Olaudah Equiano was an African man who was taken as a slave to America at age 11, where he worked for a sea merchant and slave owner until purchasing his freedom at age 19. He went on to write "The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African" to persuade others of the need for democracy, personal freedom, and that all people were capable of using their own intelligence. After gaining his freedom, he lived in London in the 1750s where he attended school with white children.
