to print it. When it did come out it was heavily criticized by
the press. In the 1950 s the lifestyle that On the Road explored was considered deviant. The stereotype
that emerged in the mass media was a spaced out beatnik, dressed in black, pounding on bongo drums
and muttering gibberish as poetry (Microsoft Encarta, 2001). America s youth, however, identified
with the feelings of despair and the need for freedom expressed in their work. The beats created a
revolution that began with many young people leaving their conventional lives to hitchhike around
American and find themselves. Like most subcultures, the Beat Generation rebelled against the social
and cultural norms of their time. For them it was the post World War II society that they rejected.
Cultural historians point out that acquisition of consumer goods, which had been scarce during
wartime, became a central feature of postwar life, driven by the mass media, advertising, and generous
loan terms (Encarta, 2001). The

The Theory Of Science And Architecture
Architecture can be related to anything such as society or science, society demands the building of
their dream and science made building possible. Science and architect share a mutual goal where both
intended to improve the society life style or in another word, to achieve community utopia. Science
and architect is one of the main elements to promote utopia and this really make the society to believe
that utopia exist. The future will be the combination of science and spirituality, and they should be
together forever. In fact, only when we successfully continue to improve our level of consciousness
and match the level of science and technology, human beings have a future. The future of humanity is
very unpredictable, science may change the world as they see fits such as no disease, no hunger or no
pain. Science can explain many problems, from the taste of the food to love, because love is the
product of science! Nowadays for the environment, sea level rises every year and many countries
started land reclamation to fix the problem such as Japan or Netherland. To face these problems, the
architect has made a lot of conceptual idea to accommodate future human life. Since then, conceptual
floating foundation design has been under development to adapt the environmental issue. It uses the
principle of buoyancy to support the design and the principle itself is discovered by the scientist,
which architect adapted this principle to the design.

Where The Red Fern Grows Analysis
What does a ten year old have to look forward to in the fifth grade? Honestly, nothing much. Learning
to drive and getting to stay out late does not become a way of life for, at least, another six years. In the
days of learning about reciprocals and chloroplast I found myself looking forward to the thirty minutes
of story time after recess the most. At that age, it was the sole activity that could hold my attention for
any given time. Excited and attentive, we would all gather around Ms. Powell s old, wooden rocker

Examples Of Bird Symbolism In Macbeth
Samantha Xing pd 1
Ms Dwyer
Bird, Bird, Bird, Bird is the Word
Birds such as pigeons may be insignificant to New Yorkers, but other species are symbolic in cultures
elsewhere. They are often used in literature metaphorically to represent someone or something. A
prominent example of bird symbolism is in the famous play, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare where
Juliet is associated with the dove to represent her purity and innocence. Shakespeare also utilizes bird
symbolism in another play, Macbeth, to emphasize how Macbeth changes throughout the play and to
foreshadow Duncan s death.

Lady Macbeth foreshadows the death of Duncan by saying, The raven himself is hoarse / That croaks
the fatal entrance of Duncan / Under my battlements (1.5.45 47). Here, Lady Macbeth compares the
messenger to a raven , saying that his voice is hoarse . In some cultures, the raven is believed to smell
death before the occurrence of death. In deeper context, Lady Macbeth is saying that the voice of the
raven is hoarse as a result of mimicking the same words over and over again that imply Duncan s
death. Because the raven has the ability to smell death, a conclusion can be made that Duncan s death
is inevitable. Another example of foreshadowing through the use of birds is in the conversation
between Ross and an old man. The old man says, On Tuesday last / A falcon, towering in her pride of
place, / Was by a mousing owl hawk d at and kill d (2.4.14 16). This means that last Tuesday, a falcon
was flying around a place where she thought was safe but an unexpected owl killed her. The falcon
represents Duncan who sees Macbeth as his loyal subject and makes an assumption that Macbeth s
home is safe. However, Macbeth, represented by the owl, murders him and takes away his power and
throne, or metaphorically, the falcon s pride of place

Hybrid Energy Systems ( Hres )
Hybrid Energy system (HRES) combines two or more renewable energy sources used together to
provide increased system efficiency as well as greater balance in energy supply. It becomes popular to
remote area for power generation due to advances in renewable energy technologies and subsequent
rise in prices of petroleum products. Hybrid energy system is an excellent solution for electrification
of remote rural areas where the grid extension is difficult and not economical. [29] Such system

wind energy, micro hydro and may be conventional generators for backup. Hybrid energy system has
found much wider dimension than individual stand alone renewable/conventional systems for rural

remote area electrification will offer a quick, economic and reliable answer to the rural household s
need for power, especially, for those of light duty appliances. However, the planning of rural remote
area electrification is not always easy and a proper mix can be arrived at only after a careful technical,
economic, and socio economic study of the region involved. In order to evaluate techno economics of
any hybrid energy system configuration, it is necessary to develop a proper model for optimization

Dr. Gonzales And The Supervision Of Raymond Gonzales
Introduction:
I currently work for the company Jimmy John s under the supervision of Raymond Gonzales. When
given this assignment, I spoke to Mr. Gonzales to see if he had any personal inquiries about the day to

