to help the losing side, so he is distraught when Buck dies. Scotty goes to the local minister, who is an
educated man from the east coast, to discuss Buck s funeral. However, the two can barely understand
each other due to Buck s lack of education and his west coast slang. Twain doesn t seem to mock
either Buck or the minister but uses their miscommunication to comedic effect. At the very end of the
story Scotty converts to Christianity and begins teaching Sunday school classes. The narrator notes
that his class progresses faster than all the others, regardless of his slang. 2. How Santa Claus Came to
Simpson s Bar by Bret Harte The story starts in Sacramento on a day when it has been raining for an
extended period of time. Most of the town is at Thompson s store rather than at Simpson s Bar. There
are many named characters, the main ones being the Old Man and his son, Johnny, who is affected by
many ailments. The story is almost a wild west take on Santa Claus, as it starts on Christmas eve and
Johnny asks his father if Christmas and Santa are real. Dick Bullen, another major character, acts as
Santa as he rushes on his ugly horse, Jovita, to get presents to Johnny. However, this being a western
story, Dick is shot during his journey by Jack Simpson, the owner of the bar and has to swim up river
in order to make it back to the bar to deliver the toys. 3. The Blue Hotel by Stephen Crane This story
is about five different men in a hotel and an examination on when one should step in to prevent a
situation from taking a turn for the worst. It takes place in a blue hotel in rural Nebraska run by a man
named Scully. The other main characters are his son, Johnny, The Swede, The Easterner, and The
Cowboy. The Swede behaves in a strange manner, as if he believes that everyone is trying to kill him.
