Theories in sociology provide people with different perspectives in which we view our social
environment. One the theories that we would have to agree with is the Social Self Theory which
was theorized by George Herbert Mead, a well known sociologist. The theory focuses on the way
in which the social self is developed. Meads theory of the social self is based on the perspective
that the self emerges from social interactions, such as observing and interacting with others,
responding to others opinions about oneself, and internalizing external opinions and internal

People put a large amount of effort into appearing a certain way. Many try to look wealthier than
they seem or try to act more intelligent than they are. These pictures that people hold up in front
of themselves are disguises, and in the case of King Lear, characters use these disguises to create
illusions of power, love and as a way to protect themselves. However, not only does the appearance
of a particular person deceive, but also the eyes of the person watching them. In King Lear,
Shakespeare employs the motif of eyes and sight to emphasize how appearances deceive and cannot
be trusted.
In the first scene Regan and Goneril deceive King Lear with their words, flattering him in order
to obtain more land. By lying to Lear about their love and devotion to him, Regan and Goneril
believe that he will reward them. However, as the sisters later portray, they have no love for their
father, but are only driven by their greed. Because they lust after power, and Lear had the most
authority before he split his kingdom, they begin to strip away what little influence and control he

Before getting into the stories of survivors, one thing I found interesting in this film was the
transfers in between people talking. There were always takeaways showing animals and land all

Man On Wire Analysis
In an extremely rare occurrence, I watched Man on Wire twice in 24 hours. I enjoyed the movie,
which I watched because of Adam Kempenaar s continuous praise, but I don t love it enough to
merit that second viewing. On the contrary, the first time I watched it was at 11 p.m. and I had
been up since 4:30 that morning. So my mental faculties weren t at their peak, and I began to
doze off even though I liked the documentary. So I watched it again the next day, at a better time
and with more sleep, to help me clarify why I think this is a very good but not great film.
Man on Wire, James Marsh s 2008 documentary, chronicles the story of Philippe Petit, an eccentric
French tightrope walker who dreamed of performing on a wire between the Twin Towers.... Show
The walk is gratifying and somewhat beautiful and moving, but you don t quite know why.
Maybe it s because it s fun to see Petit, in photographs, finally realize his dream. Maybe it s the
payoff of seeing the heist accomplished. Maybe it s the poignancy of seeing someone with such
joy atop what became a symbol for tragedy and loss on 9/11. Regardless of the reason, you
certainly feel a swell of emotion when you see the images of Petit on the wire.
With all that being said, I do think a few things hold Man on Wire back from becoming a truly
great movie. One of those is that the lines between the recreations and archival footage that Marsh
uses is often blurred. That bothered me for some reason, possibly because I d like to know which
one is the truth.
I eventually thought, however, that I don t think documentaries can truly show us objective reality,
so that shouldn t matter. I also thought it didn t matter what was real footage and reconstructions
because regardless the talent displayed in these segments actually happened and is impressive.
Despite these conclusions, I still found myself pulled out of the movie when I couldn t deduce if
the images onscreen were archival footage or