Price and Gas Station

Before going into the meeting with Texoil, I had assessed my BATNA as mentioned by Fisher, Ury,

attractive propositions, I was becoming open to the possibility of not selling the station at all and
continuing to run it it became a definite element of my BATNA, although it would mean that my
husband and I would be abandoning our dream plans. BP had already offered $400K for the station

and leave for my trip this was also part of my BATNA. Of course, my best outcome could be from my

understanding of the value proposition involved and built some trust. Based on other changes that
Texoil would be expected to make to the operations, such as adding a mini mart and a 3rd operating
shift, I asked for a reasonable price of $590K.
The Texoil representative rejected our initial selling price and claimed that he was not authorized to
spend this much money. It is likely that this was simply a means to negotiate down with us. He made
an offer of $500K for the station, significantly under cutting our suggested price. My spouse and I did
our best to get the representative to improve his offer but were not able to do so. We re iterated over
the reasons/justifications for pricing the station as we had done, even presenting scenarios to show the
undeniable profitability of the enterprise. Although the representative did not move on price, we were
able to extract a concession in terms of employment for both of us at a fairly attractive annual salary.
In the end the Texoil representative met our reservation point and we were able to conclude with a
deal that was favorable to both sides.
In this negotiation, I could see that we covered all the three elements of negotiation moving from
Information phase to Competitive phase and ultimately arriving at the Cooperative phase.

Yes, it s only Reservation Blues but I like it: On the Connection between Christian and Native

One of the most interesting aspects of the anthropological study of Catherine A. Lutz, entitled
Unnatural Emotions, is that the author applies the same sort of intense self examination to her own
project as an anthropologist amongst the Ifaluk as she does to the Ifaluk themselves. Every individual
at some point in his or her own life has been confronted with the surprise, after all, that someone

But beyond this initial emotional connection, the reader s sense of strangeness and estrangement of the
community is again reborn by the tone of the narrative and the detailed though magical realist
evocation of Native, Western reservation life. The seamless blend of Native American folklore and
Catholicism is one of the oddest aspects of the novel to someone personally uninitiated and unfamiliar
with Native religions, except on a superficial level. For instance, one of the novel s backup vocalists
Checkers Warm Water develops a relationship with the reservation priest. It is difficult, once one
accepts the level of oppression experienced by these Native American individuals, to fully understand
why Christianity, the religion of Caucasians, would have any draw at all. Why doesn t Checkers
simply love her own Native religion and her own Native people through the context of that tradition?
Why a priest?
The only answer is perhaps found in the idea that many of the Indian characters seek, through rock
and roll and through Catholicism as well, the sort of individualistic _expression

migration movements are frequently Southeast Asians going to North East Asian countries for the
reason that countries belonging in North East Asia are the more developed and wealthy. Asian women
are commonly involved in such marriage. Marriages with East Asian countries are sometimes fueled
by social anxiety. Intermarriages in East Asia are products of farmers or lower class men suffering
from inadequate amount of marriageable women in their areas. It is said in the book that there are
instances wherein mail order brides introduce their sisters, friends, or nieces to marry men who they

women to consider since it was an easy way to go abroad and to work considering the fact that there
were limited ways to move out of the country. This study is helpful to the researcher in explaining and

calmness with the quiet dog and control with the restrained woman. There is a juvenile tendency to her
response. One can question whether her stance is a representation of the early response of women who
had recently been given the right to vote. The women have won, but as of yet they are not confident to
retaliate to men s verbal violence against their achievement. Could this be the indifference Virginia
Woolf refers to in her essay about women and nationalism? Are we to conclude that the man is
compelled to fight? He is after all displaying his sex characteristic which she does not share and
because he does not share her maternal instinct he is oblivious to the crying of the child at his feet and

Reflection On Assisted Living
I attended Tabitha Square Gardens for my service learning. Tabitha Square Gardens is an assisted
living facility in Crete. Assisted living is a philosophy of service that focuses on maximizing each
resident s independence and dignity. This emphasizes flexibility, individualized supportive services
and health care. Involvement of the community, as well as the residents family, neighbors and friends
is encouraged. The availability of staff to meet scheduled and unexpected care needs is a major aspect
of assisted living caregiving. Assisted living serves a broad range of elderly (70 to 90+ years of age)
becoming, in effect, a bridge between active retirement living and, for some, care in a nursing facility.
Here I met Lillian and Jacky, both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first couple days I was pretty upset about the whole thing. First day that I went to Tabitha it was
very upsetting to not see anyone in the common ground socializing with others. Also, it was upsetting
seeing how some of the nurses in Tabitha treated some of the patients. For example, one guy, wouldn t
even acknowledge that one elderly lady was trying to ask him a question. When he did acknowledge
her he didn t even answer the question and walked away.

Professionalism Definition Essay
Being a professional individual is something that most people strive to be,
however, the word professional can be interpreted many different ways depending
on ones job, position or certification. The Webster dictionary defines
professionalism as the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a
profession or a professional person. Google defines professionalism as the
practicing of an activity, especially a sport, by a professional rather than amateur
players. In Public Relations, professionalism is a huge part in how we do business.
If an individual acts unprofessionally by, for example being late or coming
unprepared for an important client meeting, you, your professionalism and your
company then suffers credibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When this happens it is hard for students to juggle professionalism as
well as setting aside time for school work with their personal lives, this is why it is
important to be in a program you enjoy and can dedicate a portion of your time to;
otherwise like the quote states, your quality work and motivation suffers.
In conclusion, even though professionalism has more than one definition, they all
have one thing in common and that similarity is clearly stated as someone who has
passion and commitment for what they do. There are many different ways to
improve a persons professionalism, some more obvious than others, like attending
class and handing assignments in on time. What I have learned is that even though I
don t agree with the definition of professionalism and how it is applied to college
students, I still owe my professors, other faculty and fellow students, who do enjoy
the program they are in, the respect and professionalism that they have shown

