The document discusses improving primary education in India. It notes that while 4% of GDP is spent on education, statistics on primary education, especially in government schools, are unimpressive. Major problems identified include a lack of skilled and dedicated teachers, insufficient pressure or monitoring of teachers, and mismanagement of resources. Suggested solutions include increasing teacher pay and status, more rigorous teacher training, stronger school monitoring systems, and greater parental awareness and involvement.
2. Improving primary
education in India
About 4% of GDP is invested on education in India.
Inspite of this, the statistics are not impressive and say we
have a long way to go. So here is an effort to give an
insight of the problems in primary education specially in
government schools and discussing potential solutions
3.
4. So where are we going wrong??
The shocking statistics reveal that even though a
lot of policies and investment is made for
improving primary education the quality of
education is of prime concern. BUT….
5. Private sector is doing much better than
government schools even though they do not
provide incentives like mid day meal, free books
and bicycles..Why??
Private schools
• Pressure to
perform
• Have a
dedicated unit
to manage the
workforce
Govt schools
• No motivation
to work
• The workforce
is not managed
properly
6. Pondering on major problems..
Lack of skillful teachers
Lack of enthusiasm and dedication among
teachers
No enough pressure as in private schools
on teachers from higher authorities.
Mismanagement of resources from
various units of hierarchy .
7. Taking teaching to next level..
Elevating the status of teachers by
providing decent pay and social status
Making teaching profession more
competitive by making the qualifying
courses for teachers rigorous
To bring about a competitive selection
procedure for teachers.
To establish premier institutes which can
produce skilled teaching force
8. Monitoring school..
Govt schools, generally in the remote
areas are never monitored properly
A dedicated unit in hierarchy is to be
established which monitors the growth
and developments of set of schools.
Giving an additional power to village
panchayats and local bodies to regularly
inspect schools in their respective
localities.
9. Statistics stresses that a regular inspection
is to be made by higher authorities and
take strict action on irregular staff.
10. So is that all…?
The very small things like parents being
uneducated and lacking awareness can cause
failure of education system
Therefore it is very necessary that
awareness is created among parents about
education
A regular teacher-parent interaction has to
happen for greater results
A strong link has to be formed between
community and school to build a healthy
society
