Georgia was the 13th American colony, founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe under a charter from King George II. The first settlers landed at Yamacraw Bluffs and established the city of Savannah. Originally intended as a buffer between South Carolina and Spanish Florida, Georgia was initially established as a slave-free colony but later allowed slavery. During the American Revolution, Georgia ratified the U.S. Constitution and contributed signers to the Declaration of Independence, though Savannah was briefly captured by the British in 1778.