Dihydroxyphenol Scavenger
SYNTHESIS OF HYDROXYTYROSOL USING CATECHOL PRECURSOR
LITERATURE REVIEW
INTRODUCTION
Polyphenols comprise a large family of compounds that have multiple structural unites of phenol.
These compounds are found in vegetables and fruits, wine, tea, extra virgin olive oil and cocoa, and
exhibit strong antioxidant activity by scavenging different families of Reactive Oxygen Species
(ROS)1. The main phenolic compounds identified in olive oils include hydroxytyrosol (HT), tyrosol
(TY), secoiridioxide and ligands3, 4.
Hydroxytyrosol, 2 (3,4 dihydroxyphenoyl) ethanol, a simple phenol found predominantly in olive tree
(Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenol family1,2, because of its
marked antioxidant activity, its capacity to impede low density (LDL) oxidation, platelet aggregation
and endothelial cell activation and it protection against DNA damage3,4,5. Hydroxytyrosol has been
proven to be a potent scavenger of superoxide anion and hydroxy radical6,7,8, and owing to its
antioxidant and radical scavenging properties, Hydroxytyrosol has a wide range of biological effects.
Hydroxytyrosol (Figure 1) exerts its antioxidant activity by transforming itself into a catechol quinone
and it is more active than antioxidant vitamins and synthetic antioxidants10. HT is a metabolite of
oleuropein, another major phenolic compound of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pre treatment of HepG2 cells with hydroxytyrosol averted cell damage, this could be due to the fact
that hydroxytyrosol may set up the antioxidant defense system of the cell to withstand oxidative stress

level in breast epithelial MCF10A cells. Thus hydroxytyrosol could prevent oxidative stress in non
cancer breast cells, thereby averting initiation of chain reactions that transform non cancer cells into

Polio Is An Infectious Disease Essay
Polio is an infectious disease. This condition is caused by a virus, most often the poliovirus. This
condition spreads easily from person to person (contagious). The virus can spread by:
Eating food or drinking water contaminated with the virus found in human waste.
Contact with infected mucus or sputum from the nose or mouth.
Contact with infected air droplets from a cough or sneeze.
There are three types of polio:
Abortive polio.
Nonparalytic polio.
Paralytic polio.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF POLIO?
It takes 5 35 days for symptoms to develop symptoms once you have the virus. Symptoms depend on
the type of polio you have. Most people who have abortive polio either do not develop symptoms or
have only mild symptoms. These often last 72 hours or less. They include:
General discomfort or uneasiness (malaise).
Headache.
Red or sore throat.
Slight fever.
Vomiting.
Rarely, a person will get nonparalytic or paralytic polio. Symptoms of these forms of polio include:
A sudden (acute) paralysis of any extremity or all extremities (quadriplegia).
Respiratory failure.
WHAT ARE THE VACCINATION SUGGESTIONS FOR TRAVELERS?
A set of age appropriate polio vaccines should be completed before traveling to:
Countries with active polio disease.
A region with a polio outbreak.

The Four Gospels Of Matthew, Mark, And Luke
The canon brought the four gospels about, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (Evangelists) . These four
gospels paint a different picture of Christ and were written for different audiences. Matthew, Mark and
Luke are said to be very similar to each other. But, there is things which are common to Matthew and
Luke that aren t seen in Mark. Matthew and Luke used another source which Mark didn t know about,
the Q source. John s gospel is quite different to the other three. He is shown as someone who is very
close to Jesus and a very reliable eyewitness (John 19:35).
Matthew s gospel was written in 85 AD for the Jewish Christians who were living in Antioch, Syria.
The audience of Matthew s gospel had tension between the Gentiles, Jews and Jewish Christians. The
main theme relates to how Jesus is portrayed as a teacher due to the gospel having five sermons (5 7).
His gospel contains lots of parables and miracles which would aid him in his teachings. The good
news for the original audience in 1st century Palestine (the gospel) meant that their Messiah that they
believed in had come and they were all thrilled about it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

keeping James safe while he does what he does what he does best, disarming bombs that could kill
him in an instant.
During one E.O.D. mission, James decides to search for the insurgents responsible for detonating a

an innocent Iraqi civilian. The bomb detonates, killing the civilian and the stress of this mission causes
Sanborn to break down and confess to James that he wants to go home and start a family. He can no

If this is you, most likely your information technology team will tell you they have browser specific

Beethoven Music in the Clockwork Orange

8/1/05
Music History: Beethoven
An Interpretation of Beethoven s Music in the Film A Clockwork Orange A Clockwork Orange is the
story of a young and disturbed man who, in order to avoid his prison sentence, subjects himself to a
controversial new treatment to correct his unlawful behavior. Stanley Kubrick, the film s creator, uses
Beethoven s music to penetrate the complexity of the main character s actions and emotions.
Beethoven s music acts as his salvation, providing him with pleasure and relief from the violent
lifestyle he created, but in the end it becomes the force that tears him apart. The main character, Alex,
and his gang of four, Dim, George, and Pete, spend their nights drinking psychedelic milk ... Show

The treatment conditioned Alex to become physically sick when hearing Beethoven s music since it
was present during the entire procedure. As the music continues to torture him, the symphony brings
Alex to his lowest point nearing death as he jumps out of the window in an attempt to escape the
music and his agony. As a criminal, Beethoven s music provided him with sensation and fascination,
but as A Clockwork Orange, it is now his breaking force. A Clockwork orange refers to a mechanical
piece of fruit. Alex is now unable to make his own decisions, he appears normal on the outside, but is
really mechanical and machine like inside. During the Ludovic treatment, Alex watches extremely
violent films. During the first few days he has no problems watching the films, even somewhat
enjoying them. As the days continue he realizes that the accompanying music is Beethoven s ninth
symphony, fourth movement. He tells the doctors that it is a crime to use Beethoven s music for such
hatred, but he is told it s for his own good. The combination of the violence and the music deeply
tortures and changes Alex. The doctors are directly ignoring the intent and greatness of the music. The
symphony is a celebration of life yet the doctors have paired the music with videos of some of the
most terrible events in history, with the peak of the piece accompanied by footage of Nazi s. The
music further elevates the tragedy and scale of these

Intelligence Sharing And The Capabilities Of The Homeland...
Intelligence Sharing and the Capability of the Homeland Security Enterprise What are the capabilities
and limitations of intelligence in supporting homeland security efforts? Since the deadly terror attacks
of 9/11, intelligence gathering for homeland security has improved immensely. One of the most
important developments in our law enforcement structure that has enhanced our intelligence is the
creation of fusion centers. Fusion centers are state and major urban area focal points for the receipt,
analysis, gathering, and sharing of threat related information between federal; state, local, tribal,
territorial (SLTT); and private sector partners (Department of Homeland Security, 2016). These fusion
centers are owned and operated by state and local entities and are supported by federal partners in its
many aspects which include personnel deployment, capacity building, and important and crucial
connectivity to federal systems (Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), 2012, para. 3). For example, the
DHS provides over 70 fusion centers access to the Homeland Secure Data Network or HSDN which
allows these fusion centers to receive federally generated classified threat information. By creating
fusion centers, intelligence gathering and analysis is not contained in the federal level governments
from the SLTT level as well as other entities relevant to this initiatives are involved. This then
devolves and shares homeland security roles to practically all law enforcers from all levels

The V-Chip Essay
The V Chip
What is a V chip? This term has become a buzz word for any discussion evolving telecommunications
regulation and television ratings, but not too many reports define the new technology in its fullest
form. A basic definition of the V chip; is a microprocessor that can decipher information sent in the
vertical blanking of the NTSC signal, purposefully for the control of violent or controversial subject
matter. Yet, the span of the new chip is much greater than any working definition can encompass. A
discussion of the V chip must include a consideration of the technical and ethical issues, in addition to
examining the constitutionally of any law that might concern standards set by the US government. Yet

The NTSC signal includes extra information space known as the subcarrier and Vertical blanking
interval. As explained in the quotation from Mr. Marquis, the V chips will use a certain section of this
space to send simple rating numbers and points that will be compared to the personality settings in the
chip. Many new technologies are being developed for smart TV or data broadcast on this part of the
NTSC signal. Basically the V chip will severely limit the bandwidth for high performance
transmission of data on the
NTSC signal. There is also to be cost to this new technology, which will be passed to consumers.
Estimates are that each chip will cost six dollars wholesale and must be designed into the television s
logic. The V chip could easily push the price of televisions up by twenty five or more dollars during
the first years of production. The much simpler solution of set top boxes allows control for those who
need it and allow those consumers who don t to save money and use new data technology. Another
cost will most definitely be levied to television advertisers for the upgrade of the transmitting
equipment. Weather the V chip encoding signal is added upstream of the transmitter or directly into
uplink units and other equipment intended for broadcast; this cost will have to compensated for in
advertising sales and prices. The V chip regulation may also require another staff employee at most
stations to effectively rate locally

Australian Government Policy Essay
Australian Government Policy
The first English settlement in Australia was established in 1788. Before this the Aborigines lived in
the land in harmony. However, after the English arrived, the two different cultures were in close
contact and had to determine how to coexist. White Europeans did not respect the Aborigines right to
the land and it s resources. With brutal force, they took control of the land and claimed it as their own.
Australians then developed their own policies on how to deal with the Aborigines, which, as you can
expect, bettered their own way of life. There are three historical phases of Australian governmental
policies: dispossession, segregation, and assimilation. There are also some recent policies that have ...

Aborigines
There were no Aborigines when the Europeans first landed in Australia. There were approximately
600 different groups of indigenous people that had the same technology and social system, yet differed
by their geographical location, linguistic system, kin, and a variety of other factors. These peoples are
classified into one generalized group as a result of their shared historical experience of treatment by
Europeans (Reece, 1999).
The Aborigines have a long standing presence in Australia. Research has determined that they
occupied the land approximately 70,000 to 175,000 years before the British colonization. It is
estimated that in the 1770 s, there were from 500,000 to one million Aboriginal people living in
Australia. Presently, there are 300,000 Aborigines living in there (Fletcher, 1999). Most of the original
populations were nearly destroyed within one to two generations of British colonialism. This
reduction in numbers is due to the history of new disease, poor access to health care, malnutrition,
violence, and social dislocation (Markus, 1994).
Government Policies
Aborigines and Europeans have been in coexistence since the first British arrival. The new Australians
developed policies that set the rules on what to do with the Aborigines and how they were to be
treated. Over time, these governmental policies have changed as Australian attitudes, values, and
desires have

Parenthood And Its Effects On The United States
Planned Parenthood There is an ongoing argument about the funding of Planned Parenthood in the
United States. There are many reasons that some people do not want to fund it. One of those reasons is
because Planned Parenthood offers abortions to women. There are people who believe that these
operations should be shut down to rid our country of abortions. However, Planned Parenthood offers
much more than just abortions in their clinics. Planned Parenthood should be funded because of the
examinations and resources they provide, the education they give, and because it is a low income
health center.
Planned Parenthood offers access to many important health examinations, procedures, treatments and
medications. They offer breast cancer and cervical cancer exams. They test for STI s, HPV and UTI s
to name a few. All of these tests and exams are preventative actions to not only see if someone has a
health issue, but also to prevent health issues. They provide birth control to women who are not ready
to have children. They also offer abortions. However, Planned Parenthood has decreased the number
of abortions per year overall, including Vermont where Title X was passed to fund operations such as
Planned Parenthood. This is because Planned Parenthood offers birth control therefore preventing
unwanted pregnancies which may have ended in abortion (Zoppo 497). It is also important to note that
Federal funding of Planned Parenthood does not fund abortions except for cases of rape,

  • 2. Paul In Tangerine SWOOSH! That was the sound of someone s foot kicking a soccer ball, or was it a football? Either way the only important SWOOSH sound is the one that is heard on the sports fields that Erik Fisher plays. Why you ask? Because in Tangerine by Edward Bloor Paul Fisher will learn that even those visually impaired can see when someone is cruel. Author Edward Bloor lived in Trenton, New Jersey before attending Fordham University in New York, and now resides in Florida. He has penned books titled Crusaders, Storytime, and Soccer, Tangerine, and Me which are all fiction novels. He was nominated for Young Readers Award. There are many moments of character development for Paul in the novel Tangerine. Paul grows physically and mentally throughout ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The soccer field is important to Paul because playing soccer is his passion and the soccer field is where he finds his almost only confidence. When Paul is on the soccer field, he doesn t care about Erik or his parents, or anything else going on in his life. It s just him, his teammates, and the sport. For example, War Eagles! War Eagles! We started moving our hands in unison, up and down, changing the chant into the frenzied cry of War! War! War! This evidence shows how Paul was just happily shouting along with his teammates, not focusing on anything or anybody else. People who enjoy realistic fiction novels that include sibling rivalry, sports, making life changes, and the tension of a dysfunctional family environment will be interested in reading this journal writing from the first person perspective of Paul Fisher. This novel includes characteristics of middle school encounters ; therefor, ages 10 and up will appreciate this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The development of computer graphics has made computers easier to interact with, and better for understanding and interpreting many types of data. Developments in computer graphics have had a profound impact on many types of media and have revolutionized animation, movies and the video game industry. Overview The term computer graphics has been used in a broad sense to describe almost everything on computers that is not text or sound . Another example is that Sutherland s software modeled objects not just a picture of objects. In other words, with a model of a car, one could change the size of the tires without affecting the rest of the car. It could stretch the body of the car without deforming the tires. These early computer graphics were vector graphics, composed of thin lines whereas modern day graphics are Raster based using pixels. Further 1960s developments Also in 1961 another student at MIT, Steve Russell, created the first video game, Spacewar. Written for the DEC PDP 1, Spacewar was an instant success and copies started flowing to other PDP 1 owners and eventually even DEC got a copy. The engineers at DEC used it as a diagnostic program on every new PDP 1 before shipping it. The sales force picked up on this quickly enough and when installing new units, would run the world s first video game for their new customers. E. E. Zajac, a scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratory (BTL), created a film called Simulation of a two giro gravity attitude control system in 1963.[5] In this computer generated film, Zajac showed how the attitude of a satellite could be altered as it orbits the Earth. He created the animation on an IBM 7090 mainframe computer. Also at BTL, Ken Knowlton, Frank Sindon and Michael Noll started working in the computer graphics field. • 4. A Comparison Of Shrek And Siddhartha Siddhartha and Shrek contain similarities as mono myths; however the story of Shrek is the more creative work of the two. Both stories are good examples of mono myths, but the appeal of each story is very different. The audience reading Siddhartha and the audience watching Shrek are most likely polar opposites. Siddhartha s audience is probably more adults and religiously based. Shrek s audience is probably more children and family friendly. Siddhartha is a spiritual and religious novel that is intended to teach the reader about how Enlightenment may be achieved. The story line follows Siddhartha through his journey to find Enlightenment for himself. Siddhartha is the son of a wealthy Brahmin. • 5. My research paper is entitled, Analyzing Heart of Darkness... My research paper is entitled, Analyzing Heart of Darkness through a Feminist Lens. Through this paper, I will investigate and examine Heart of Darkness by means of Feminist Criticism and literary theory. I aspire to thoroughly analyze the entire narrative, in order to pull out and pinpoint various aspects and examples linked to feminist theory. I want to investigate and spotlight specific occurrences, in the novel, where characteristics of Feminist Criticism can be found or applied. I specifically want to look at the tree women characters introduced in the text; The Intended The Mistress and Marlow s aunt. I also want to prove that Heart of Darkness is a text that openly conflicts with the basis of feminism. To begin this paper, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Joseph Conrad s novel Heart of Darkness, Marlow s mindset towards women represents the rather widespread viewpoint of the 19th century. Men during this time viewed women as insignificant and inferior. Perhaps that is why there are only three female characters in Heart of Darkness: Kurtz s mistress, Kurtz s Intended, and Marlow s aunt. Marlow references these women with the intention of giving the narrative more gist. Though they certainly perform particular functions in the story, these women don t really correlate with the main premise of the tale. The main theme of the story centers on how Marlow s voyage into the Congo leads him to self discovery. The journey helps to mold and shape his beliefs in humanity and causes him to question morality. At the outset of Marlow s narrative he expresses how he, Charlie Marlow, set the women to work to get a job. Marlow communicates this in the perspective that he was so determined to adventure into the trade commerce that he did what was unconceivable in the time period: he asked a woman for money. The lady, his aunt, seems to surpass the customary role of women during the time period. She tells Marlow that she is overjoyed to aid him in his endeavors. She even instructs him to ask her for help whenever he desires it. This occurrence does not play too much of a role in the overall premise of the tale; it merely functions to tell the reader how Marlow succeeds in getting the finances he needs to ... • 7. Why I Want To Be A Physical Therapist Most people ponder what they want to do when they become an adult starting at a young age. Some are passionate and have a particular interest while others may take a different path than what they originally thought. However, no matter what career one considers, there will always be thousands to explore. School is an opportunity for young adults to discover what interests them so that they may find a career that leads to happiness. The first shadow I attended was at Cumberland Physical Therapy to learn more about the life of a physical therapist. This career interested me because I had once gone to a physical therapist with my Dad when he tore his ACL and was intrigued by how active and exciting the career appeared. From the virtual shadow I learned that navigational skills and a third mate s deck license was required to sail unlimited tonnage vessels as a shipmate. Shipmates must also have knowledge in the area of public safety and security since they are responsible for not only themselves, but the other people aboard their ship. Some of the basic responsibilities that a shipmate has is to be able to steer and navigate vessels using compasses or lighthouses. I find it very fascinating that one man could end the Apartheid and that is why I want to find out more about this. South Africa is a country with a past of enforced racism and separation of its multi racial community. The White Europeans invaded South Africa and started a political system known as Apartheid (meaning apartness ). This system severely restricted the rights and lifestyle of the non White inhabitants of the country forcing them to live separately from the White Europeans. (History, 2013) The population of South Africa were segregated into categouries of Coloured, Black, White and Indian. Black South African lives were affected in many different ways and it still is today. Apartheid meant great hardship, it meant that Black people were unable to live a reasonable life. All natural civil rights were taken away from them. Public beaches, drive in cinema parking spaces, graveyards, parks and public toilets are just a few things that were racially segregated. You can say that the church was on of few places races could mix without breaking the law. (Wikipedia, 2013) Black South Africans were segregated in education and there were even different laws. For example if a Black African committed a crime, this person could expect years in prison. But if it was a White African, the consequence would probably only be getting charged. Black Africans were treated inhumanely and considered to be filth.(NelsonMandelas, 2013) The purpose of their education was to train them to be Black labourers or servants as it was considered all they were good for. In addition, whole communities were transported by the police to new areas far away from their old homes, which were often bulldozed to the ground. Confusion and Personal Identity in Rip Van Winkle Essay Rip Van Winkle tells the story of a man who, on a trek into the Kaatskill mountains, mysteriously sleeps away twenty years of his life during the Revolutionary War. When he returns home, he finds that things have dramatically changed; King George no longer has control over the colonies, and many of his friends have either died or left town. At this point, the story reaches its climax, where Van Winkle realizes that his life may be forever changed. To this point, Rip Van Winkle has had only to deal with the change in his surroundings. Rip Van Winkle notices these traits, and he is ...now completely confounded. His confusion has increased, but confounded also refers to shame the shame he might feel about his past. As the confusion increases, Rip begins to question his identity. When the man with the cocked hat asks who Rip was and what was his name, we are more concerned with Rip s identity as a human being than the answers to these simplistic questions, and so is Rip, for these questions become of greater importance when we consider how they concern Rip s inner self. He responds that ...I am not myself, and he enters a near panic as he describes his sad plight. His thoughts become shorter. The words used are shorter. Birth control and contraceptive pills, however, are common aspects of family planning. These have been helpful for not only families but also national governments in their bid to control population growth. To achieve this, however, down history, there have been numerous efforts by quite remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to fight for women rights and birth control. Among such personalities is Margaret Sanger who is widely regarded as the mother of contraceptives and birth control (Watson). It is through the efforts of this fearless woman in collaboration with other like minded individuals that contraceptive pills came to be and their subsequent legalization. As evidenced by her numerous campaigns based on feminism and women rights, she fought a hard battle in the process of legalizing birth control. This study paper investigates and establishes various aspects of her life and the subsequent achievements of her efforts. Historical Perspective Sanger was born on September 14, 1879, in Corning New York. She was an atheist in terms of religion. In addition, she was White, had a straight sexual orientation and was a Republican in terms of party affiliation. • 11. Theories Of Synergy Theory One of the theories used to explain why firms engage in M A is the synergy theory. Synergy theory or hypothesis asserts that the sum value of both individual firms before an M A is lower than that of the combined firm (Seth, 1990). This increase in value is due to the effect of the synergy potentials which could only be realized by combining operational and financial resources of both firms. These synergies present the extra value created by merger. Thus, creating value for shareholders that at least equates or exceeds the cost of the acquisition should be the primary objective of any M A. Essentially, synergies should be the sole principle in justifying companies to engage in M A. In theory, financial synergy of a merger is realized when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No private assumption on the value of a company is given. Oftentimes, this is not the case. The Harris poll published in 1984 suggest otherwise. According to the Harris poll, only 32 percent of the surveyed executives thought that the stock market correctly value their companies price, while 60 percent disagreed and felt that their companies are undervalued (Harris poll, 20 February 1984). This private assumption of fair price could easily find its way onto the M A negotiation table. Therefore, another theory the valuation theory is also used to analyze how M A could create value for the shareholders. The valuation theory states that the managers of the acquiring firm may possess more knowledge of the target firm than what actually is being valued through the price of stock in the market (Trautwein, 1990). The knowledge, termed asymmetric information by Ravenscraft and Scherer (1987), could include an undervaluation of the target firm, or an unbeknownst advantage in the event the two firms are combined. While the later statement is more or less in alignment with the synergy theory, the mentioned synergy here has not been fully evaluated by the market. The former suggests that a discrepancy between market value and private assumption on the price of a target due to undisclosed asymmetric information. Both can put the price of acquisition at market value but well below its true value. Valuation theory suggested that once the target firm become acquired part of the acquiring firm and the asymmetric information is fully disclosed, the shareholders would experience an immediate wealth effect due to revaluation of the market based on the newly available ... • 12. Social Media And Social Mess Essay Social Media or Social Mess According to Pew Research, 95% of teens are Internet users with an astonishing 85% using Social Media. Social Media is defined as websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Social media is a huge platform for cultural revolutions and controversies. There is a large amount of potential issues with this revolution including the possibility of cyberbullying as well as the depression that can be developed by only seeing the best part of everyone s daily life. This creates a false image that everyone has a perfect life that users believe is impossible to attain. They, in turn, view their life as dull or not as exciting as others simply because they cannot go on their summer break to swim with dolphins or skydive, because they are not committing to a college on a full ride for Football, because they don t have that seemingly perfect relationship with their parents or siblings. On the other side of the spectrum, Social Media can be used for many great causes such as activism, it can be used to stay in touch with old friends, and it can be used to encourage others or bring to light issues that no one would have heard about it they were not Facebook friends with Joe Schmo. Social Media is a trade off that western culture, and increasingly the world, must learn to deal with or restrict. Through an omniscient point of view, Porter is able to convey Granny Weatherall as a strong, independent woman who has faced hardships throughout her life. The narrator presents Weatherall s thoughts and feelings in a way that sounds similar to a first person point of view. Therefore, the reader is able to empathize with her. Granny Weatherall s memories symbolize the major turning points in her life that have shaped her into an independent woman. Porter effectively delivers themes of abandonment and denial with the use of stream of consciousness, biblical allusions, and religious symbolisms. Porter s use of stream of consciousness gives insight to Granny Weatheralls thoughts and feelings as she is approaching her death. In one paragraph, there is a dialogue between Granny Weatherall and her daughter, Cornelia, and in the next paragraph there is a transition to one of her memories. This shift is evident when the narrator states, Ah, I ll never be young again but I d be happy if they d let me lie in peace and get rested...She had to go a long way back through a great many rooms to find Hapsy standing with a baby on her arm. • 19. Critical Analysis Of Kate Chopin s The Awakening The Awakening Critical Essay The novel The Awakening by Kate Chopin contains content that is highly debatable and easily controversial. In the essay Chopin s The Awakening by Roger Platizky, the author interpreted from the novel that the depression of Edna Pontellier, the main feminine lead, is created not only from the male oppression of the time period, but is also derived from the idea that Edna is affected by a previous encounter with sexual violence, either as a witness or a victim. While there is some way to infer that this is true, it is not confirmed and is quite a reach, considering her life now and willingness with men. The reason that some readers believe this is due to her mood changes, boundary problems and suicide (Platizky, Roger). If Edna was a victim or witness to sexual violence, she would be even more submissive and fragile as a character. This theory is untrue, however, because throughout the novel Edna Pontellier displays a growing strength that is presented to the men in her life and finally gains her the independence she has been desiring, even if it isn t in the most predictable way. In the essay, Chopin s The Awakening, Platizky writes that while one could argue she was just shy or introverted, Edna s sweeping passions later in the novel suggest the introversion may have been imposed. (Platizky, Roger). While this is true that Edna has sweeping passions later in the novel, it is not correlated to Edna wanting to block something from her memory, such as sexual violence. While someone could insist that Edna s mood swings are suggesting the protagonist is trying to block something more than just her realization that she is unhappy in her present marriage (Platizky), that information is extremely faulty. Instead, Edna s mood swings deal with the oppression of the patriarchal society that women were thrown into during this time period. Each woman was supposed to lack individuality and obey the men, especially in the Creole Catholic society. Edna s lack of cooperation towards this norm shows up often in The Awakening. She could not at that moment have done other than denied and resisted. She wondered if her husband had ever spoken to her like that before, and is she has submitted ... They were called the beat generation. The beat generation was particularly remarkable because although it was began by an exceptionally small group of people, its cultural influence was enormous. Based on other changes that Texoil would be expected to make to the operations, such as adding a mini mart and a 3rd operating shift, I asked for a reasonable price of $590K. The Texoil representative rejected our initial selling price and claimed that he was not authorized to spend this much money. It is likely that this was simply a means to negotiate down with us. He made an offer of $500K for the station, significantly under cutting our suggested price. My spouse and I did our best to get the representative to improve his offer but were not able to do so. We re iterated over the reasons/justifications for pricing the station as we had done, even presenting scenarios to show the undeniable profitability of the enterprise. Although the representative did not move on price, we were able to extract a concession in terms of employment for both of us at a fairly attractive annual salary. In the end the Texoil representative met our reservation point and we were able to conclude with a deal that was favorable to both sides. Lutz Yes, it s only Reservation Blues but I like it: On the Connection between Christian and Native Religions One of the most interesting aspects of the anthropological study of Catherine A. Lutz, entitled Unnatural Emotions, is that the author applies the same sort of intense self examination to her own project as an anthropologist amongst the Ifaluk as she does to the Ifaluk themselves. Every individual at some point in his or her own life has been confronted with the surprise, after all, that someone seems exactly like me. But beyond this initial emotional connection, the reader s sense of strangeness and estrangement of the community is again reborn by the tone of the narrative and the detailed though magical realist evocation of Native, Western reservation life. The seamless blend of Native American folklore and Catholicism is one of the oddest aspects of the novel to someone personally uninitiated and unfamiliar with Native religions, except on a superficial level. For instance, one of the novel s backup vocalists Checkers Warm Water develops a relationship with the reservation priest. It is difficult, once one accepts the level of oppression experienced by these Native American individuals, to fully understand why Christianity, the religion of Caucasians, would have any draw at all. Why doesn t Checkers simply love her own Native religion and her own Native people through the context of that tradition? Why a priest? The only answer is perhaps found in the idea that many of the Indian characters seek, through rock and roll and through Catholicism as well, the sort of individualistic _expression ... There is also to be cost to this new technology, which will be passed to consumers. Estimates are that each chip will cost six dollars wholesale and must be designed into the television s logic. The V chip could easily push the price of televisions up by twenty five or more dollars during the first years of production. The much simpler solution of set top boxes allows control for those who need it and allow those consumers who don t to save money and use new data technology. Another cost will most definitely be levied to television advertisers for the upgrade of the transmitting equipment. Weather the V chip encoding signal is added upstream of the transmitter or directly into uplink units and other equipment intended for broadcast; this cost will have to compensated for in advertising sales and prices. The V chip regulation may also require another staff employee at most stations to effectively rate locally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 52. Australian Government Policy Essay Australian Government Policy The first English settlement in Australia was established in 1788. Before this the Aborigines lived in the land in harmony. However, after the English arrived, the two different cultures were in close contact and had to determine how to coexist. White Europeans did not respect the Aborigines right to the land and it s resources. With brutal force, they took control of the land and claimed it as their own. Australians then developed their own policies on how to deal with the Aborigines, which, as you can expect, bettered their own way of life. There are three historical phases of Australian governmental policies: dispossession, segregation, and assimilation. There are also some recent policies that have ... There were approximately 600 different groups of indigenous people that had the same technology and social system, yet differed by their geographical location, linguistic system, kin, and a variety of other factors. These peoples are classified into one generalized group as a result of their shared historical experience of treatment by Europeans (Reece, 1999). The Aborigines have a long standing presence in Australia. Research has determined that they occupied the land approximately 70,000 to 175,000 years before the British colonization. It is estimated that in the 1770 s, there were from 500,000 to one million Aboriginal people living in Australia. Presently, there are 300,000 Aborigines living in there (Fletcher, 1999). Most of the original populations were nearly destroyed within one to two generations of British colonialism. This reduction in numbers is due to the history of new disease, poor access to health care, malnutrition, violence, and social dislocation (Markus, 1994). Government Policies Aborigines and Europeans have been in coexistence since the first British arrival. The new Australians developed policies that set the rules on what to do with the Aborigines and how they were to be treated. Over time, these governmental policies have changed as Australian attitudes, values, and desires have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Parenthood And Its Effects On The United States Planned Parenthood There is an ongoing argument about the funding of Planned Parenthood in the United States. There are many reasons that some people do not want to fund it. One of those reasons is because Planned Parenthood offers abortions to women. There are people who believe that these operations should be shut down to rid our country of abortions. However, Planned Parenthood offers much more than just abortions in their clinics. Planned Parenthood should be funded because of the examinations and resources they provide, the education they give, and because it is a low income health center. Planned Parenthood offers access to many important health examinations, procedures, treatments and medications. They offer breast cancer and cervical cancer exams. They test for STI s, HPV and UTI s to name a few. All of these tests and exams are preventative actions to not only see if someone has a health issue, but also to prevent health issues. They provide birth control to women who are not ready to have children. They also offer abortions. However, Planned Parenthood has decreased the number of abortions per year overall, including Vermont where Title X was passed to fund operations such as Planned Parenthood. This is because Planned Parenthood offers birth control therefore preventing unwanted pregnancies which may have ended in abortion (Zoppo 497). It is also important to note that Federal funding of Planned Parenthood does not fund abortions except for cases of rape, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
